The northbound Southern Pacific pas eenger train last Wednesday night had a narrow escape from being wrecked at a very rough aud dangerous point two miles south of Grants Pass. Some mis creant had placed a tie across the track, but foituuately the pilot struck the im pediment and kept it from passing un der the wheels. Robbery ia supposed to have been the motive. Rev. S. A. Douglas, formerly pastor of the Baptist Church of this city, passed through Wednesday mornii g from Oxnard, Calif., enroute to Albauy where he has accepted a call. Mrs. Douglas and two sons stopped over here fora few days visit with Mrs. O. P. Coshow. How differently we do look at things, and at the same things. Here is lr. Bryan, ready for the fray at St. Louis, and armed with a red hot statement that we are even now overshadowed by the menace of militarism and imper ialism, in addition to being burdened with the unceasing attacks of a deadly financial ocopns, while the people of Oregon have just declared their belief by 20,000 majority that Mr. Bryan is a chump. Mr. Jameison is getting quite feeble and it is quite probable that be will not recover from his ailment. Paul Mahoney is now employed at the depot in this city as "caller." Baggageman Wm. Van Leuwen has resigned and will go into the train ser vice. Mrs. Geo. Vapuel, wife of the popular dispatcher's clerk, came over from Oak land last week where she has been visit ing relatives. Binger Hermann, bv reqnot of the citizens of Eup-ne and vicinity, wrote the Secretary of Agricultural at Seattle, Wash., June 8 James AI dion and Edgar Marshall, two of tn most desperate criminals in the King ounty jail, sawed their way throuah 1 he steel bar cells durinz last night, and this morning crawled out and ran down the main corridor, with razors strapped to their wrists, and dashed through the main jail office. Deputy Sheriff Hogan irave the alarm, and pursued the crimi nals. Marshall attacked him, but was soon overpowered. Allison slashed bis way through the guards, and grabbed a prisoner named Johnson, and un-d him ts'a shield. He fought his way through 1 he corridor, where he encountered Dep uty Sheriff Bippe, who felled him wih a rock Allison revived and gained hi reedom again, and was unning out ot the front doors of the court noute, when he was captured by Deputy Sheriff Downie.
