Drain defeated the Cottage Grove ball team here election day hy a score of li lo 4. Neither side scored during the drst three innings and then the home team put on their batting clothes and started the fireworks, securing five scores during one inning. The home boys played better ball than heretofore and did not make so many of those cost ly errors. There was a gcod crowd in attendance at the game. Last Friday about noon E. R. Apple gate's residerce was discovered to be on fire and by the time a crowd had gather ed to fight it.it had made a good start and it looked as if the house was doom ed. While some were fiehtinz the flames others were carrying out the fur- j niture, bnt by hard work the flames J were extinguished. The fire started from the fine and burned off the rafters and several holes in the roof. Two carpets were rained by fire and water and some clothing was burned. Mr. Applegata estimates the loss at $150. I At tliu itlMCtiiin Itl.Tnna IQill PAn...af. I man Hermann was elected by a plural ity of 2'71. Of no use to one, t abso lute bliss to two. The small boy gets it for nothing, the young man has to steal it, and the old man has to buy it. The baby's right, the lover's privilege, the hypocrite's mast. Toayoucggirl, faith, to a married woman, hop, and to an old maid, charily. The war between Russia and Japan has absorbed so much of the public at tention that the war in Thibet has been almost overlooked. Thibet is a real hermit nation and about the only one of its kind in the world. It is contiguous to China, which country nominally controls it, and also to India. Because of Great, Britain intrests in India it is important that she should maintain friendly relations with Thibet, using it, as Japan wants to nse Korea, as a butter against the encroach ments of Russia. Russia however, bv her wilv diDloma- cy has secured a dominating intiuence in Lbassa, the capital of the country. Some time ago. Col. St. Petersburg, June 9.-The Liao Yang correspondent of the Russ wires that a minor naval fight occurred in the Gnlf of Pechili, Wednesday, in which one Japanese battleship was sunk. Tbe correspondent adds that Chinese arriving from the south say tha Japan ese land and naval forces attacked Port Arthur on what day is not specified and were repulsed with a loss of 3,500 men and four war vessels, probably torpedo-boats. On June 7, the dispatch adds, the Japanesa bombarded the coast between Kwang Tung and Senychen, without casual ties. Great rejoicing has been occasioned by the Rues dispatch, and the streets are filled with jubilant subjects. The war office has either received no advices or has not sufficient news to warrant its issuing a formal statement regarding the loss of the battleship. While the department declines to be specific as to its source of information, a denial is made that the Japanese in flicted serious damage to Port Arthur forts in combined land and sea attack. Experts are disinclined to believe tbe Japanese had time to bring up siege guns, which would be necessary for land operations of a magnitude sufficient to do much damage. The Japanese have abandoned the ad ranee to the north from Feng Huang Cheng and west of Siuren. Tho report ed iunction of the Vladivostok, and Port Arthur fleets is wholly discredited and ! was a story sent out by an irresponsible press association. is easily understood. The grand lama with his armies is opposing Young husband's progress and several severe battles have taken place in the rugged, mountainons country. Of course, it is mere coincidence that the English government is pushing the column toward the heart of the hermit nation at a time when Russia is so fieri ously involved with Japan It is difficult to pred let the outcome It will probably require a large army and a big expedition to force a way to Lhassa. It may mean a repetition of the program in boulh Arfica. And yet English prestige requires that the effort be successful. Thibetan campaign is only one of the many moves in tbe eastern game nlaved so long by the diplomates of England ana Kussia, whose interests conflict Audit may easily lead to the long- threatened war between those countries.
