Grant county cobait may be shipped to Germany, to be used in the manu- facture of the Krupp guru, tf the deal now on between the Krupp company and the Standard mine people is suc- cessful. Zoe th Houser, one of the principal ow ners of the Standard mines says the Krupp people have made several offers for the cobalt output of the Standard, this famous mine yielding ab*>ut 17 per cent of this metal per ton. or 34* pound* of cobalt to the tone of ore The cobalt in the raw state is worth about 25*0 per ton. or 12 6« per pound In the refined state. A movement is now on foot to put in a mill and reduce the cobalt ores to a marketable product at the mine, and if this Is done, it will add an im portant industry to the Grant county mining district. Cobalt is found with gold, in large quantities in the ledge* of the Quartz- ♦ >urg grout*, included in the Standard, and a* cobalt Is a rare metal, and one that is indispensable in the manufac ture of heavy guns and armor plate, the possibilities of the new industry' may be Imagined. If the refining plant Is installed at the mine it will mean the employment of about 50 men. in addition to the miners and would enable the com pany to separate its gold from the ore at the mine, without the cost of long distance shipments to smelters. The Standard mine is the only one in the district that carries cobalt in large quantities.
