FAHJI 1TK3IS John Johnson writes that sheep fat inoro rapidly in October and No vnnber, if they have first rate pas sa ture, than at any other season of the year. In fattening sheep during the winter, it is of special importance that they be in good condition be fore being put on their wiuter feed. To 1'ickle Cucumbers, make a o pickle, one part vinegar, two parts water, three parts salt, to which add four ounces of horse radish for every half barrel. Fill the cask, or what ever vessel is to hold the pickles, half full of this pickle ; pick the cucum bers with the Lutt of the stem on, and wipe and put them into the ves sel. When it is full, place a cloth over the cucumbers, and a board, nicely fitted, over the cloth : a stone hhcuild be placed on the board to keep the cucumbers under the pickle. Wli?n needed for use, soak and put Usttn in vinegar as usual. AfrHhe recent auimatcd discus sions in regard to the deterioration Gf fruit treSs have led to tho pretty general conclusion that among other causes, poverty of soil is to be in c?uded, dhere is danger that the oppo site will prevail with some cultiva tors. A fruit tree may be surfeited as well as starvediud no little care is necessary to guard against ex tremes in either direction. It gen erally results in excessive and unnat-. nral growth, which is always secured at. t5 expense of the quantity and quality of fruit. There is a happy medium which the prudent cultiva tor will adopt.. Dry soil for fair quality, well worked, and moderately manured, will be found to answer ..best. ,For smaller fruits, as straw berries, raspberries, blackberries, &c, a rich soii is required. We have tried the following plan, and found it a certain cure for gapes in chickens : Take a medium niz.'d brocm splint, with a sharp knife make two or three barbs near the end. - Open the mouth of the chicken, , having its neck drawn straight, and, as the windpipe is opened for breath, . put in the instrument, and, running it carefully down the full length of : the . windpipe) turn it around and I'raw it np, when one or more small red worms, an inch in length, will be oaught in the barbs. We have ta ken out four worms atone insertion. Two or three operations arc often necessary, but if faithfully performed', , the remedy is sure. As a preventa tive, mix a small quantity of pepper and sulphur in their food. A calf kept winter and summpr in thrifty growth, at two years old will make as much more beef than one neglectfully kept at twice that nge. The profit will all be found on lite two-Year-old, and- the loss on the four-year-old ; yet the owner of the latter has pursued his system, if sys- tnuitcan be called, with the idea le wis, saving money. Keep the thrifty auimui two years longer in ' , ihe iaruc vayj and something very "Saudicmc iu the rrv of beef ill be the rcsu?t while the starveling can never pay the expense of its rearing and feeding. When young mtn begin to sing Ve won't go home till morning,'! they arc in a fair "way not to get there mr.ch before, that lime. MIS CELLANEO US. Removed ! Removed ! The old and well known Portland.
