The second lecture of the course under the auspices of the. OJJ Fellows, was delivered at tl e Court Houe on Tuesday evening last, by Hev. C. C. Stratton, of Port land. The sulject, as announced btweek,as"Eje to Eye" rd the lecture was designed to show the tendencies towards the happy time upokcaof in the Scripture, when men jiail see eye to eye. The lecture was coramfrced by alluding to the time when men were agreed npon all mat ters of religion and science. when none denied or doubted the prevail in" theories of religion, philosophy, geography or astronomy; but believ-t-d without question what they were taught, resulting in a unity of opinion, which the lecturer designated as the g -unity of ignorance. ThU unity of opit ion, being based upon ignorance, was destroyed when men began to think (or themselves, and the imrr.eli ate result of a general tendency to inv s 'ga'ion wasacb; oof opit.i jn which is to be followed by the unity of intelligence, resulting from free in quiry, tree speech, and a free press The lei t ror insisted th-it there is such a thing as truth in religion and science, and that mem arc endowed ly their Creator with minds capable O of receiving and comprehending trutnand that when men come to see and know the truth there ill be Guuity of opinion. The speaker paid a high tribute to the pen and press, as agencies in bringing order oat of the clmos of thought and opinion, which now prevails, and insisted that reason and the Bible would eventual ly lead men to that perfection of knoweldge which would enaWe them to see eye to ey-e. but we win not pretend to give even an outline of this most able and eloquent address. Let it suffice to say that is was heard throughout by a large and attentive audience, and we feel satisfied that all who heard it were both pleased imd instructed. The third Ucture wi!l be delivered m Monday evening next, Hon. J. II. Mitoiidl, sub ject, Henry the Eighth and his Qieens." We bespeak for htm a full house, as we feel satisfied, from the well known ability and eloquence v the speaker, that those who hear him will enjoy a " feast of icason and a Ho tif sou 7uk Laoils. We have no Anna DVkinsmi's nor Lucy Stones in Ore gon City, but we Have some cenuine "sirorr' minded women," and if our lidies do not choose to display their eloquence or their wisdom in the lec t'j'e reora, or on the rostrum, the fact may be attributed more to their na tive modesty and practical sense, than to a hick of ability ard energy. et any who -doubt this statement look out of their windows at almost Cimy time in the afternoon, and see them as they hurry to and fro with deternfmaUoM la -every xaovem-ent and inU'lliece in very feature. Tdtey are out x rratuls of love and mer cy, and wither storm nor fl ol .wind o . nor frost, can deter them from going to Selling's. mid levy's nd Diller's and Fleming's where they always provide thimselves w!th something nice for Clidstcias; atd already in imagination we bear tbe e.xokant shouts of the little ones, as they un conscfoV.sIy praise the tnergy which supplied Santa Claus with so many nice presents. o Tue Edwin Forest Booth Amx Tcuit Theatrical Assocaition. "We dropped in at Washington Hall the ether day, where the above asso eiution are preparing f r the recep tion of guests, and were surprised at the extent and beauty of the improve tnents ,a!inost comoltU'd. The stajze Arrangements opnear to be complet cd, and the hall is seated for the ac commodation of a large audience. It is expected that the company wilt be able to give their first public cxhibi tion sometime daring the holidays. lais is ccrtainlv an enternrise worthv .j t of patronage, and we hope none will vith hold it because it is a home proiluction. We believe in patron- uing home industry, whether it calls frjEf.'f11 !?a iu the shape ot material ouuctlgn, or evening amusements. Graxd Rafale oj? FjjrvITU&e J The chances in Messrs. He will please accept the thinks of thi-t ofiije for a friendly 'stick" which hc set up" yesterday o The Late Kaiss. We are in formed in Holy Writ that soon after Noah had prepared the ark for the accommodation of its numerous guests, " the windows of heaven were opened," and it continued to rain " forty days and forty nights" in con sequence of which the earth was sub merged and all its inhabitants drowned except those who were fjrtunate enough to have tickets in the ark. Well, the windows, of heaven were opened again, and it continued to rain only ubout five days andnigh s, "n this pat t of the world, but from the accounts we get it was fortunate it stopped so soon, because had it continaed the forty days aDd nights it is doubtful if any ark could have saved us. In our own city no harm was done, except the partial destruction of a culvert on Main street, unless we mention the discomfort occasioned by leaky roofs, 1 and cellars which were unprovided with culverts. The road leading south was much injured, and for three or four days the stage was un able to make its regular trips. The boats of the P. T. Co., made their regular trips, but were compelled to make a portage at Rock Island. Our city was visited by quite a number of persons, who ovailed themselves of the opportunity of seeing the Willamette Falls in all their gran deur and power. The water lacked about four feet of reaching the high water mark of last winter. Steamer Lewistox. This little craft tn ide its appearance at Cau field's wharf in this city on Monday last, having successfully passed all ihe dangers of the Columbia river from Lewiston to the mouth of the Willamette, including the falls at the Dalles and Cascades, apparently none the " worse for wear." It is understood that she is designed to ruu between this city and Portland in competition with the boats of the P T. Co., and in order to prepare for the trade she has gone to Westport to receive her upper works which at present are of canvas, and hardly suitable for a first clasj passenger boat. We a-dmire her pluck, con jiratuia'e ber upon her success in escaping the dangers of the flood, and welcome her to our waters. Christmas. From present indi cations we think Christmas will be rnnrtrtillir nlci-ri'( fl in tlli-R fifV 1)P.- IJV HI" J v ... v ... - J cause we hear nothing talked of but Christmas, Christmas trees, Christ mas parties, Christmas exmrsions, Christmas presents, and Christmas, Christmas, Christmas! There will be a magnificent Christmas tree at the Methodist Church, from which the children's time honored patron aint v. i I dispense his beneficence to the little ones; and it is rumored that some " children of larger growth" are looking for some of his favors, and Will be on hand to get their share. The Episcopal Church is be- inx tastefully decorated for the oc casion, as is u.cual with that church. The ball to be given by L. Diller, Esq., promises to Ihj a grand affair; and from all the indications we feel justified io prophesying for all our people, as we heartily wish them A MERRY CHRISTMAS Smw Last Wednesday after noon we had ft little genuine, old fashioned snow. It fell in small quantities, but what there was of it was the genuine article aud we prized it the uaore on account of its scarcity. It rains sometimes in Ore gon, but the fellow who said it rained tliirtern months in the year must have been mistaken; because we have about six or einht months of the most delightful summer in the world and every now and then we have a few minutes of genuine snowy winter, and placing it all together our part of the earth makes its annual revolu tion around the sun along with the rest of it, in twelve months and al most every twelve months brings with it a little snow to remind us that we live in a Northern latitude. Attack of Asthma. Mr. Eugene La Forest, who is tlerk ng for Mr. Thos. Charmaa had a very severe at tack of the asthma on last Tuesday, which prostrated him for about forty-eight hours, during which time he was not able to leave the store, but through the fraternal kindness of his friends his situation was rendered 3 comfortable a circumstances V014 permit, and we are happy to state trial fre is m a fair way lor re ocvpry. Fcgdiss KpEs.-r-Tbis stream is slow but sure; though sjow to rise it is sure to bo up, and hen it does rise it generally keeps up long enough to make people respect it.
