v 1 v ; - s ORESOB SENThm Saturday, Jrae 6, 1885. It ii expected thai the committee engaged in counting tbe tnonry and securities, finished and unfinished at ths bureau of engraving and printing, will Snisb. iti work to-morrow. 'Everything has Wen found to tally as perfectly as did the millions in tbe treasury vault. Everything and every sheet of paper that is bo care fully guarded, has Lesn found iu its proper place. It is quite possible th( t not a few Democratic citizens of this country, deceived by the turgid har angues of Mr. Hendricks and other "offensive partisan" cam paign orators, bar really believed tbat the treasury department was as corrupt as Babylon of old, full of dark and mjsterioua abominations which would all be brought to light when the books should be scanned by the sharp eyes of Demo crktic officii!. Ever since the count begin these people have been sitting with ears ageg listening for tbe crack cf doom. It may 'well be imagined -that a feeling of disappointment per vades the Democratic heart because there was nothing found to yell over. Certainly no higher compliment could be paid to the honesty and efficiency of the Republican administration than in contained in the mero fact that after twenty-four years of power, during which billions upon billion- of dollars have flowed in and out through all the devious channels of business, the cash is found to balance, even to the utter most farthing. New, York, June 2. Ssnatoi Voor hees says that Mr. Cleveland told bim tbat he intended to remove every Re publican office-holder of any promi nence at the very earliest possible mo ms nt. "The President," said the Senator, "assured me that not one of them would be left. Tie only delay now would simply be that which was absolutely necessary to secure good men to put in their places." There is to be" a gsneral change, and the balk of these changes will came very soon. A number of Illinois Democrats within 'he last few da a called at the White House and read the President a lecture, the sum and substance of which was that his eourse was sending the party to the bad. When they had coaeludsd the President observed that if they had been at home and hall as active there for the .interests of the party as they had been in Washington trying to divide up the offices among themselves, the party might perhaps have saved a "United States Senator, instead of losing one by allowing a State Senate district to go Republican by default. When ez governor Jarvis of North Carolina went to the state department to receive bis credentials as minister to Brazil he was accompanied by Sen ators Vance and Ranton. When be was about to be sworn the clerk said, as usual: "Hold up your right hand, governed" To which governor Jarvis replied. "Ob, no; I can't do that, for some of my northern friends, a few years ago, made that impossible." Then turning to the two senators from his state he said with much fervor: "Gen tlemen, this is the grandest and most magnanimous country on tbe face of the earth. Twenty years ago we were doing onr best to destroy this govern- 'sent, but failed. Now, instead of expatriation or any other punishment, yea are senators of the United States and I am. going abroad as an official representative of otr country at a for eign court There it nothing like this in history." This was an exprsssion of feeling that ncrthern people can ap preciate. In reference, to a petition of remon strance signed by Portland citizens and forwarded to Superintendent Wilder of the railway mail service ot San Francisco complaining of an order pre Vventing the sending of mail by steam er between San Francisco and Port land, Mr. Wilder says the petition will be forwarded to Washington. He also makes the explanation that it is only registered letters that are sent by way of Ogden. The regular mail goes by way of Delta, over the California and Oregon and the Oregon and Cali fornia railroads, and by stage 125 miles. Tbe time by steamer, which leaves once in five days, is from fifty tive ta sixty hours; via Ogden ninety two and one half hours daily, and by the California and Oregon and the Oregon and California railroads daily tty six hours. NThe a of horses and equipages at the Interior Department has been turned to good account in tbe purchase by the President of a magnificent brass ot steeds that will prance in front of the executive coupe with all; the gra-M and pomposity becoming a LOOO turn out. His Opinion. S. S. Train, editor of the "Herald Disseminator" of Albany, Oregon, who paid a short vi-.it to this sect'on a short time since, writes his observations to his paper from whith we make the following extracts: . One of the principal interests of Jackson county is mining, and al though some of the wonderfully pro ductive localities are comparatively ex hausted, there still remain good pay ing "diggings," and many of the ex hausted claims are being re-washed over at- remunerative rates., Jackson creek, from Jasksonville up, has been completely sluiced out, some places to the depth of nearly thirty feet. The place was pointed out to us where Mr. Shively of Astoria took out two mule loads about four hundred pounds of washed gold, in working out his claim. A little farther up the creek several parties, after 'taking out satis factory quantities, sold their claims to Chinamen, at from three to six thous and dollars each. After workinir as long as they saw fit to, the Chinamen engaged a teamster to haul the corpse of tbeir "big tyee," who they said had died and nhom they -.ere -going to take back to China for burial, to Coos Bay for shipment. They surrounded the coffin with burning' wax tapers and guarded it carefully all the way, keep ing the,:andles burning constantly and allowing no one but themselves to ap proach or handle the coffin. But after they had safely deposited their burden on shipboard at Coos Bay, they irvit- ed the American teamster to look at their dead comrade; when tbe lid was raised his astonished eyes viewed sixty thousand dollars worth of shining washed gold, instead of the body of a dead Chinaman. Sailor's gulch was pointed out to us, where a patty of rollicking sailors drifted a shaft sixty feet down tbe steep hillside to bedrock and "struck it rich." An old gentleman, now partly snpported by charity, and who is still digging with all the energy his failing strength will allow, mentioned localities where, in '52 he bad taken out $4,000, 2,000, and as high as $6,000. These old a'aims are now re claimed and being worked, some of them the third time. New claims are also being opened; but the great draw back for the past three years has been the lack of water to work with. One ditch, said to be ten tnilfcs'long, wn:cK -Lcoiiiavu co&c a large amount of money andjabor, has had no water in it for three years. Several of the mines have been accum ulating the "pay dirt," waiting for the water to come to wash with. The minej that are beginning to attiast at tention now, however, are the quartz ledges, of which there are a great many claimed. Indeed nearly every one of the inhabitants has a quartz claim somewhere in the mountains. The famous Gold Hill ledge, which prob ably yielded ?200,000, set everyone searching for like rick deposits, and many fully as rich will undoubtedly yet be found; for the whole country is rich in gold bearing quartz, and it only waits for the lucky man to discover the rich "pockets." Our furlough having expired, on Thursday, under the guidance of the miner, we explored the mountain sides, tops, ledges, deposits and .all, on a line from the camp to Gold Hill Sta tion. While traveling on the highest ridge back of Jacksonville, we observed a case of wanton destruction that de serves mention. We refer to thecutt ing down, apparently lor the seeds only, of the magnificent sugar pines. Such an act is certainly reprehensible in the extreme. A magnificent view of the Rogue river alley is obtainedTrom the moun tain top, -including tbe famous Table Rock, where-Gen. "Lane outwitted and got away with the Indiausin ye olden times. At tbe hospitable mansion of Mr. John SwinJen near Gold Hill we were regaled with a splendid supper, and also with a view of some fine speci mens of gold bearing quartz And in the night boarded the train for home being well pleased with our hasly vitit to this Switzerland of Oregon. Attached to the south bound pas senger train on Monday was the Pull man palace car "Albany," which so many have seen mention of in the daily papers ef the state. This car is a palace indeed, and took the first medal at the New Orleans Exposition; is fitted up in sumptuous style, and in its rich appointments of woodwork, uphoKtery, decorations and drapery, far surpasses anything of the kind that ever visited the golden shores of the far off slope. By this arrangement a Pullman sleeper will be attached to every through train on the O. fc C, making it much more convenient to the traveling public on this end of the route.
