At 1L-30 P. w. of May 23 rd, Victor Marie Hugo died at hishome in Pari, after a very short illness, aged 83 years, 2- montks and 26 days. He was one of the most distinguished of modern writers, his greatest work being the wenderful "Les Miserables." He was a native of 1a Yendee and a rank' royalist. He began his literary work at an early age and before he was thirty year old was famous. Odes, .ballads, -dramas and romance, flowed from his prolific'pen in profusion. In 1837, Louis Phillip! mads him an oSi- cer in the Legion of Honor and in 1845 a peer of France. After the revolution of 1848 he was elected to represent Pari?, both ire the Constitu ent and the Legislative Assembly, manifesting " Democratic principles, and was one of the rnembar? of the ex treme Left, banished from Fxance for life by Louis Napoleon. Residing in the island of Jersey, he assailed the emperor in several literary productions and upon the fall of the empire re turned to Paris. Upon his return, he joined in the Republican movement and was again elected to the National Assembly, which he soon left in disgust He then went to Brussels' but the Bel gian government expelled him frorr the country and he sought refuge in Vianden. a villiage of Luxenburgh. In his death the world loses one of the most wonderful authors it has ever known and one of his works,, "Les Miserables" would be sufficient to ren der his fame imperishable, had he written nothing eke. Boiled Ham. For a ham of about eleven pounds weight, take three coffee cups of cider and enough boiling wattr to cover the ham. Put the kettle where the con tents can simmer steadily for five hours, or till the bones are quite loose. Thenset the kettle off Jill theneU day, ana in the morninst'lfFt thTHanT from the water, take off the -akin, and if the fat is very thick shave some of it off smoothly. Put the ham in a slow oven for three-quarters of an hour. Just before taking it out put halt a cup of eider and a cup of brown sugar in a small frying pan and cook till tho cider nearly boils away and the sugar burns to a very dark brown. Spread this caramel frosting half an inch thick all over the1 top of the ham; it will harden at once into a beautiful polished crust. The ham must not be cut-till it is entirely cold. It is related that upon Tony Nolt ner's visit to Washington' he was in troduced to President Cleveland by Mr. Slater, with a great deal of cere uiony. lue ex senator stated that Tony had been a life-long Democrat, a delegate to the Chicago eonvention of 1834, and that he was the editor of the leading Democratic journal of Ore gon. The President tscrutizized Nolt ner closely, and after the pair had de- parted, turned to his private secretary and afcked: "Lamont, did Slater say t jat fellow ia the editor of the leading Democratic paper ef Oregon?" "He did, sir, responded Ihe secretary. "Then no wonder the State is So heart ily Republican," observed the Presi dent, as he returned examination of official documents. The Way to Kill a Towx. Horace Greely once said: "If you want to keep a town from thriving, don't erect any more dwellings than you can conven:ently occupy yourself. If you should have an empty building, and should, want to rfnt it, ask three the value of it. Demand Shylock prices for every foot of ground that God has given von stewardship over. Turn a cold shoulder to every inecban ic and business man who seeks to make a home with you. Look at every new comer with a scowl. Run down your "workmen. Fail to advertise in or support your' home paper. Wrap yourself with a coat of impervious selfishness. There is no better way to kill your town." A public sale of negroes occurred at Richmond, Va., May 5th, under the vagrant law. Orb of them brought 38 for three months; one SI 4 for three months, and a woman 25 cents for a year. A crowd at Heppner, last Fridays- demolished an opium joint, fired out' kome women of the town, and cow hided a gambler neiry ta death. JRESqg SENT1HEL ADVERTISING RATES. The" Ordinance Board of the United" States army has recommended the con struction of a m mster war baloon for the use of the government, and Qen. Russell Thayer, of Philadelphia, the iaventor, has received instructions to" begin the work. The board recommend? that a bal loon of seven tons ascending force be constructed and that trials be made" with.it.. It wi'l cost nearly $10,000. It will be the.largest baloon ever con structed with a diameter ef 60 feet and1 a length of 185 feet. Tho "dirigible war baloon," as it is called, is a cigar shaped machine pointed at both ends, and, unlike ordinary baloons, sailr through -the air longitudinally. It is about three times as long as it is wide. A working model constructed recently showed that the balloon would ba ef great value for war purposes. The balloon is said to be the moat destructive implement of war 'known' modern science. Gen Thayer clainir that he can lay a city in ashes with it in a night. Tons of dynamite percus sion bombs may be carried into the clouds and dropped while the balloon sails over a' camp or fortification or fleet ot ships. - Tho rumor in current in Washington that Spain has renewed her proposi tion to sell Cuba to the United States. Spain is in a bankrupt state and the sale of Cuba would greatly relieve ther pressure on her treasury. Of courstf Cuba would be a very desirable acqui sition for us, but the transfer would be found to be a very delicate matter in more cases" than one. The island has a population of a million whites and more than- half a million negroes. Of the latter nearly one half aro still slaves, although thousands have beea boegbt and set free by the govern ment, and all will be emancipated ier 1890. Phould we purchase Cuba, we' would have to take it subioct to thai conditions of slavery obtaining, or ifyjs we- declared, all its people we would $$lp. have te recompense all slave owners' for the siaveB we manumitted. The time has hardly arrived for possessing ourselves of Cuba, or the conditions are such as to discourage the consideration of any proposition from Spain, just at present, no matter how anxious she may be to dispose of the Queen of the Antilles. Cuba will become a part ot the United States in due time, at the' proper time that is destiny. A machine is fn use at Melbourne Australia, for shearing sheep br steam. It is made of brass something in the shape of a small trowel. The motion is got by a turbine wheel, on which ia fixed a iuCter; in front is a comb, which serves as a guard against cutt ing the skin of the sheep. The steam is conveyed from the boiler by a tube of India rubber. This tube or pipe is double, having one inside the other. Tho inner one is the injection. Tho machine is used in the same fashion af the shears, but cuts much quicker and" far cleaner, without the least danger of injuring the fleece or the sheep. "yrnp-or Fiji. Naturo's own true Laxative. A Washington special says: Wbils the President was receiving a cadet corps from a school in a neighboring Sta'e, a freckled faced woman who man-ged to get into the White Houso with the crowd, walked up and shook hands with Mr. Cleveland. She look, ed him in the eye and said: 'Mr. Cleve land do you ever expect to get mar rieci The President blushed, smiled, and the visitors who heard the remark had a good laugh."
