Tito "Tribune's" Wasbington special says: A prominent Democratic politician who recently held a long conversation1 witlrTiluen on political topics says that Tililen express es some douTrts as to whether, he will be able to secure the presidential nom ination next year. It seems 'hat Til den fears that the defection in the Sooth, addeA to the opposition ,in the ritray--rRi-fi chSnces.v inTbo co'ttversation the names of other possi- fble' candruatea were mrntioned, and their prospects were discussed. Tilden is reported" to hate iaid, regarding Da vid Davis, that the Democrats cannot afford and will not run a mail next year who has not always been known as a consistent and thorouglt Democrat. The salvation of the Democratic party depends on that course, anil no matter how obscure the candidate, his democ racy must bo unquestioned. Being pressed to name a candidate aside from himself, who would answer all the re cjuire'rrcnts, he is said to have remark ed that Justice Field of California nji pcared to him tir bb tpe strb'agcsC tind most available man; that Field's rela tives were very wealthy and would be willing to spend a million or two if ho were nominated; that tle Pacific strifes wotftfl uinfoabte'dly bo solid in" Iris fa'for and that he would stand a better chance in New York and other doubtful north ern states than any other of the candi dates whose merits had been discussed. Tiklete k rr.ortcd also to have said, hcirercr, that Re did not sen how Dem ocrats could afford to nominate any one except himself. Gover nor Robinson's phtn fitswcll to Tilden s prophecy, as though the two had come out of the same shop, and the public, which is often suspicious, will go near to believe that in fact the Governor is less solicitous for the important inter ests of the State than to secure his ffriend ad patron, Tilden's supremacy in tht State convention. Meanwhile the "Trfbtmc" continues to ridicule tho Democratic situatso'ii, pointing out that if Tilden were really elected in 1S7G, and cheated out of the election, the Democracy can do no less than vindicate him in 1S80, and if not so elected then thev havo lied for thres years in crying "Fraud!" tiic iicki: in:nvr.n.Y.vn:.-i.- Now that the free delivery system is a certainty for Portland iiv the near future, says the "Oregonian' a descrip tion of its working will be in order. Correspondence in South Africa agree that the capture of Cctewayo is all important, because as long as he is free he will remain the center of conspiracy and mischief. Gen. Wolsely, however, has no inten tion of pursuing him with British troops as the nature of tho country renders such a course impracticable. His policy is rather to stir up neigh boring tribes against the king. Agents have been sent to fclro Owazies and Ama'tougas witn1 hfs viei? and 6",000 catllohavo been offered Ohaiu if he would, capture his brother. One tel egram says that the prico has been set on Cctcwayo's head. Gen.. "Wolsley in an address to a number of chiefs on July 12th, informed them that he had no desire to take any" of their territory but that Cctewayo'was a f ugilrVo and cotild never mote be a king. Gener al Wolsley had" summoned all native chiefs to meet him nt Emangmere, a fort nine' miles north of Umalatoosa I river on July 19th, to hear his final words of settlement. Tho chiefs at the meeting on July 12th declared that the Zulu nation had now iio head. Tftiev ViJs'rtA to lu'avtiio more1 black kings, nnd said they would prefer John Dunn for king. They prolniscd to bring all the chiefs of coast districts to the Eniangmero meeting. These tribes however do not constitute the most warlike part of the nation. A flying column started for Emangmere July 14th to prepare for the meeting. Gen. Wolsley and staff will follow. It is reported from Luneburg thatCetewayo with 7000 followers, is endeaVoring to escape across tho northern border to join Secconi.
