The acts creating these po sitions were dated: secretary of war, Awgnst 7, 1789; secretary ot the treasury, September 2, 1789; secretary f state, September 15, 1789; attorney general, September 24, 1789. An act temporarily establishing the postoffice department was also passed September v 22, 1789, but it was not until May 8, 17947 that it was made a ; permanent - creation. Even then the, postmaster- general was not a cabinet official. ' He was sunnosed to be a subordinate of . the treasury department. President Jackson in 1 829 invited the then in cumbent to . attend cabinet meeting, . Jind since' that . date the postmaster- general has been by custom a member of the cabinet . The navy department, was created April 30, 1798. Prior to that time the naval branch of the military service was under the secretary, of war. The first secretary of the navy was George - Cabot of Massachusetts. After that there was no additions to. the cabinet until the interior department was es tablished, with Thomas -Ewing - of .
