BODY FOClCD WITH BULLET HOLES IN HIS
SOREHEAD AND THROAT CUT.
A man named M. Nyckard, who has been
working in the logging camp of Mr. J. Wik
man on South. Slough, left the camp last
Friday in a skiff, saying he was going to
Marshfieid, and would return to camp on
Monday. On his way to Marshfieid he call
at at Empire where he remained till about
o'clock in the evening. On monday last

of Empire City on the beach, and on exam
ination several ballet holes and a cat from a
harp instrument were found upon it, indi
cating that he. bad been foully dealt with.
We understand that a warrant has been is
sued for the arrest of the supposed uiur-
FlNE Pictures. One day this week we
called at the studio of Miss McFadden,
tetcher of drawing and painting at the Agri
cultural College in this city and were sur
prised as well aa highly gratified at the fine
display of paintings in course of completion
by various students of this city. The pic
tures reflect great credit on the students
and speak in the highest terms of the ability
of Miss McFadden as an instructor. We
are lad to see this branch of art being
taught in the college and feel assured that
it will Boon become quite common among
die students as well as other parsons nrgt at-
tending college. Miss McFadden will cofi
inaa to give lessons during- vacation. Some
t f the paintings of the class will be finished
and on exhibition at the coming college com
mencement which will add an interesting
feature to the occasion.

ing his brother John Smith in this city, he

It is a puzzle to us how a woman can re
ly on the sight of her two eyes when she al
ways keeps one eye onold man.
Miss Amelia Stock, who has been visiting
in Portland for several months, returned
home last Wednesday.
Last Friday evening we paid Philomath a
flying visit and was pleased to note the ap
parent prosperity of the town.
An overland excursion from Portland to
Boston will start May 1st. A stop over of
two days will be enjoyed at Niagara.
Geo. Cochran is at Geo. Houcks farm on
Monday and Tuesday of each week with his
celebrated young horse Calapooia Chief.
There will be an excursion by boat from
Harrisburg to this city next Tuesday under
the auspices of the Odd Fellows society.
If you want to enjoy an evening in an in
tellectual and pleasing manner, go to the
Opera house to-morrow night and hear Mrs.
Smith read.

Capt. J. F. Denny arrived to-day and
will take the tug Gen. Wright to the Col
umbia. Capt. Pennell's remains were taken
up and will be shipped on the Wright to
Astoria, thence by steamer to California.
The captain, it seems is a relation of Capt.
Stahman Forney. U. S. C. S., who assisted
Lieut. A. W. Chase in the first snrvey of
Yaquina Bay in 1868. The body of Frank
Winnemark, one of the unfortunate men
drowned here on the 7th. was found 4 1-2
miles south of the Bay. The body was
identified at the inquest.
The tug Gen. Wright draws light 6 12
feet. She has been making daily trips, of
ten at low tide, to the quay, a distance of
16 miles from Newport, and could go at
half-tide to Elk City easily.
Anotner piece oi lolly occurred nere on
the 11th. The Sbubrick arrived with
some freight for the government works. It
was a risky business going to sea without a
captain, but Eng'r Polhemes was equal to
the emergency; he employed Capt. J. M.
Aylea to accompany the party in case of a
change in the weather and a night at sea.
The lead was kept going and the least water
found was 20 feet. Inspector Rector was
aboard and saw the soundings. He can
probably remember something of a report
made by the Captain of the Shubrick last
year, that resulted in that vessel being
'barred out" of Yaquina Bay. The Shu
brick oWw 9 ft. To an orhinary man 1 1 ft.
of water under a vessels keel would seem to
be sufficient. The tug secured the freight
and came in late on the evening tide. The
least cast was 12 feet and she draws 8 ft. of
water, only 1 foot less than the Shubrick
did with an 18 foot depth of water to sail in.
It is pretty near time for the people to put
a stop to this display of incapacity, if not
imbecelity. Nothing but a deep seated
prejudice derived from an association with
those opposed to the future growth and de
velopement. A sea port opposite and near
the Willamette Valley prompts those in
charge of this tender ot the light house to
act so conspicuously ignorant of matters
well understood by sea faring men of judg
ment and ability. There is not another
man, except Capt. Everson, so devoid of
that essential pride and spirit to be found
on the coast, in command of a side wheel
boat drawing only 9ft of water that would
hesitate to cross a aaotb bar with 18 ft of
water to ply in.
The practice of patience will not suffice
when the interest of the country is at stake.
Let us get rid of this official seal placed
through design or ignorance on one of the
aafest harbors out the coast.

A CORRECTION,
Ed. Gazette :
I am informed that one M. H. B ell, who
aspires to be a candidate for the office of
City Marshal, has pursuaded a number of
voters to visit a sewer in the lower part of
the city, and has informed said persons and
any and all other persons, who would listen
to his silly prattle, that I received from the
City of Corvallis the sum of $28 for certain
work on said sewer, and that the same was
not worth half 'that amount. The simple
facts in .the case are, that, under the imme
diate direction of the Street Commissioners,
I performed five day's work on said sewer,
aud put in my bill therefore to the City
Council for the sum of $10 and no more.

Returned. Messrs. Norman Ellfott ann
J. 8. Jeffries who graduated from the Agri
cultural College of this city a few years
since, have just completed their course and
graduated from the Law University at Ann
Arbor, Michigan, and returned home last
nanek. Both these young men are well
known in our city and have the kindest
wishes of hosts of friends here. As yet nei
ther have located for the practice of their
profession. Their life is yet before them
but from our knowlege of their character
and ability w unhesitatingly assert that it
will be a success.
Am Episcopal Conference. Bishop Tat
tle of Utah, is on the way overland through
Idaho, and will be joined by Rev. Thomas
Smith at Union or La Grande. They will go
over the mountains together to meet Bishop
Morris at Pendleton. The three will then
journey to Walla Walla to meet the new
Bishop of Washington Territory, Rev. J. A.
Paddock. There they will meet the Rev.
Mr. Wells and the Rev. Dr. Nevius, where
a consultation will be held as to future mis
sionary efforts in Washington Ty., Eastern
Oregon and Idaho.

Messers Lewis and Osborne have comple
ted the renovation of their meat market and
are now ready to '"feed the hungry". On
next Tuesday they will open and they invite
the public to come and take a look. They
promise to sell the most' juicy and tender
meat in the city.
New Comers. Messers Will Bros have
located in our midst permanently and have
opened a gun and ammunition store. They
have a large stock of all that pertains to
their line and are thorough workman. The
public are bound to receive satisfaction. We
call attention to their new ad.
Select Reading. Mrs. D. F. Smith of
Portland, will pi ve a select reading at Ham
ilton's Opera Honse to-morrow night. Many
of our readers will remember her aa the lady
who gave a similar entertainment in this
city butt June. We have never attended an
entertainment that afforded more perfect
satisfaction than the one just mentioned.
Her selections are good and rendered in the
very best style. No one who enjoys a real
elevating and refining entertainment can af
ford to miss this opportunity of hearing
Mrs. Smith.

Ou r new Assessor is making a grand start,
and if he keeps up at this rate, he will cer
tainly be re. elected again when his term of
office expires. He appears to be a good
judge of the valuation of land. Some of the
finest farming land in the counjty he is east
sing at $7 per acre, while the land along the
foot hills and mountains he assesses at from
910 to 812 per acre. So yon see Mr. Editor
we poor cusses will have to pay most of the
taxes. I most emphatically protest against
this kind of thing, and would recommend
that onr good looking Assessor be furnished
a substitute, and that he retire to the shades
of private lite, it may be that m conse
quence of coming so near losihg his office.

The Hazlbwood News. An illustrated
monthly devoted to the religious and secu
lar interest of Hazlewood, Pa., under the
above name, and edited by Rev. D. K. Nes
bit, has been placed on onr table. The pa
per is ably edited and in every editorial
bears the unmistakable hand of its editor,
who will be remembered by many of our
city readers aa the popular parlor of the
Presbyterian church at Corvallis, from 1870
to 1874. In the short items we find the fol
lowing characteristic hit: "March ought to
go out like a lamb," It came in like an
Oak Alley church meeting.
