And all this is the outcome of what the Oregonian ot March 14th called a " soimd and liberal " policy tot the country. Does it hurt ? Do you like the gentle pressure ? Or do you begin to believe that the price is just a little high for this great man's choosing Oregon for his stamping ground ! QUESTIONS TO ANSWER. On March 26th Mr. Villard tele graphed lo the Oregonian " all you have said iu the Oregonian regarding our obtaining control of the Northern Pacific is substantially true." We all know that we have heard nothing else since the second week in March but suggestion after suggestion about the "admirable management and nc eess " of this "magnificent" operation till even Mr. Villard must be sick of hearing the same tune sung so often. But now the great man tells the in terviewer of the St. Paul Pioneer press " I have never said that I own ed' a controlling interest in the North ern Pacific." Has the Oregonian correctly re ported him ? If so, how do white and black agree ? EASTERN FREIGHT REDUCTIONS- Chicago dispatches of the 1 1th inst. state that, at a meeting of the gener al freight agents representing the trunk railway lines from that point to Atlantic shipping points, the rate on grain was reduced to 25 cents on the 100 pounds. The old rates were 30 to 40. The new rate is equal to $5 per ton. The distance from Chicago to New York being 930 miles, it amount to a little over a half-cent per ton per mile; or, to be precise, 0.555 cents per ton per mile. The reason given for the reduction is that the Mirtsisippi river being now open from St. Louis to New Orleans, freights by water will be as low as the point to which the railways have come down. This is only a part of the mo tive. The water routes . by way of the lakes and Erie canal are also open and freights by that route- will be nearly as low as by the Mississippi route. Still another reason is found in the necessity of doing something to silence or obstruct the very gener al movement now making throughout the country to check the growing power and aggressiveness of trans portation monopolies. At halt a cent per ton per mile the producers ot grain in the western states have no good reason to eomlain. But let the agitation against the tyranny of the monopolies cease, and the instant the lake and river routes shall be again closed next fall, up would go rates on grain again to 40 cents a bund red. The remedy of the evil is hi-the bands of the farmers themselves if they will apply it by political agi tation and at the elections, both state federal. A coyote club will be organized at Eugene City on the 23d. The Oregonian Railway Company (limited) is building & mail car at Ray's landing. Marion county farmers- are ct kick ing " at the outlandish transportation charges made by the narrow gauge; Dir. Folkman, editor of the- Stoats Zeitung, of Portland, was horse whip ped by Charles Baecbler, a rival edi tor,, last week; W. W. Holcomb.of Goldendaler has been arrested and fined for ab stracting from the minutes of the city conncil the mi notes appertaining to his expulsion as City Recorder. Sheep shearing has begun in Jack ion county. THE PHILOSOPHY OF NIHILISM, Those who have looked upon the Czr of Russia as a tyrannical (sover eign because he did not consult the wishes of the Nihilists, bare the im pression that these people are demand iug reforms in the interest of the poorer classes, and the Cz-tr would not listen to them. Of course Russia is the most absolute monarchy in the world and its treatment of Poland in the past has been brutal and despotic in toe ex treme, bat it is well understood that the assassinated Czar assumed the throne with the best of intentions to wards the welfare of Russia and the happiness of his people. He freed the serfs; bat of coarse they were not given the same liberty now possessed by the former slaves of this country. They were forced to re main in Russia, and were otherwise deprived of rights not known in des potic countries. His plan was to gradually unp.ove his people and fit them or the heritage of all trne men freedom. Because he did not eman cipate these ignorant, semi birbaric people instantly and clothe them with a license to do what they chose, the Nihilists justify themselves in murder ug him Such- a creed should be stamped from the earth, and we ean assure these corwardly assassins that in America tbe land of liberty P tbeir villaineus philosophy is as repulsive as slavery. Nihilism bad its birth among aristocrats and nobles of Rus sia, whose immorality led I ben to break down all tbe barriers prevent ing the fall enjoyment of their passions, and of coarse tbe first step in this di rection was to embrace infidelity, and proclaim the absence of a Deity; that there should be no virtue in tbe land; marriage should be unnecssary; alf that was sacred must give place to corruption. The majority must wipe out the minority. That oar readers may better understand tbe philosophy of Nihilism, or the philosophy of nega tion, we give someextracts.as advocat ed by these fanatics takeu from the Binghamtoo Leader, Th is gospel admits of no half meass ure or hesitation. The old world must be destroyed and replaced by a new one. The lie must be stamped out and give way to troth. It is our missiou to destroy the lie, and to effect this we must begin at the verv commencement. Now tbe beginning of all these ties wbicb nave groans cown this poor world iu slavery is God. Tear out of your hearts tbe'beliei in the existence of a God, for so long as an atom of that silly superstition remains in your minds you wiU. never know what freedom- is. When you get rid ot this priest-begotten God, and when, more over, you are convinced that your ex istence and that of tbe surrounding world is due to tbe conglomeration of atoms in accordance with tbe laws of gravity and attraction, then and then only yon will have accomplished tbe first step toward liberty, and yoa- will experience less difficulty in ridding your minds of that second lie wbicb tyranny has invented. Tbe first lie is God and tbe second lie is right. Might invented the fiction of right in order to insure and strengthen hee reign. Might forme the-sole ground work of society. Might makes and unmakes laws, and that might should be in the hands of the majority. Once penetrated with a clear convict ion of your own might, yoa will be able to destroy tbis mere notion of right. And when you have freed your minds from tbe far of a God and from that childish respect for the fiction ot right, then all the remaining chains which bind you and which are called science, civilization, property, marriage, moral ity and justice, will snap asunder like threads. Let your happiness be your oul v law. Bat in order to get this law recognized and to bring about tbe proper relations which should exist be tween tbe majority and minority of mankind, you mast destroy everything which exists io tbe shape of state or soci.il organisations. Our first work mast be destruction and annihilation of everything as it now exists. Yoa mast act-us tern yourself to destroy everything the good with the bad. For if an atom of this old world re main", the new will never be created. Take heed that no ark be allowed to rescue any atom of this old world, which we consecrate to destruction. OREGON WAR MMDS. The following circular will be of interest to holders ot Oregon war bonds of 1861 : Washington, D. C, April 11. Notice is hereby given to holders- of the U. 8. six-per cent, bonds, issued under tbe act of March 2, 1861, and commonly known aa the "Oregon War Debt," that said bonds, with ac crued interest there!, will be paid at this department, July 1, 1881, and. interest on said bonds win cease that day. These bond are in denomina tions of $50 Otte and $500, and bear the inscription " Oregon War Debt." All bonds forwarded for redemption should be addressed to the Secretary of the treasury, .Loan Division, Washington, I. C. and should be as signed to the Secretary, of the Treas ury for redemption. When parties desire cheeks is payment for bonds drawn to the order of any one but the payee they should assign them to tbe secretary of the treasury for re demption for account of tbe person or persons to whose order they should be made payable. Times, reviewing Jeff Davis' book, says that it takes con spicuous pains to assuie his leaders that he has not changed bis mind in regard to any of the questions which involved the country in a terrible war; he is evidently the same uncom promising and unrepentant rebel de scribed by Zach Chandler in his mem orable speech made in the U. S. Sen ate shortly before bis death. Alto gether his' book aa a " vindication of the principles which animated the Confederates " ean.only be regarded as a very dismal failure. For his own reputation it would have been much better had he never written it. He should not bav again thrust himself into public notice. The country has bad quite enough of the man who led the lost .cause. ITEMS ST TELEORAPH. The flax mill of Smith & Dove, manufacturing company at Fryeville, Mass., burned recently ; loss, $75.00o; insured. Sergeant Bates, who carried a U. S. flag through the south and through Europe after the war, died at Say brook, 111.,, on the 13th, leaving a wife and six children in extreme pov erty. A heavy frost is reported through out the state of Texas-,, doing consid erable damage to corn, cotton, fruit, and vegetables. A number of NihHwts on the 14th, attacked the troops guarding the prison in which the condemned Nihil ists ace detained. Twenty Nihilists were captured with bombs in tbeii possession. Dr. Carver, the American marks man, has challenged ten best shots of the Hurhngham Club and Unn Club of London, to a pigeon shooting match for 500, the doctor shooting 1000 pigeons to his opponents 100 each. Number of immigrants arrived du ring March, 44,121. of whom 19,000 were from Germany and 3000 from Spain. The number arriving during the nine months ending March 31st was 121,422. Of these 102,000 were from Germany, 87,000 from Canada and 33,000 from Ireland. The Czar's murderers were hanged at St. Petersburg on the 15th. A satisfactory trial of Edison's electric light was made at New York on the 15th. Storms prevailed on the Atlantic coast on the 15th, of greater intensity than any in mid-winter. The tonnage situation remains un changed in San Francisco. The mar ket has lost none ot its strength. A miner's hospital has been start ed in California, with Hearst, Hy den felt, Daggelt, Redding and Coleman as trustees. Charles Pierrponet, freight conduc tor on the U. P., shot and k lied in cold blood, roadraaster C. H. Graves at Laramie City on the 15th. J. G. Unser, dispatch clerk in the Cincinnati postoflice was caught in the act of stealing, a decoy package having been set foi htm. Valuable packages have been missing for sev eral months. One of the largest cattle transac tions ever made has just been closed by Messrs. Histers, of St. Louis, and Simpson, of Weatherford, Texas, pur chased the famous Millet ranch for $300,000, The incorporators transferred the franchise for a railroad from Matamo ras to Monterey, Mexico, to Sullivan Jb Palmer, and the contract for the construction of the road has been made. . At the Dalles, on the 15th, J. B. Dickinson's barn was destroyed by fire, totally con sum in or a lot of hay. oats and barley, and burning four horses; loss about f 1,600; supposed incendiarism. The conviction is rapidly forcing itself no the people that the world's fair will surely collapse. A meeting of the commission was not held ow ing to the absence of some of tbe members, and the decision of the question was delayed some days. A fearfnl flood prevailed Ifthrough out Wisconsin on the 18th. The rainfall was heavy, especially in the central and southern part of California on the 7th, where it was most needed. An imprudent Socialist named K'jttz, has written President Garfield that he is a despot and should be treated to dynamite. J. W. Humble, a young English man, who had been unfortunate in stock speculations, cat his throat in Chicago on the 1 7th. PACIFIC COAST Everything is favorable for an im mense crop in the Patouse country. Hon. M. C George, M. C, has ar rived home from Washington, D. C. Lumber is now rafted on the Ne- halem. The 8810)00 catcb thus far at Asto ria is very light. John Ulrich, formerly a boss at Aiosworth, was brought to Colfax, on the 14th for examination as to sanity. He died in the stage the morning before it arrived. It is sap posed that morphine, administered at Ainsworth, killed him. A grist mill is to be built at Wood burn. One of Hume's fisherman caught a 52-pound . salmon at Astoria on Sat urday last. Mr. S. Hannah was sunstrnck last week at Union white working in his garden. Catharine Duncan, mother ot Geo. C. Duncan, of Paisley, died at that place March 29.1881, aged 72 years. Lane county has purchased ti e toll bridge which spans the Klamath river at Plevna. No toil is now charged for its use. A granary 40x40 will be built near the Silvcrton depot tin spring by J. Wolford & Co. There will he considerable build ing in the vicinity of SUverton this spring. Among those noted are three school houses and several barns. R, L. Harding, of Columbia county owns a three-year old Clydesdale colt that weighs 1520 pounds.
