ON MT. JEFFERSON. LaBt week Judge Burnett, Lem Gates, E. O. Neal, and J. H. Collins went to the top of Mt. Jefferson. The Judge givea the Stateman an account of it, of which the following is the most inte e-ii.; part: Aftet climb'ng the southwest ridge to the base of the pinnacle, they passed around to the west side by a trail shov eled ia the side of an almost perpendio alar snow field, being the same route used by Mr. Robin's first party. From there, by the aid of a rone, an 1 )y hang ing ou by handi, knees and Ktr, they climbed to the top of the north peak. Just as they reached there a g-at thun der storm burst upon tliem. i Id Jeffer son having his solitude disurbed by tuese reckless climbers, eeeme I to have summoned to his aid all the artillery of iue neavens to a rive tnem tram the height. The different members oi the party felt several electrical shocks. Tne lightning played about their heads, and they were pelted wita hail nd enow, while the thunders roared and the wind blew a blast. To the west the storm took the appearance of an immense black curtain, streaked at times with forked lightning, but preventing all view in that direction. Under such circumstances staying on the mountain's top was dan gerous, as the great quantity of iron in the rocks attracts the lightning. The summit has no doubt otten been struck by ligbtning,as the, rocks are split and fractured in every direction into iragnientfc ot every siae, Irom tons in weight to those the size of a Dea. .Neither was it an ideal day for phntog- opujf, ua it remains to De seen whether iur. ttooim s enoris in that line were successful . All we could do was to reset the flag planted there three weeks before by Rob lin's first prty ; register our names in the Mazamas' bosk ; sing America ; give . three cheers for Old Glory, all of which we did, and began the descent. Soon after leaving the pinnacle, while the Moral still raged about ns.the clouds opened to the east and there lay the hill country of Crook county, basking in the eunshine like a beautiful vision of the promised Und; and by the time we got half way down the mountain it was clear and the heavens were calm. The invad ers had been repelled and peace restored on the heights. It is believed that Gates and Roblin have taken the Mazamas' box and put it where the owners cannot get it, towit, on top of the mountain. V. this be larceny it i3 not probable that prosecution will .follow, for it is nncertain whether it oc curred in Crook or Marion counties. TCJESDAuC Waterloo and Sodaville. Waikrloo, Aug. 8th, 1897. What will probably prove a fatal stab bing affray occurred at the Beaver creek school house, last Saturday night. A dance was in progress at the place and some misunderstanding aross between Horace Ctd ie of this city and a Mr. Bush ot John Day. As near as we can learn several of the boys tried to scare Bush and were the aggressors in the quarrel, among them was Horace Cad.e i; is said that Cad.e called Bush vile nauies.slapped him and than struck him, knocking him down. Bush got on his feet and ran at Cadle, striking him with a long bladed pocket kuile. the blade entering the skull 3 list above the left ear, tne Diade only entered about an inch but as Cadle fell the knife struck the wad and forced the blade full length into nis neaa . journal. Last Saturday evening Ijite Shelby and Theo. Cadle came in town having caught him on the South fork ol the John Day. He had been wandering around the mountains and was returning to his home so he informed Mr. Shelby, when that officer ran across him. lie was taken before Recorder Bell, acting justice of the peace last Monday on the charge of murder. Dr. H. P. Belknap and George Cline returned last Thursday from Portland via the Santiam route. Doc reports that the only thing one can hear in the Willam ette valley is something about their good crops or the Clondyke, John Talt, a printer, of Al)any, and Peter Williams, an artistic sign pain.er were in the city during the first of the week. They are on their way to Lake view and surrounding country. The board of directors for this school district last week, selected the following teachers: Intermediate room, Miss Mar- garie Brink; advanced primary. Miss Ivy Temoletonr primary. Miss Effa Crooks. The board has not vet deter mined upon a principal.- -Review. aatic in hie free advertisement of thn Waterloo soda springs. He says that he nas not Deen here this summer for which e are very grateful. We have bad hood lums and skaltey wags enough from Sod avilie and other neighboring towns and we ask of Caelebs as a particular favor that he wtll stay away. We infer from his letter that he was here last summer. It is true that Waterloo is a one-horse town, we are free to admit all of that. A e also admit all of the glory and high moral qualities claimed for the average resident of the greater Sodaville includ ing the drunken man mentioned in out ing No. 4. The papulation of Waterloo ia made up of common, hari working every day people and they are totally lacking in that pure high toned blue blood that marks the Sodaville man all ove the civilized world. Caelebs says thatthe.e are more campers in Sodaville than there are in Waterloo. The reason for una is very plain, with such an iitr, imn as Caelebs the town of Sodaville ought i uuuum its population every six months. He says that we are running a mr,. go-round, a dance, a horse race and a saloon. We would like to ask Caelebs if he honestly brieves that a one horse town as he ca Is Waterloo couhl all of those amusements without anv hel p from the sreater Sodavi I la. No nn Oaelebs, we honestly believe that if the high toned, moral blue bi.od citizen of the greater Sodaville would alav at home on the blessed Sabbath day and read his bible or other good books instead of coming to Waterloo to see the horse race and the merry-go-round and get staving drank and make a holy show of himself th 1 moral effect wo-dd be wonderful. What the peopie of Waterloo want is a good example from Sodaville and if some of the people up there don't mend their ways when they come to Waterloo, holy water will not save them, let alone soda water. And, now Caelebs we have made these comments in a friendly spir it and hope that you wiil accent them aa snch, we also hope that you will see the folly of tearing down your neighbors to make a foundation upon which to bnild up a reputation for your own town. If you want to build np your town do it in an honorable, manly way. Remember the good book says. "Ye that are inno cent cast the first stone." You may have more campers and belter sodawater than we have but if you don't do better in outing No. 5, we shall conclude that you have cot got brains enoueh to run a one-horse town. Let use irive you a pcin'er, don't use so many big words. use tne mojt common expressions in general use and put more brains into it. in oiner words throw your whole soul into it and lay on McDafT. SlIOBTIK. The Crops. The warm, dry weather was of no in jury, but on the other hand, was of great oenent to tne bops. Hop lice thrive in warm, moist weather and are ait'.ed by hot dry weather, hence the great benefit to the hops in the killing ot the '.ice. The reports from the hopyards indicate a great improvement in conditions and prospects. The hop louse continues to be very numerous, but at present uo wholesale destruction is imminent. The harvesting of fall and winter sown grain continues. Threshing has com menced in some localities. The excel lent reports heretofore rnvle concerning the fall and winter sown grain continue: the yield, where threshed, is fuily en average one and the berry is very plump and heavy. Oats Is a very good heavy crop, also. The warm weather is ripen ing spring wheat and oat 9 very rapidly, and they offer prospects for excellent re turns. The fruit cop is one of the largest ever had in the state. B. S. Fagck. Better than Kloiulyke. From the Pendleton East Oregonian Eighteen months ago a certain farmer who trades in Pendleton. lost his land by foreclosure of the mortgage upon it and found himself with some farming ma chinery, horsoa and wagons which he knew hardly what to do with. The idea occurred to him to rent some reserva tion land and make one more attempt at raising wheat, lie did so and at once set to work to put about 2000 acres in wheat the next fail. He seemed assist ance fiom a friend who had more confi dence In the farmer than the farmer h d in himself. The land was thoroughly worked and the wheat well put in. The favorable season came and with it came ft great crop and a great pr.ee. The re sult, the farmer finds himself, after pay ing all expense?, with wheat on hand worth at leest z;i5,000. w ai m another 00 days he expects to have the wheat sold and the sum named to his credit in the bank, and if he should tet 75 cents a bushel for it he will have $41,000 as the profit of a year and a half of bar 1 work But this is an exceptional year. Clon dyke farming in Eastern Oregon dates from lst)7. There are over one hundred farmers in Umatilla county who have cleared this Beacon from $7,000 to $35 - 000 raising wheat. The city council lat night appointed a committee to investi gate the pitting of ttie pipes in the boiler ot -No 1 a engine t hese pipes wtre all rent wed about three years ago, and now J are pitted eo tiadijr as to necessitate an o'her complete renewal. This is being done at the f sundry, at considerable of a cost to the city. The reason given to the Democbat at the foundry is that the wa ter was allowed to stand in the boiler for months, in fact years, becoming stag nant, creating acids that eat, whereas it ought to le renewed every to or three weeks. When hot it does no injury, but when cold, or lukewarm, aa it is most of the time, this stagntnt dirty water doen its work.
