ON MT. JEFFERSON.
LaBt week Judge Burnett, Lem Gates,
E. O. Neal, and J. H. Collins went to the
top of Mt. Jefferson. The Judge givea
the Stateman an account of it, of which
the following is the most inte e-ii.;

direction. Under such circumstances
staying on the mountain's top was dan
gerous, as the great quantity of iron in
the rocks attracts the lightning.
The summit has no doubt otten been
struck by ligbtning,as the,rocks are split
and fractured in every direction into
iragnientfc ot every siae, Irom tons in
weight to those the size of a Dea.
.Neither was it an ideal day for phntog-

successful .
All we could do was to reset the flag
planted there three weeks before by Rob
lin's first prty ; register our names in
the Mazamas' bosk ; sing America ; give
. three cheers for Old Glory, all of which
we did, and began the descent.
Soon after leaving the pinnacle, while
the Moral still raged about ns.the clouds
opened to the east and there lay the hill
country of Crook county, basking in the
eunshine like a beautiful vision of the
promised Und; and by the time we got
half way down the mountain it was clear
and the heavens were calm. The invad
ers had been repelled and peace restored
on the heights.
It is believed that Gates and Roblin
have taken the Mazamas' box and put it
where the owners cannot get it, towit, on
top of the mountain. V. this be larceny
it i3 not probable that prosecution will
.follow, for it is nncertain whether it oc
curred in Crook or Marion counties.

Messrs Woraweiler and Thomson of
Joseph, Oregon have purchased M. Sich
el & Oo's entire merchandise business
and will take charge in a short time,
Mr. Wersweiler is now in the merchan-
tile business in Joseph, but will spend
most of his time here, his partner,
Mr. Thomson, is 01 1 of the leading stock
men of that section.
What will probably prove a fatal stab
bing affray occurred at the Beaver creek
school house, last Saturday night. A
dance was in progress at the place and
some misunderstanding aross between

Bush and were the aggressors in the

Last Saturday evening Ijite Shelby
and Theo. Cadle came in town having
caught him on the South fork ol the

around the mountains and was returning
to his home so he informed Mr. Shelby,
when that officer ran across him. lie
was taken before Recorder Bell, acting
justice of the peace last Monday on the
charge of murder.
Dr. H. P. Belknap and George Cline
returned last Thursday from Portland via
the Santiam route. Doc reports that the
only thing one can hear in the Willam
ette valley is something about their good

people and they are totally lacking in

are more campers in Sodaville than
there are in Waterloo. The reason for

of the people up there don't mend their

snch, we also hope that you will see the
folly of tearing down your neighbors to
make a foundation upon which to bnild
up a reputation for your own town. If
you want to build np your town do it in
an honorable, manly way. Remember
the good book says. "Ye that are inno
cent cast the first stone." You may
have more campers and belter sodawater
than we have but if you don't do better
in outing No. 5, we shall conclude that
you have cot got brains enoueh to run a

The Crops.
The warm, dry weather was of no in
jury, but on the other hand, was of great
oenent to tne bops. Hop lice thrive in
warm, moist weather and are ait'.ed by
hot dry weather, hence the great benefit
to the hops in the killing ot the '.ice.
The reports from the hopyards indicate
a great improvement in conditions and
prospects. The hop louse continues to
be very numerous, but at present uo
wholesale destruction is imminent.
The harvesting of fall and winter sown
grain continues. Threshing has com
menced in some localities. The excel
lent reports heretofore rnvle concerning
the fall and winter sown grain continue:
the yield, where threshed, is fuily en
average one and the berry is very plump
and heavy. Oats Is a very good heavy
crop, also. The warm weather is ripen
ing spring wheat and oat 9 very rapidly,
and they offer prospects for excellent re
turns. The fruit cop is one of the largest ever

Better than Kloiulyke.
From the Pendleton East Oregonian
Eighteen months ago a certain farmer
who trades in Pendleton. lost his land by
foreclosure of the mortgage upon it and
found himself with some farming ma
chinery, horsoa and wagons which he
knew hardly what to do with. The idea
occurred to him to rent some reserva
tion land and make one more attempt at
raising wheat, lie did so and at once
set to work to put about 2000 acres in
wheat the next fail. He seemed assist
ance fiom a friend who had more confi
dence In the farmer than the farmer h d
in himself. The land was thoroughly
worked and the wheat well put in. The
favorable season came and with it came
ft great crop and a great pr.ee. The re
sult, the farmer finds himself, after pay
ing all expense?, with wheat on hand
worth at leest z;i5,000. w ai m another
00 days he expects to have the wheat
sold and the sum named to his credit in
the bank, and if he should tet 75 cents a
bushel for it he will have $41,000 as the
profit of a year and a half of bar 1 work
But this is an exceptional year. Clon
dyke farming in Eastern Oregon dates
from lst)7. There are over one hundred
farmers in Umatilla county who have
cleared this Beacon from $7,000 to $35 -
000 raising wheat.

the functions given by the Zigzag club last
night in front of the white school house
four miles west of Albany on the Cor

The bicycle trip, with short stops for so

rays of tbe moon. At Mr. Sana Uour
leys big pitcher of fresh milk moistened
the conversation. The functions at the
school house consisted of zigzag remarks,
recitation, seasoned witicismsand an in
vitation to ice crean soda and ice. pre
sented under the direction of President
I Hopkins, around a flaming bon fire
hunt lor warmth, and a lunch 01 tanu-
wiches, apples, cheese, pickets, ginger
bread and ginger snaps with cool water
from the pump. The return trip was
aiade lingeringly with stops at romantic
placet for interchange of opinions, and
the party separated, seemingly with te-
grets, after a v;ry pleasant moonlight
experience.

Alter Hop Lice Red Hot.
Mr. U. W. Phillips, of Scio. was in the
city today. Mr Phillips has a big yard
of hops, which if saved, will mean $3,000
or $7,00i) in cash in his pockets, and
hence it is no wonder that he is after the
bop louse red hot. in fact he sava he is
sleeping only about 15 minutes day,
spending the rest of the time after the
pea.iveraus louse. His present program
is as foilows : He sprays the vines with
a solution of soap and petroleum, he al
so is sowing with a sower, slacked lime.

ber of our most prominent hop growers
are to the effect that most of the hop
lice have beendeatroyod and there is but
lime dancer of them doing any injury to
the hop crop in Lane county bnraying
has been resorted to in nearly all yards
under cultivation this year, and many
growers have gone through the spraying
process thoroughly three times, and
nearly every yard has been sprayed
twice. The prospects now are for a good
crop and a g-od price. Register.

weeks. When hot it does no injury, but
when cold, or lukewarm, aa it is most of
the time, this stagntnt dirty water doen
its work. The remedy suggested is the
changing pf the water every two or three
weeks, as well as other things that wilt! 1 r
