A Southern Paper's Opinion. Mr John Ball has been laughing in his sleeve for several days.v Lincoln, Neb., Nov. 6. Bryan today gave out the following :'. "To the bimetalists of -the United States: "Conscious that millions of loyal hearts are saddened by temporary de feat, I beg to offer a word of hope and encouragement. No cause ever had supporters more brave, earnest and de voted than those who have espoused the causa of bimetaliem . They have fought from conviction and have fought with all the seal conviction inspires. Events will prove whether they were right or wrong. Having done their duty as they saw it, they have nothing to regret. The republican candidate has been heralded as the advance agent of prosperity to the American people. It his policies bring real prosperity to the American people those who opposed him will share that prosperity. If on the other hand his policies prove an injury to the people generally, these supporters who do not belons to the office-holding class or to the privileged class will suffer in com- j mon with those who opposed him. Friends of bimetaliem have not been vanquished; they have been simply overcome. They believe the gold stan 3 ard is a conspiracy oLihe money chang ers against the welfare oE the human race, and until convicted of their error they will continue the warfare against it The contest has been waged this year under great embarrassments and against odds. But in Bpite of tbe efforts of the administration and its supporters, in spite of the threats of the money lenders at home and abroad, in spite of coercion practiced by corporations on employes, and in tpite of trusts and syndicates, in epite of the enormous republican cam paign fund, and in spite of the luflunces of a hostile daily press, bimetaliem has almost triumphed in its first great fight. But bimetaliem emerges from the con test stronger than it was four months ago. I desire to commend the work of the three national committees which bave joined in the management of this campaign. They have laid the found tion for future success and will be re- - membered as pioneers when tbe victory is-at last secured. No personal or po'.it ical Iriend need grieve because of my de feat.. "My ambition has been to secure im mediate legislation rather than to enjoy the lienors of offioe. Therefore defeat brings to me no personal feeling of loss. Speaking for the wife who shared my labors, as well as for myself. I desire to a ij that we have been amply repaid for all that we have done. In the love o millions of onr fellow citizens, so kindlyf expressed ; in tbe knowledge gained by pergonal contact with the people ; and in broadened sympathies we find full com pensation for what efforts we bave pnt forth. In the face of an enemy rejoicing ' in its victory let the roll be called for the engagement and urge all friends of bi- metalism to renew their allegiance to ti-e cause. If we are right, as I believe we are, we stall yet trinmph. The year of 1903 is not far away. Tbe Semi -Weekly Times Union, of Jacksonville, Fla., comes to the Demo crat office regularly and is a welcome visitor. It is a remarkably conservative paper, independent in politics. Among its interesting editorials is the following : Debt is more of a menace to future prosperity than a present evil. , While an individual or a community is going in debt it shows every sign ot extreme prosperitr. Pay-day', is forgotten, but it is coming with a stead; and fatal ap proach. . -" . . . , ,r. A panic is the legitimate offspring of flash times. - Unusual prosperity is ominous. Men forget, but it always is the harbinger of unusual stringency, in flush times it Is so easy to borrow money that men borrow beyond tbeir ability to pay... . ' The beet that can be said ot the South, and the trot that can be possibly said of any section or nation, is that it is com paratively free from booms and cal lap ses. Mo section in the Union is so little affected with the wild speculation of flush times as is the South, and none is so little injured by periods of unusual depression. The South is going steadily upward, and the fact that its progress is now so rapid is due to its past exemp tion from speculation and Its attendant evils. ... . - Ten years ago the West was a land ot promise. Cities sprang up almost in day. Great states grew out of a wilder nesa in a shorter time than It required a child to grow to mature manhood Money was plentiful. Those who did not have it could easily borrow it Tbey borrowed, and the result is the states the Northwest ara so heavily in deb1 that theit future is no longer one o promise. " ' On the other hand, the Sontbbaa gone quietly and steadily forward, and is now only slightly in debt. Aside from its comparative freedom from debt, its advantages are now recognised, and those who are looking tor homes have turned theit eyesaouihward. A development as solid as in the past and more rapid, is now setting in. The future of tbe South is bright, and its present condition, so tar as tbe maseea are concerned, is better than that of any other section of the country. Mr. M. L. Pipes is entitled to the ap pointment of minister to the Yukon. Oregon needs a registration Uw. The next legislature will please take note. Palmer received only 2,000 votes in Chicago, more than he was entitled to. The Palmer ticket was a mere decoy. When the smoke raise it will be seen that Mr. Carlisle does not get ny.hibg. 46,053 more votes were cast in Chicago than in New York. Now what does that settle." It is worse than foily to try to ignore it. .. Upon tbe eolation of this question de pends the future of cur republic, it will be, co doubt, s long struggle.
