Jacobs walked from bis homo In this citv to the west side of tho ferry. where he sot into a back, and with bis wife was taken to Walton's, about two miles la-yond, w here a daughter was lying seriously ill. Mr. Jacobs came to Oregon in the fiftics.at one time residing at Oakvillo, where be run a small ranch. He was in the tailor business on a small scale in Albany for a great many years. Mr. Jacobs was a man Highly respected for many good habits, lie was a mem ber of the Evangelical Church in good standing and lived a christian life. At the time of his death bo was between 80 and 86 years 0! age. Abockd tub City. A ride around Al bany reveals new bouses going up In all directions. There is a steady improve ment through the city that is very en couraging. Among other improvements is a large amount ol grading, inucn need ed in many places : but sometimes a rule might well tie winked at. tor instance, in the Third ward near the O 1 track the street is being excavated to place it on grade, making a regular Hole tn the ground, an unsightlr spectacle now whatever it will lie in the future. The well is about 40 feet deep. nd contains aliout five feet of water, strange to say the boy was un injured. Hon John Kellv furnishes the following census approxi mation of the counties of western Oregon : Lamb County seems to be having trou bio in settling with ex-Sheriff Sloan, and an investigating committee has been ap pointed. The Guard says : In tho year 188G ex-Sheriff Sloan assessed taxes to the amount of 97(1, and was charged with but S119 00. in 1887, amount assesseu.fl, 372 charged with (1)80.80. In 1888, assessed $1000, charged with $1,267.05. In 1889, assessed $4,690, with no charge against him. Total amount assessed. $8,041 Total amount chargedl$2,373.80; balance unreported, $6,687.20. It is stated that Mr Sloan should have credit for about $2200 for taxes sworn off and corrections made on the roll with which he baa not been credited. Bbtteh Still.
