A. T. would mildly inquire why such an enormous price is charged for grain bags this year. Evidently there is a syndi cate, or some other kind of a monstrosity, which proposes to cinch the farmers in the matter. I. ). ii T. Our Oregon Parlde Item, Tuesday afternoon the first piles were driven in the river for the O. Pv bridge, at this city. An insufficient number of piles has retarded work some on the bank. Grad ing is now being done this side of Thornton Lake, about a mile from Albany. Parts along the route though are yet to bs done. The grading will probably be completed to this city in about ten days. arrest accident. Last Monday Mr. Ubbe Peters was run ning a binder near this city when his team became frightened and ran away. The binder was broken nearly to pieces, the horses were badly hurt, and Mr. Peters was stirred up about as completely as i possible ..... m 4 without seriously injuring one. lie came to the city Tuesday, though, to make ar rangements to go on with his harvesting. 4 SamUaut Colt, Mr. Fran t Smith, of Santiam precinct, was In Albany, with one of. the prettiest colts we hive seen. On last Friday the first through car from the Atlantic drew up to Yaqulna on the Pacific Coast, after a trip across the North, ern part of the continent. Col. T. Edglnton Hogg, President of the Oregon Pacific, and J. J. Blair and Percy R. Plne.of the Chicago and North Western, were the principal pas sengers. After going to Tacoma from Port land they returned and went down the West Side Road to Corvallis, thence over the Oregon Pacific to the Bay. Tuesday Col. Hogg and party arrived in Albany, and after looking through the city, and at the O. P. work near here, started in carriage along the proposed route of the road towards the Mlnto Pom. They will also go to Fish Lake, return to Albany and thence go to Southern Oregon. The gen. tlemen with him, though little known to us arc railroad men of prominence In con nection w ith the road they represent Their wealth is counted by the million. Col. Hogghrings from the East reporl8 of Increased good prospects for the O. P. Four new steamer will he put on the route to San Francisco,one of which i on it way here. They will make the trip in hours. The road bed of the O. P. will be improved so an Increased speed of probably thirty-five mile an hour will be obtained. Several new engines have been added to the road's rolling stock.snd 100,000 tons of rails are on hand to use on the extension east ward. There is little doubt in the public mind now that the Willamette Valley and Coast R. R. is the Western division of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and Yaqulna City will be the terminous. This means a great deal to the people of the Valley ,and it affects Albany and Linn county particular ly. There is bound to grow up some time in the Valley south of Portland a city of commercial importance. It is the Dkmo chat's candid opinion it will be the city at the junction of the Oregon Pacific, 01 prop erly the W V St C R R, and the Oregon St California R R, in other word,Albany. While at the brewery, Mr. Faber being out of the bar room Ryan attempted to open the drawer ; but the alarm bell rang and Mr. Faber came into tne room to ana nyan gone j He issued a warrant for his arrest ; D B Montcith went after him and found him making tracks away from the city, being at the time of his arrest near Uucle George Hughes farm, beyond the Calfpooia bridge. He wa examined before George Humphrey, Esq., and held to await the action of the Grand Jury under $300 bond In default of bail, the prisoner is keeping Saunders and Jamison company in the county jail. Ryan was working for Clark Brothers in the capacity of mortar mixer, and was hardly thought to be of the till tapping character. Accident as Ifceslsl. Hiram, the fourteen year old son of R Farwell, of Shedd, met with quite an ac ctdent on last Saturday evening, lie was r w unharnessing a horse when the animal, which was a very fractious one, suddenly kicked him, breaking both bones of his right leg just above the ankle and other wise bruising hi face and body considerably. He was alone at the time, but his screams soon brought assistance, ur. uan, 01 Shedd was called, who set the broken limb, which at the present writing seems to be doing well. A Utile Ur Drwaed. Twelve year old Willie Reynolds, of Lebanon, was in bathing in the race that leads from the ditch to the mill at that place, last Sabbath, when he got into deep water, strangled and soon sunk out of sight. His companions, too young and frightened to do any anything themselves 1 rushed for assistance from a congregation of people performing the rites of baptism, not far away. Poor Willie was found in the bot tom of the race, dead. Every effort to resuscitate him failed. The deceased was the son of Mrs. Reynolds, a widow, Mme Homed. Last Monday night the house of Mr. James Hanlon, of Tangent was entirely consumed by fire, together with the furni ture, very ' little being saved. The citizens worked hard, without success to extinguish the flames. There was an Insurance of $400 on the house. Present Alt officers and Council men. Matter of filling holes on Third street was referred to Committee on Streets. The case of a wash house on First street where a nuisance was being committed was reported by the Marshal. It was ordered A ballot (or Councilman was taken, re sulting as follows : Marti 1 Payne, 3 ; W B Scott, 3. As the Mayor decided it re quired four votes to elect the matter' was laid on the table until the next meeting. A liquor license was granted J E Sorbin, his bond being duly approved. Grade stake were ordered set for new sidewalk along Block 30. The Recorder was directed to give notifi- cation for new sidewalk on street leading to Cemetery, and one east side Kerry, Third to Fourth street. Matter of appointing a night-watch for Third Ward was referred to Committee on Health and Police. The Kuss House was given the privilege of erecting a lamp post in front of the house, the proprietor to run it at his own expense. The matter of placing two lamps, to be taken from l lrst street, to 1 erry 1 Court House, was referred to Committc on Streets. President Thompson, of the Collegiate Institute, was in Albany Tuesday. From him we learned that the following will be the faculty in full for the coming year : Rev Thompson. President, and instructor in moral philosophy, mathematics and sci ences ; Wallace 11 Lee, a. h., instructor In the classics, English and German ; Mr T G Brownson. instructor in intermediate studies ; Miss Mary S Thompson, instruc tor in preparatory studies. Prof Lee grad uated from Williams College a tew years ago and has been principal of the Middle ton. fConn.l school for three years. He is a young man of fine ability ; Mis- Thomp son is a daughter of the President, and Mrs Brownson is already known as a good teacher, in connection with the Institute The faculty is a strong one . For its size we believe our College will have as good a faculty as any in the Northwest, if not the best. This fact should fill our school with ambitious students. I he young men and women of Oregon who desire good educa tions should take advantage of the splendid opportunity offered by an attendance at the Institute. Tinse Table Change, The West Side time table has been changed so that mail train leaves Portland at 7:30 a. m. and arrives at Corvallis at 12.15 p. m. It leaves Corvallis at 1 :30 p. m. and arrives at Portland at 6:15 p. m. thus con necting with the O. P. trains The express train leaves Portland at 4 :0 p. m., arrive at McMinnville at 8 p. m., leaves McMinn ville at 5 145 a. m., arrives at Portland 9 m. A Bay Sists Hart . Last Sunday Jos. Keebler, aged 13, and several .other boys, were running a flat car this side of Lebanon, when young Keebler fell in front of the car, which pass -ed over his body diagonally. He was quite seriously bruised, but fortunately no bones were broken. Good attention is bringing him out all right. WM. FORTMILLER nfiVESI ItlHM. A $100,000 fire occurred in La Grande on Thursday morning of last week. The fire caught in Jay Brooks genera! merchan dise store, and wa probably the work of an Incendiary. 31 person or firms lost by the fire. In 1873 Alfred Pacher killed four broth er miners in Colorado. In 1874 he wa ar rested for the crime ; but escaped and was not found until 1883. He has just been sentenced to hang. A $100 foot race wa run in Corvalli lat week between Long, of this county and Wilson, of Benton county. If any one can beat Corvalli sport on put ting up jobs thev have to get up early, It looks inconsistent for them to squeal if caught. Priueville was visited by a fire on the morning of August 2nd.
