Miss SalUs Morrison, In addressing our young Christian workers, indioatss, among other ways of wsrking, lending helping hand in ths grant work of Sabbath onset vanos. Gigentio and ominous is this great aril of Sabbath dsssoration in our land, scarcely less alarming in its proportions than ths kindred srU of intemperance. Indeed, the two go hand in hand. Could wo oloso tho saloons and nltoes of amuse ment on the Lord's Day, snd open ths sanctuaries wids for all to enter, othsr errors would in time be righted. Pub. lio sentiment, as a general thing, fails to sp precis Is the needfulness of effort in the latter direction. Private indi viduals and publio corporations alike violate the ssnctity of this sacred day of rest.seomingly with impunity. What eau we young people do toward creating a eorreot public sentiment in fsvor of strict and conscientious Sabbath sbeerv anos ? One thing Is very sure, and that is that auoh a scrupulous observance U essential to our prosperity as a nation. No less jealous than of yore, is our God In regard to tbe sanctifioation of this holy test day. Instituted amid Edenio purity, and sanctioned by Divine ex ample and precept, in later days re consecrated with resurrection power and Pentecostal grace, tbe Sabbath was in tended SI permanent institution,adapt- ed (or all doodIo and for all time. Once 8) SJ his own chosen people of Israel 'beloved for the Father's sake," tempted Him with tbe double transgression of idola try and Sabbath breaking I And Oh 1 hew sevsre wss thsir punishment for this infringement of Divine lew. Ssv snty years of lonely exile in tbs Isnd of ths straager, taught thsm, in a wsy they could never afterward forget, that the asnottfied Sabbaths of Jehovah were to be preserved inviolate. That expe rience of sorrow photographed on their soals for al) time tbe imperative precept of their covenant God, "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." Shell our nation wait to be instruct ed by a similar discipline 1 The Lehigh Tel ley line has earned tbe oommeedatiea of the - travelling publio and established a praiseworthy praosdsnt fur all othsr railway lines ths past summer, by giving strict orders to all conductors of passenger trains to ess thst tobacco la "not used in any form by any person employed upon a peaces gar train while on duty." This lins likewise forbids intoxicating liquors to its employees. In forbiddiog also the nse of tobacco they add materially to the comfort of their passengers, thus relieved from contact with train hands constantly chewing tobacco or offensive ly odorous from smoking a pipe or a cigar at every available opportunity. May their good example be followed by others in both railway aad steamboat management. The saloon liquor t raffle is severely denounced, and justly so, at highly In imical to tbe pobUe welfare. Relative ly too little attention, however, s gives to tbe irreparable injury done in many a home by the sale of intoxicating li floors by grocers. At the recent annual meeting of the Philadelphia County Woman's Christian Temperance Union a revolution wss adopted declaring "That as membera of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, we wil withdraw our patronage from ail grocers who deal in liquor." If the members of all temperance organizations every wbsrs would "go and do likewise," much good would follow in tbe wey of needed restraint upon liquor selling gvooers. In Burlington, N. J., after an earn est effort on tbs part of the W. C. T. U., all the druggists save two, (one Mr. I. W. Dayis. unconditionally, and three on condition that all the druggists of ths city enter into tbe egrsement,) signed ths following ; "Ws, ths undsrsigned druggists, do ing business in the city of Burlington, N. J., do hereby sgreo thst ws will not, under any consideration, sell or dis pense any intoxicating liquors to mio ore, and to no one unless fully assured that it is for medicinal purposes only. "Dated Burlington.N. J,, September 2nd, 1885. Jobh W. Davis, H. B. Spaceman, H. B. Weaver, J. A. VslKDEOllFT." Great indignation waa expressed by the citizens snd local press against the two druggists who refused to sign, and it was honed that a favorable result might be reached with the whole num bar. $5 ,000 worth of clothing at cost at Mon teith Sl Seitenbech's. An eight-year-old lad sobbed at the Too m be yesterday. "Been stealing barrels, oh?" said Justice Duffy. "Don't you know that'i wrong? What were you going to do with thorn?" "Make fires on election night." "Mo and bis gang have over forty boxes and barrels stored In a cellar in Greenwich street," said the officer who made the arrest. "Is your name Mr. Duffy?" sud denly asked the led of the Justice. "Yea;my lad, it Is. fWhat of It?" "Papa knows you then," he replied eagerly. "He patted me on tho head when I told him how many barrels I had last night and said to mamma: My friend Judge Duffy tud I bad the biggest fire election night In the First Ward thirty-five years ago.' " The lad walked triumphantly out of court. World. The Republicans are again threat ening the President with ths reject- Ion of bis appointees by the Senate. Suppose they do Inaugurate so ob structive policy ; what good will It do thsm? Tbe suspension of their officials made during recess holds good until the end ef tbe next session of the Senate ; then another recess comes and the President cau make another appointment. Obstructive tactic', therefore will not avail tbe Republican Senators anything. They cannot restore their partisans to office by any such course. The President is responsible for tbe conduct of offi cials he appoints, or who are In the offices filled by executive appointment And lie has a moral right to aay who they shall be. This right, It Is alto gether likely, the Republican Sena tors will recognize. Republican papers are speaking In strong terms condemning tbe sugges tion that democrats might not attend the meeting of tho legislature, or might resign and break a quorum and thus prevent the election of a V. 8. Senator. These republican lead ers eeem to have forgotten that their members In tbe legislature In J8G8 entered Into a conspiracy with Woods, who was then governor, by which the legislature waa broken up. That fias co oo tbe part of the republicans cost the state $80,000, end at tbe next election the people put the seal of condemnation by electing the entire democratic state ticket, end return- log a large majority to each house of the legislature. Democrats can gain nothing for the party by permanent absence or resignation. Lot them stand to their post of duty. a amwmmwmmmmmmmmmmmmmi MWSSBBJSwOT"inianiiawain Republican newspapers are distressed because Lieut, Green, tbe officer of Marines who captured old "Osmws tomie" Brown at Harper's Ferry, has been given a small Federal office. And yet the Republicans of tho whole coun try have keen trying to elect to the Gev ernorsbip of Virginia tbe son of tbe man who caused Mr. Brown to be executed -who might with one at r ok a of his pen have saved bis life. And this eon was a Confederate soldier, too, snd if he could have bad his wsy would have bad the hero of Harper's Fsrry gibbeted and left at the cross roads for vultures to feed on.
