the governor in convening the legisla
ture in extraordinary session, done de

First, There is no suoh extraordi
nary occssiou as is con tent pitted by the
constitution Justifying) or in any other
way excusing, this proclamation, end we
denounce the same as a flagrant end op
pressive abuse of nuelio office in tbe
Interest of a mere political party.
Second. We declare to the electors
of this state that the burden of taxation
naceasary to meet the expense of this
special sessson has been brought upon
us bv tbe clamor of tbe republican lead
era and the weakness of the executive
in issuing this call ; and ws therefore
aak that the republican party in this
state, thus jointly responsible, be held
to a strict account before tha oturt of
last resort the people.
Third. This extraordinary state ef
public affairs, demands at tbe hands ef
our representatives in the two house,
aa leaders of the party, such wise and
thoughtful action at shall prater vt and
strengthen in the state our party organ
ization. Wo do not regard it as pro
erly within our province te make or of

the people themselves should now be

to settle the senatorial question next

The excitement In Washington ter
ritory, and especially in Seattle and
Tac urn, over tho Chinese-must-go
question has been running very high
for a week- Tbe people of Tacoma
almost unanimously warned the Chi
nese that they mast leave tbat town
and they stood mt upon the order of
their going, and t.'ten ateps were
taken at Seattle to pursue the same
courts when the Governor of the
Territory called upon the president
for a military force to suppress any oat
break which might result from tbe
excited state of public feeling of hos
tility against the Chinese. The pres
ident issued his proclamation calling
out the military and three hundred
soldiers were sent to Seattle and now
all seems to be quiet. While we are
free to sty that it is desirable that by
tome means the people should be rid
of this incubus upon tbe progress of
the country, the intelligent law-abiding
portion of the country wfll not
support nor sustain the effort to drive
them out by mob law. Tbe power ef
tbe general government is pledged,
in her treaty relations with China, to
protect the Chinese who are lawfully
here, and all effbr s to drive them
out in the face of this pledge will
prove a farce. Lot us educate the
people up to that point where those
in authority will be compelled to ask
a modification of our treaty relations
with China on this subject Then,and
not till then, may we hope tor relief
from the Mongolian curse.
It is a very common remark among
republicans that Cleveland is better
than his party. Very well, if this be
true, it tpetkt in tbe highest termt of
the r isdom, prudence tnd good mtntge
ment of the democratic party in putting
forward ita very best man for office.
We express, very freely, our unqualifi
ed conviction that this remark may not
tlwayt be nude about men wbe are
often called to important stations ia
government by the republicans. We
do not believe, far instance, that Blaine
it belter, or even ts good as hit party.

of wV&t it claims to be.
During the election last week in
Baltimore a negro was shot and killed
for soliciting another negro to vote
the democratic ticket. The person
who did the shooting Is one of John
ShcrmanS men who want "a free bal
lot and n f.iir count."
According to the New York Sun
and World, betting on the New York
election on the night before the elec
tion, run down to $1000 to $900 in
favor of Hill, and yet the dispatcher
said the odds were In favor of Daven
port. You fee these dispatches are
very unfair.
Strsngp, isn't it, that tne name of
Mitchell should be heard in the land
so oft. n, in connection with the aen
atorshlp, and the Qregonian remain
as silent the tombs about those "over
whelming proofs of unfitness not yet
submitted to the public." Come, let

called attention to the fact that the as
sociated press dispatches, when relating

be looked upon with a degree of
allowance, because, at we alleged, they

steadfastly denied this bitt. But this

of tbe New York campaign. Under
date of Sept. 28th a diipetoh wtt sent
throughout the country saying that R.
P. Flower wts predicting tbe election
of the republican state tioket by 40,000
majority. It wts intended te create
the impression that Flowsr wtt sulking
and would not help the democrtt,while
in truth and in fast, at thtt very vims he
contributed $15,000 te pty the expen
aea of the democratic earn Da Urn. Then
en the same date the dispatches gravely
informed tit that the Germeus would
not support Hill. But the New York
papers published at the very time this
ttttement was mtds showed thtt the
German democrats were rigorously sup
porting Hill. Then under date of Sep.
29 we were told in a long dispatch hew
notoriously unpopular Hill was while
Davenport was said to be popular with
every body. But the outcome showed
that Hill was moderately popular! and
that all of Davenport's popularity could
not says him from defeat. Under date
of Oct. ltt, the ditpttches told how the
Time and Tribune were on the trail of
Hill, which, though doubtless true.'wss
o more than the Sun and World were
doing with Davenport, hot theee dis
patches said nothing about whtt the
Sun, World and Star wore doiag with
reference to the record and oharaoter ef
Davenport, and herein the partisan
oharaoter of the dispatches were fully
thown. Under date of Oct. 7th, we
were told how Hill was handicapped by
his alleged connection with Tweed and
the character of Jonee who wat oa bit
tioket for Lieutenant Governor, while
all thia time every thing that waa said
with reference to Davenport waa calcu
lated to build kin np in the estimation
of the votera of New York. And on
this same date we were told that Hill
was not tbe cboioe of any of the factions
of the democratic party ia tbe city,
while at the pells these factions gave
him ever 3000 greater majority than
they gave Cleveland. Coming down to
Oct. 29, the dispatches tell us that bet
ting was $100 te $60 on Davenport but
New York papers published at the
time do not bear out tbe atatement,but
en the contrary, the daily Sun and daily
World both claimed at that time in lan
guage mistakably earneet that tbe tlem
ocrtti would carry tbe atate by good
round majorities.
Our readera have not forgotten the
associated press dispatch published in
tbe Oregonian under date of Njv. 2nd,
in which we were told that there waa
was not tbe slightest doabt about tbe
election of Davenport. We were told
that a big vtoe in tbe eity meant a big
republican vote hot ts a matter of truth the
big vote thowed an increased democrat
ic majority. We were told that three
fourtha of tbelriah who voted for Blaine
would vote for Davenport and many
other things calculated to inapire men
with a feeling of certainty that Devon
port would be elected, and tbe dispatch
bad that affect, but the result of tbe elect
ion showt that the dispatch wts high
ly impregntted with partisan bias.

one, Alfred P. Edgerton of Indiana, in
place of Dormon B. Eaton, and the
other Wm. J. Trenholm of Charleston,
S. C. in place of John M. Gregory.

tions twitted the democrats about how
overwhelmingly the republican would
sit down on tbe democrats in that state,

who have a full stock of assurance on
hand, baoked by poor judgment, are as-
sorting that Mitchell, to the ooming
Senatorial contest, will be elected by

will furnish some of those votes. This

well to remind them tbtt Linn county
chose her legislators from representative
Democrats ; men tbtt know from what
source their support at the pells oame,
tnd men of braiat enough to foresee
the situation they will be placed in,
abould tbey even intimate an intention
of voting for Mitchell. His proclivities
are of the deepest Republican hue, and
if they otn't afford to have htm with
bit rtilroad record, monopoly record
how can the Democratic party afford to
support him. It has been ttiJ thtt if
the contest comes between Williams,
Hiraoh and Mitchell, the Democrats
will fall in line and elect the latter,as a
policy stroke. That would be the
sheerest nonsense. Any Democrat from
this county ,(andl think from any other
county,) that assists in the election of
Mitchell will sign his political death
warrant the moment he casts tbs vote.
They were not elected to pool issues
with Republicans, and especially in the
election of tbe most objectionable one.
Linn county furnished an example of a
Democrat assisting in the election of a
Republican many years ago, when he
voted for Baker, and those who know,
(tod Linn county represented roe do
know,) wbst hat been bit subsequent
standing politically will flee from tucb

agent of sheol. If a petition should be
circulated in Linn county, taking Dam
ocrata to inttruct their representatives
to vote far Mitchell, it it not certain

crats of lets prominence in the entire

At the sale of the late Mr. Sarah
Hale, last Saturday, among other
things, two yearling colts were sold
