Paxton laat week sold hU art gal lery, good will, etc., in tula city to J G and Orvllle Crawford, and these gentlemen will take possession of the gallery about September Is . Mr J U Crawfbrd has operated a gallery at Harrtsburg for sev eral years, where he has obtained an ex cellent reputation aa an artist. Saturday Mr Paxton showed us a couple high wa ter pictures whinh were taken by htm in 1801, ftpeaktng very forcibly of the length of time he has been in Albany, and how thoroughly Identitfed he has become with the growth of the city. According te the picture all the buildiugs were then wood en ones, the stores only extending from Ferry to Broadalbin Street. On the north between Broadalbln and Ellsworth were teo or three small residences, while the other side of the street was vscaa;. Op posite the present Foster Block, occupied by a hotel and several stores, on and near the side walk, were f ur or five men, among others being Mr V R Cannon, in s stove pipe hat sod wearing, if we are not mistaken, the identical ope overcoat which he wears at the present time In wintry weather. Beside him wss Mr Mack, and near by a Mr. Davis The street was full of wster frm the Willam ette, reaching to tho present French cor ner. To ( eld settlers particularly this would he a very interesting photograph. To new corner it exhibits wbt Albsny once wss. Mr Paxton has now beon the sole photographer here, with slight ex ceptions, for twenty-five veers, until now he ban customers from all parts of the valley. He has no superiors as a photo grapher in Oregon. It will be with re grets that we see him leave Albsny. Eaormoa. Pis Ust Friday Mr C S Smith, of Peoria. brought to the Democrat office a box of plums, which, for si.-, as well as quality, it is impos-ible to surpass. There was one layer in the box, 8.U13 aches iu dimension, and only twenty- qne. closely packed, in number. They averaged about 7x8 inches in circum ference, being a large as giant hens eggs. The variety is the Ponds seed ling, a kind introduced by the Tangent rsursertes. We are anxious Tor some reader of the Democrat to bring us a box of the size mentioned containing a le-s number of jlosely packed plums than in the box brought us by cur genial friend, mentioned above. ,,. 'Sheet Iron" has been in close conbnemnt several months, and may rejoice that he only has about two months more to remain in the jail here. He has beoa amply punished for bis 1 ttle set of indiscretion, and it is cer tainly to be regretted that this soaring geu las, for "Sheet Iron" i a genius in bis way, should be longer kept in restraint, with a prospect, too.for a longer confinement, unless there is a failure to prosecute. tta a rasaeas Bret her. Ap preciating the fact that we enjoy the sweets )f Ufa whfeu we can get thorn, last Wednes day he brought to our cilice a large platter of honey, unexcelled for flavor and purity, aod we feel encoursged to proceed with our work of giving the people of Linn county all of the news of the week at ?2 60 a year. N tries will not bd given wb:re so requested. Older Vet. Bjluce our last ie?ue sfe have learned of a native Linn county born gentle man, older even than Mr. Geo. Hughes Mr William II. Klura, of Lebauou. now working ou the Central School build ing, in this city, was born iu this coun ty April 26, 184S, now being over 36 years of age Xoyto tobxe so as Multwaiu's. argter. On last Thursday evening, Mr Ueorge Patterson and wife went to the dep t to meet s friend whom they expected to ar rive on the train. When they returned home thoy saw a man atandtng near the walk that runs along on the south side of hid premise.. The man asked tha dlreo tlon to the business part of the city and if there were any hotels, Oeorgn thought nothing more about the stranger until morning when he srose, but oould not find his pants where ha had left them the night bclore, He weut Into the parlor and found them on the tloor. Tho pock eta had been searched and two ten cent pieces and a plug of tobacco had been taken, but the thief left two pen knives and a match box which were iu the pock, et. When Mr. Patterson went to bed ho took out hi purse mtaining U0 and put it under his head, which luckily saved It, The thef after rifiing the pants pocket, picked up Mr Patterson's vest trom which ho took a fa silver wstch. Mr Patterson has no doubt that the man he saw by tho walk in tbe evening was tha thief. I Mi tleeat. ltocenl'y Prof. Wyokoff, of this city, and several others, attempted an asoent of Mt. Hood, but they met too many fissures to make It successful. When they turned back the top looked uearly as far off a when they started. Their trip as far as It extended w a most interesting one. Tho Prof has shown us several scenes taken by an Eat Portland photographer of part of the mountain which ho visited, which a.-e of themsoivo mi a-tourance of thnt fact. Ml. The Alps have besn sca'.e I and why j t Mt, Hood, a Big Oregon Nunr Uare. On Monday. August 31st, at City View Park, Portland, the biggiat trotting race iu the history of Oregon will take place. It will be between one ot the got ef Altamout and one ef the get of llambletotilan Membriuo, the hordes to be named not later than 8 p. m on the day previous to the race. The race will be for $2.VK) a side. Jay Reach backing the Altamout stock and L, I. Idndsey the Hambletotilari Membriuo slock. Mclvntght I'ro'a Qneco is now at Beach's farm aud if he can be brought down to business by August 31st, which is doubtful, as he has just finished a season, be will no doubt be entered, & be is without question, when iu train ing, the fastest of Altament's offspring. The race will be "for blood,'' and will be watched with great intercut by all horsemen of Oregon. Be Hops are an enigma, and a "ard one too. This is peculiarly true this year, Tbe raisers of tin county have been in a great quandary to decide whether they will even pick or not, Mr Samuel Ternphtoa, of Orownsville stated in this oity Tuesday that he sod his brother would not touch their field, and he knew of only one person around Brownsville who would piok, and that waa Mr William Smith, who proposed to do so whatever the uonas- qoenoes. Aotwittutan ling many will not pick, Chinamen have offer! to do it for 25 cents, and 15 cents a pound hxve been offer ed for the firat hops. Out first hop prices are very uncertain, and Linn county raisers have iearne j that they ar liable m till so it t as to bw almost unsetiu. Besides hops have to be of an extra quality , and it is true that a few fields were slightly damaged by tbe con tinued dry spell in this county. The present depressed condiuoa of the market is liable to knock this important industry ompleUdy in j pa i,ea.l in Liuo county, SteaxBi ea Malar), "Curse the smoke, anyway," some one say on every comer, as be cuts a chunk oft with bis knife. It does make matters look gloomy. It is said to be a fact, though, one which not many appreciate, thst tbe ''pesky" smoke is a genuine "Rough on Malaria," Several cases have been, reported where tho smke spread itself over the valley during the preval ence of milaria, and, In two or three days bad done more than a cir load of pills oould have dono towards exterlmatiug malarious diseases. If this is true, and there is reason to believe it la, we should accept the present vauey or smoke as a Godsead and not find fault at its pros ence. "Tbere is som soul o( goodness 04 ttpDfs svip Would men observlmfiy dUU.! '.I out.4 vtbhasmmurs , A Hems ratable la ,c A very curious and remarkably lonely case occurred iu this city recently. A tramp, or apparently one, aboqt three weeks ago tqld a gentleman lu a First street store, that he was hungry, had not had anything to eat for tho conventional length of time, and askod if be would get him his supper. This the gentleman did, paying two bits for the same. Last week tho gentleman was approached by tbe same man, who banded him a (our bit piece, said that v,as yhat he owed him., and then rushed off before the gentleman bad time to make change, The mau'u tanned face told how he had been doing something with his muscies in the harvest field. Probably a like case will never again bo reportod in the annals of Linn county. Evergreen ItlHet- Uuc'.e Qeorge Hughes left a sample of what 1? known as evergreen millet at this office, the seed of which ho obtain ed at San Francisco It is said that a ton of hay from this millet is worth a ton and a naif of titqotby lay. &f r tjughes owed a few seeds only last year and will save all his seed this year so that he can put it to a thorough test, The sample left here waa eigttt tcet tall. It Is aaid three crops nan bo mowed in one season, it win evidently do wen here. beat Vet. Thomas Alpbin, the old pioneer, sowed one acre of Russian oats, (the seed of which be received through this office, ) from which he threshed 3030 pouuds, or 84 bushels. This will leave him only about $2,000,000 to retire on, He has the Democrat's heartfelt sympathy. We would like to fall that way. Walla Walla had a $25,000 fire last Fi t day, all from an upset lamp, A Milwaukee father with nine children has a bedstead twenty-four feet wide, divided Into nltn imptrt nsnt, on for each child, That is genuine economy. Holding tbe wrlat under a stream of cold water, or In a pall of it, will "coo! one" oft better than to drink a hogshead of water or beer. The late Charles O'Conor, pel haps the mom profound lawyer New York City has produced, gave a piece of advice to a young man which la as valuable as any legal opinion for which the distinguished lawyer ever received a fee A lad wrote to him giving a long list of hooka which ho had already gene through, and aaklug advice aa to a course of reading. Mr. O'Conor replied that "ho not only had not rend, but had not known even by name, oue-: alf of the books bla correspondent appeared to have read He would not, therefore, undertake to advise hlut, what to road, but he oould safely advise him to read loss, and think more," The city tax in Now York city is placed at 21 nulla. Several are even being arranged in civilised Oregon. Iu Braidwood, Illinois, last Monday two men, named Patterson aud Mulvoy, fought 13S rounds, Malvey coming out on top. It was a delightful (?) sight whvn the 13th round was called to see Pat tersou's assistants lift him to his feet, when he tumbled over from exhaustion. The papers are wondering what Butler will do. No doubt this will depend on tho number of spoons lying around. A 4 omblned Marblae There have been two men In tbe city this week selling a machine which they recommend to do nearly everything but preach a sermon, and if the stories told about it m are true they will do that be fore the purchasers get through with them. They are like unto a glass jar.have a tiu top with a bole In It, aud a dasher inside of them. Tbe glass has graduated scales and it iaolaimed will meanira any thing from Hour to medicine. The ma chine, the mon say, will f:oeae ice cream in live to teu minutes anu win beat egg with deapeteh, besides various other things. In Ita issue of August 3rd, the "Oregoutan" gave an account of how tw women purchased such machine, per haps from these same men as they have told about selling a large number there Th. y tried to make ice cream. Instead of eight minutes It took them two hours, and then the cream was fro sen i the daher snd they had to ma t it in order to get at it. Then they tried heating eggs. The ejrgss'l stuck to the dasher sad they had a Jab getting them on", An examination re veaieu me tart tnv. me measures were not correct, Tkcu one of the women threw hers over tbe bank feuce, and the other put up preserves In her freezer. This is the "OregouianV account of a machlus that Is describe i just like the one being sold here. Perhsps that pajier t retched matters ; It sometimes does. The machine may be the best thing in the world ; but in any event It Is well tor people to know what they are buying, for fourteen bit piece do not grow in every man's garden. IS ' feres lag 1 ; K Hammjck's orew on last Tuesday had run 21 days and threshed over 23,000 buib els of grain, an average of about 1217 bushels a day. I arm lime Burglarised - On Thursdsy morning of last week, Mrs Henry Freekson and son, living about three miles south of Albany on tho Tan gent road, came to Albany to tbe circus, Mr Freekon was away with his thresh ing orew at the tltno. On going home In the evening Mrs, Freekson found on en -tering the liouso, that there had been un welcome visitors present during her ab sence, Beds were torn open, trunks were rid of their contents and things quite generally presented a chaotic appearance. It was asoertalnod then and after the re -turn of Mr Freoksoit Sunday that a suit of clothe-i belonging In purls, to Mr. Freek son and a hired man, a hat and pair of suspenders belonging to Mr. Frekson's son, two revolvers, seven and fjVo barrel-, ed, one pocket looking glass, two oom.bg, one but tin of (saiagQi, three silk and threo white handkerohlofa, one ran or, two pies, a large dish of cake, a pan of milk and several oilier things had been taken, Quito a sum of money belonging to Mr. Freekson and some of his help, which was concealed, was not disoivored. As Mr, Freekson was rupnlng a threshing orew It amounted to oonsiderablo. How many burglars thero were couid not be told for certain, but the amount of pie and cake eaten and milk drank, indicated that it must have been several. As all of the doors were found locked and the windows fastened down, just as they were left on Thursday morning, it is plain that the bouse was entered by tbe aid of a key, Thore is little clue as to who the parties were. Thoy may have been tramns. and thoy may have been persons who knew about there being money in the house. Some things indloate tbe latter. Mr, Freekson Is anxious to recover heme of the proporty, the razor particularly, It be ing a present from his father and highly valued. He will give a liberal reward for a clue to the burglars.
