SPAULDING Enily Oregon 31 IsslouHTlicIr Im portance In Securing the I'omn try to Aniorcimi. NVMRER TWENTY'S! X. We left Koise August 21st, ami rc Qrossed Snake river at the Islam! in like manner as we tlitl above, except jur ladies, one at n time, were taken over on three small bundles of bull rushes lashed together an Indian swimming before with a light cord in his mouth, Jthe other end attached to tVs w3Ioses ark of bull-rushes. It reqmrcd a strong nerve and slow breath, or -this bunch of ''feathers" would shoot from under them. " I have before said that Fort Boise is J, 103 feet 'above the sea; but Snake river, where we left it, is 1,800. (These measurements, as before stated, are Fremont's.) We passed through a rough country, but well stocked with grass, which served our animals. We reached Powder river Aug. 28, in a starving condition; and the greater portion of the company push ed ahead with the stronger animals to obtain food for themselves a.nd to send back. .Mrs. Spalding ainl myself, three Canadians and the Indians re--mained behind with our cattle and weaker animals, ta spend the Sabbuth. Providentially the Indians got hold of sorao poor salmon in Powder river and several prairie cocks a fowl be tween the turkey and common hen, the male crowing in the morning like our chickens. TIJs was a Clod-send to us. The sight of Grand Rondo filled us with transports of joy. We had seen nothing like it hi nee low down on Platte. A charming meadow of yt, miles in circuit, mountains of easy slope on all sides, low down; name descriptive of its shape; beautiful streams, skirted with balm, flowing through it and uniting in a considera ble river, called by the natives .'Walua," 2,000 feet above the sea. In the Blue 3Iountains the Indians were successful in shooting a deer, which we received with thankful hearts. The timber of the Blue Mountains (name derived from the blue appear ance of their thick timber at a dis tance) is red and white rir, hemlock, tamarack, yellow and spruce vipo, two kind s of white plae, white vedar, balm, white and vine maple, birch, cherry, serviceberry, Iiaekberrr, alder, goose- berrv, currant, willow and aspin. The f umoer is oi navy growin, some oi the pine and fie. being 20 feet in cir cumference; s,ane of-he beautiful, majestic larch (tamarack) grew 200 feet high 100 feet without a limb, and straight as an arrow. The highest divide in the Blue 3Iountains over, which the route passes, according to Xrremort, is 5,000 feet above the sea Jsaine elevation of Bear river at Soda Fountain, ami only 500 feet higher than Fort Hall and" Fort Laramie. We had now fairly entered a new part of the world, reminding us of the far-away timbered countries of our childhood. For four long months we had been traveling over the barren plains and internal mountains of the great interior of Xorth America. The striking feature of this great and ter rible wilderness is everywhere the lack of timber. In some districts we saw not even a willow switch for days. Our dependence for camp fires was often sagebrush or buffalo manure. . On the 31st of August we emerged from the Blue 3Iountains upon an open divide and the great basin of middle Columbia and much of what is now Washington Territory burst upon our view. 'Mount Washington (Hood), with his crown of glory, sup porting the cloud?, rose majesti 1&0 miles to the west ; and by the help of the glass other white peaks, like clouds, could be seen in the northwest. How unlik are the two great divisions of our country divided by the Kocky Mountains. In the Atlantic tdtes and in the great basin of the Missis sippi the observer may travel for miles without coming in sjght of snow cap-, ped mountains. But on the Pacific slope, from the ridge of the JRocky Moun tains to the ocean's wave, from almost every high point may 16 seen white peaks glistening in the sunbeams the year round Another rf markable, difference should le noticed- East of the 3Iountains the soil grows richer to the very wa ter's t d''c, through the vast waters, of the Mississippi, Ohio, Susouehannah, and all the great rivers, while the soil upon the mountains is barren. But on the Pacific slope it is the reverse. The good goil is found in the moun tains and their base and in scroll iso lated patches upon a few "of the'small er sUeanis, while the great basins of the ly? wis, Columbia, Colorado, Iluin bolt, and all the principal rivers, are vast uninhabitable, untimbered deserts of wormwood and broiling sand or lava to water's edgeV The country west of the Cascades is an , exception to this, " . ' . -"From our charming standpoint the Indians could point out to us the bluffs of the far-away Columbia river, and a A prominent landmark near the long jooked for Fort Walla Walla. The cene was grand and inspiring. The country was altogether a different one from scorching deserts we had been t raveling through for months. Our 'hopes were strengthened. Surely .such' a country could afford favorable locations ' We were told by the In dians that the country held the' same eharat ief far a way to the east and into the-country, of the 2sez Perce?. It was a fiY occasion to sing the hymn found in the Wesleyan coUectibn'page 368 We had arriveL jhcre , , . ... , "gtreams from forest fountains ' . Flovi -Kstlo ocean's bed.", -. r , ; ... . ' . -We ,43 ad come to meet the nation whose ambassadors to St. Louis years -befgre had ask-d : .' "Hare yoa tliat Book from Heaven? - To us shallit be given ?" v and men to teach it? which was the occasion of the hymn ; al.co tho then future destiny of our mortal lives, as also the fate of this Great Pacific West. ' ' . Bowing our knoea upon this "God's high mountain," my angel wife, with an overflowing heart," returned pro found thanks to God for His wonder ful care over her, hi bringing her, com trary to every human prediction, through broad deserts- and the toil some, hazardous journeyings of seven lout months ; for His constantly pro viding baud and oft-repeated deliver aneo when in .'manifold perils; and now He had brought her over the last chain of mountains, and her eye actu ally rested unou the country some where in which she would seek a home for life, where to point the red man in that "Book from Heaven" to the Lamb of God who had also died for him. That evening, as we were about to ennm on the Umatilla, an express from the Fort met us with sea-bread and other food, and the relish with which we surveyed our supper that night can be realized by those only who have been compelled to do without bread for months, and live on game ami some of .the! time wn a scant allowance of the poorest of butValo meat. Passing through the beautiful plains between tho Umatilla and. the Walla Walla rivers, we met with vast bands of horses belonging to the Cay use ami Walla Walla Judians. ontitues 1,000 in a herd would be lingering around the living springs of water, rolling fat and of all colors. In a very few years these great bands of horses were joined upon the endless prairies with smajl herds cattle. But where are those numerous bands of cattle and those horse now? and where the nations that owned them ? Where ? For eleven year.s the martyr Whitman, with his heroic wife, was theix devoted and successful teaeha'r, causing their ever before uncultivated country to bud and blossom with fields of wheat Mid corn, with orchards, herds, mills, schools, happiness and plenty. Bui another set of religion ists came, anTl, taking advantage of a fell disease, and with the aid of im ported ageits, persuaded the simple hearted Cayu'C to destroy their Amer ican teacher and the Americans on this eoat, and to accept their "holy tobacco," their, beads and. themselves xs the only teachers to lead them in the "str-iight road" to heaven. They listened the tomahawk was buried in their" teacher's head. Their "father" and their best friend fell. His devo ted wife follovred that night, the cold earth her dying pillow, the cold earth her dying curtains, her own blood her winding-sheet. The Americans at the post were butchered for eight days, their wives and daughters made eaj tives and subjected to brutality worse than death; their new teachers riding among them to encourage them. Xor did they stop to wait till the last American was butchered, ami even be fore the slain bodies were buried, did these new teachers commence their holy missionary (!) work by baptizing their new blood-stained converts, tom ahawk in hand ! The last Protestant Mission, the last American settlement east of the Cascades was broken up and the last American driven from the country. And but for the Protestant "ez Perces Indians, who took their lives into their hands, the last Ameri can family in the Willamette Valley would have been butchered. But where are those tomahawk teachers to-day? and where that once wealthy Cayuse nation,' and where their great berds of beautiful horses, and where their iKiautiful country ? The deluded Cayuse nation are gone ; their bands of horses are gone ; their much-loved country the home and buryground of their fathers for ages unknown is in the hands of another race, even the fame Americans they were put up to exterminate. And these new teachers : Oh, Ye heavens abor2 shroud, your blue canopy in darkneis, and yoa earth beneath with hold your strength from these hypo critical monsters ! To-day they are clothed iji silk and rolling in wealth through the rich' prairies of the lost countries of their deceived victims. They own rich homes the choice" se lections in all that vast country to the Kocky 31ountains; and even during the twelve years the American Mis sionary was forbid by Government to abide in that country east of the Cas cades, these black-robed tomahawk teachers were selecting choice homes (so-called mission stations) all through that country, having reference to fur ther settlements and probable gold mines, unmolested by the Indians and unrebuked by the same Government which' refused to let its own American missionaries go into that same coun try. . - Stemming Gooseberries. Take one pint of the berries and put them into a fine sieve, such as is used for sifting meal; rub them' with the palm of your hand around tlje sieve very briskly for two or three minutes. This will take the stems off, unless the berries are wet with raiu or dew. OUK AGENTS.
