San Francisco Legal Tender rates 71(52 New York Gold Quotations Subscribers finding an X marked oa tho margin of their paper, will understand that tho time for which they hare paid for tho DsMocnAT has expired, and will govern themselves accord ingly. Mrs. Stowe. According to previous no tice, Mrs. C, Stowe, a clairvoyant lecturer and spiritualist, held forth in tho Court House last Tuesday, "Wednesday and Thurs day evenings. As tho admission fee on the first evening was fifty cents, and as tho citi zens of Albany are proverbially slow at nib Wing at anything new or suspicious, we are told there was a very small turn-out ; but on "Wednesday evening, being a freo lecture, the hall was about one-third full. "We dropped in professionally rather than from any ex pectation of seeing anythingstrange or hear ing anything new or wonderful. Mrs. S. is, we judge, thirty-fivo or forty years of age, tastefully and neatly dressed, possessing a good figure, a strong pair of lungs for a female, and a rather intellec tual cast of countenance. That she has once been more than ordinarily good-looking, none can doubt ; and she possesses no mean powers as a public lecturer. She began by reciting a poem from some moon-struck fellow we have forgotten whom and then she went into a trance : that is, she closed her eyes and delivered her lecture, standing and gesticulating as one would if awake. The lecture, like all we ever heard or read, was full of poetic expressions "and high-flown hyperbole, and was venf severe on sects, and "priests," and orthodox de nominations generally. The savior of the world was considered a greaIteformer only; his teachings had fulfilled their mission, and mankind now yearn fur something better Tix : Spiritualism. Ltfie Swedenborg and Davis; she teaches that there are sevenpheres in the next world ; and that tho inhabitants will all le ultimately happy-rthus directly conflicting with the doctrines of an old fash ioned book some god folks have foolishly endorsed ; tor that teaches that, in the future state, mankind are divided into two classes, the good and the bad, the righteous and the wicked ; the former being eternally hap py, and th latter eternally miserable. Spiritualism, in all its phases, was thor oughly examined by us some years ago. We then arrived at clear and positive convictions .nd conclusions, and we have seen nor heard nothing since to change us in the least par ticular. " Ephraim is joined to his idols and we would like to be let alone. Tnx Saxtiasc Mixes. Some time ago a party of our citizens went out into the Cas cade mountains to examine a ledge which Mr. Brandenburg had previously discovered ; and after being absent several days, tiiey re turned, having with them a lot of ore a part of which they forwarded to San Francis co to be assayed. By the last steamer they re ceived the following returns : Sas Fbascisco. August 30th, 1SC7. Jfert. Goldsmith Bro's' This is very rich, and we hope our friends will realize something handsome on their discovery. At uisold Tricks. It will be recollec ted that one Leachcr was, some months ago, arrested by the Sheriff of this county, on a charge of stealing from Mr. Levy of this city. He subsequently gave bail and was set at liberty. Under dato. of September 10, the Sheriff of Washington county writes to Sheriff Smith that the said Leachcr is in his custody, charged with having stolen $128 in currency and 2 in coin from, a firm in IJi'.Is boro, and that he will be tried at the next term of the Circuit Court of that county. His sureties hore are trying to get hold of him in order to deliver' him up, and save paying a handsome sum as his bondsmen. Education-. l. At a late "meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Albany Collegiate Institute,, Her. W. J. Moxteitu was elected Pres.idnt and Professor of Ancient Lan guage and Literatqrc, and R. K. Wju&'ex, P-rcffisjar tf the English Department. Qthcr teachers will te. appointed, before the. opening of the Institution. A That Liov. The Salem Record editor says he believes all our 6tory of the Califor nia lion, of last week, except the "fourteen feet " part. "We said, neighbor, that our lion measured seven feet from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail and the same distance buck again fourteen feet in all If you disbelieve us, measure him yourself. Democratic Meeting. In another column will be found a call for a Mass Meeting of the Democracy of Benton county, at Corval lis, on Saturday the 28th inst. Democrats generally, everywhere, are invited to at tend ; and we hope that a good time will be had. Dr. J. P. Brtant, now of Salem, will b in Albany to-morrow, and will attend to sll diseased persons who will give him a call. His method of cure, if he cures at all, is bv the "Laying on of Hands." Ho remains one day only, at Sprenger's Hotel. Parrish &, Mexdexhall. This old and well-known firm will shortly be in receipt of a mammoth stock of fall and winter goods. Look out fcr the change in their advertise ment in the Dejiocbat. Customers jnay exr jpect bargains. H Chaxge op Firm. Within a few days past a change has been effected at Norcross' Establishment. It is now Norcross & Cowan. They will open a large and fresh assortment of goods next week. Warraxty Deeds.
