These diseases usually ru n th e ir course in a s h o r t tim e , r e s u l t i n g m r e c o v e r y >>■ d e a th , depending upon the severity of the disease and the prom ptness and adequacy of tre a t m ent. In contrast are chronic diseases w hich frequ en tly have a slow o n set. w ithout read ily identifiable sym ptom s and w ith o u t causing im m ediate indisposition. P ulm onary tuberculosis is a disease of the la t te r type. Its sym ptom s may not become ap p aren t until w eeks or e v en m onths after the lung has b e come diseased and the individual may not be aw are of his illness u n til the disease has p ro g ressed —u n less he has form ed the excellent h ab it of having his chest X -rayed at re g u la r intervals Since the X -ray can "see" tuberculosis before a persons know s he is ill. even a p p aren tly healthy people should have chest X -rays at least once a year. Ju s t as the onset of this chronic disease is slow, so is recovery. One of the first lessons th e tuberculosis patient m ust learn is patience He w ill in all p robability be advised to e n te r a san ato riu m o r tu b e rc u l osis hospital because th e re he can best obtain the rest, u n d er m edical supervision, w hich is so essential in th e treatm en t of tuberculosis As th e p a t i e n t responds to treat m ent and feels better, he m ay thin k he can go hom e However, he should not consider leaving the sanatorium the* until the doctor tells him it is p er fectly safe for him to do so The p atien t m ust rem em ber that the doctor is b etter inform ed of his progress th an th e patient him self and will advise him as soon as he can leave the hospital w ithout jeo pardizing his health TB p atien ts w ho leave the san a to riu m against medical advice are ru n n in g a tw o-fold danger Their disease is apt to grow w orse and an o th er period of hospitalization will be req u ired w hich may be long er than the original period F u rth e r more. the disease may still be in a com m unicable stage and the patient, in retu rn in g home, may endanger the health of his fam ily and friends R egardless of how well a TB pa tient may seem, both he and hjs fam ily should realize that the saf est course for all concerned is for him to rem ain in th e hospital until he receives his m edical discharge This colum n is sponsored, in the interest of b etter health, by Wash ington C ounty T B & H ealth A s sociation. She says that if com m ercially canned tom atoes are used th e ones w ith p uree and trim m ings are m ore d esirable due to the larg e am ount of juice. H ere's how . . . 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons b u tter 2 chopped m edium onions 2 cloves garlic, cut sm all 1 small green pepper, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 1 large can tom atoes 2 cans tom ato sauce 2 teaspoons W orcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons P arm esan cheese, salt and pepper to taste 1 Bay leaf, if desired 1 package long spaghetti 1 pound h am b u rg er Cook first five ingred ien ts to g eth er until tender, add m eat and brow n Add all of th e rem aining ingredients except th e spaghetti Sim m er for three hours.
