A cute diseases have a relatively
brief unset, a re accom panied by
pronounced sym ptom s and cause a l
m ost im m ediate indisposition. These
diseases usually ru n th e ir course
in a s h o r t tim e , r e s u l t i n g m r e c o v
e r y >>■ d e a th , depending upon the
severity of the disease and the
prom ptness and adequacy of tre a t
m ent.
In contrast are chronic diseases
w hich frequ en tly have a slow o n
set. w ithout read ily identifiable
sym ptom s and w ith o u t causing im
m ediate indisposition. P ulm onary
tuberculosis is a disease of the la t
te r type. Its sym ptom s may not
become ap p aren t until w eeks or e v
en m onths after the lung has b e
come diseased and the individual
may not be aw are of his illness u n
til the disease has p ro g ressed —u n
less he has form ed the excellent
h ab it of having his chest X -rayed
at re g u la r intervals
Since the
X -ray can "see" tuberculosis before
a persons know s he is ill. even a p
p aren tly healthy people should have
chest X -rays at least once a year.
Ju s t as the onset of this chronic
disease is slow, so is recovery. One
of the first lessons th e tuberculosis
patient m ust learn is patience He
w ill in all p robability be advised
to e n te r a san ato riu m o r tu b e rc u l
osis hospital because th e re he can
best obtain the rest, u n d er m edical
supervision, w hich is so essential
in th e treatm en t of tuberculosis
As th e p a t i e n t responds to treat
m ent and feels better, he m ay thin k
he can go hom e However, he should
not consider leaving the sanatorium
the*
until the doctor tells him it is p er
fectly safe for him to do so
The
p atien t m ust rem em ber that the
doctor is b etter inform ed of his
progress th an th e patient him self
and will advise him as soon as he
can leave the hospital w ithout jeo
pardizing his health
TB p atien ts w ho leave the san a
to riu m against medical advice are
ru n n in g a tw o-fold danger Their
disease is apt to grow w orse and
an o th er period of hospitalization
will be req u ired w hich may be long
er than the original period F u rth e r
more. the disease may still be in a
com m unicable stage and the patient,
in retu rn in g home, may endanger
the health of his fam ily and friends
R egardless of how well a TB pa
tient may seem, both he and hjs
fam ily should realize that the saf
est course for all concerned is for
him to rem ain in th e hospital until
he receives his m edical discharge
