poration, and that the city no
longer regarded it as valid. The
Mayor set forth that not a single

mains are now leaking, and had

that there are other failures.
The matter of a new contract
has lieen referred hy the council
to the Mavor and City Attorney,
and Mr. Welch has placed the
company's end of the controver
sy in the hands of the legal de

Samuel Arthur Lyon, well known
in and around Hillslioro. died Fri
day evening. July 7. 15)11. at the
home of his sister, Mrs. Foord,
on First street, lit- was a son of
W. A. and S. N. Lyon, and was
Imrit in Keokuk county. Iowa,
Sept. 'X 1HH1. and came to the
coast with the family at the age
of seven yearn. Aside from two
years in t'uliforniu he has since
made Oregon his home For a
mimU'r of years he has dealt in
horses, and was quite successful.
A year or so, ago he liecame a
sulferer with rheumatism, and
never retrained his health, A
sad feature of the case is that of
the severe illness of his mother,
who is bring cared for at the
home of her son, Ernest Lyons,
and front whom the news of the
son's death was kept, and the
brother, Krnest, was also too ill
to attend the funeral.
His mother and the following
brothers and sisters survive:
Krnest K., of North llillshoro;
Mrs. ltose Foord, wife of It. K.
Foord, Hillshorn; Miss Hhoda
Lyon and Mrs. Estelle McKern,
Portland; Frederick 0. Lvon, of
llillshoro.
The funeral took place Mon
day afternoon, from the Foord
home, Rev. Hlackwell oHiciating.
Interment was in the I. 0. 0. F.
new cemetery.

ance. Gov. West is in Central
Oregon, with the desert land
hoard, and will not return until
next week, unless something of

work here, the ollice is an im
portant one. There is much
speculation as to whom (!ov.
West will appoint. Thos. Talbot,
ol Cornelius, has been busy send
ing out petitions asking the ap
pointment of Jasper K. Keevis,
and the papers have many signa
tures. Friends of the following
have been asking the considera
tion of Hon. Ira E. Purdin, ami
K. t). Stevenson, late state game
warden, Forest Grove, and Dan
baker, of the same locality,
while not a few have been favor
able to the candidacy of 1). H.
"urkhalter, the well known
rarmington dairyman. It is con
ceded, however, that the appoint
ment will fall to a democrat.

A moonlight picnic was given bv
the Keystone-League of 0. K.,of
the United Lvangelical Church.
in the Iiillsboro Park, on Monday
evening, duly 10, at K o clock.
The program consisted of the
Monthly business meeting of the
Kndeav or, singing of songs, play
ing ol games, all in the moon
light, with a large bon-firein the
ark ground. The grove was
decorated with Japanese lanterns,
under w hich was spread a table
which groaned with the burden
of good things to eat. There
were present 12.") members and
friends of the K. L. C 10.
The evening was given in part
as a tarewell to Trot. A. U.
Davis and mother, who are mov
ing to St. Johns, Ore., where
Mr. Davis lias accepted a po
sition in the post ollice.
At 10::I p. in., all departed
for their homes declaring that
they had had the evening of
their life.
