Haines from per forming his contract recently closed with that city to furnish electric lights. They allege that one of the council men who was a party to the contract was not legally a member f the council, and that the con tract is for that reason null and void. Frank Clapsbaw, of Gales Creek, last Saturday had the misfortune to shoot some ol the flesh off one f the fingers of his right hand. The young man was loading a Winchester rille and the cartridge would not readily enter the maga zine. Clapsbaw endeavored to force the shell in by tapping it with some object. The funeral of the late Mrs John Berrie, of Glencoe. was held last Sunday, the services being in the afternoon. The hearse went out to the hills and over some very bad roads, Undertaker Lamkin had charge of the funeral. WELL KNOWS PI0XEEK OP 1M52. Had Kraidtd 00 Donation Land Claim fur 44 Ytars. A Good Woman. Mrs. Mary Itaffety, pioneer of '52, and wil of the late Samuel B. Raffety, died Sunday evening, at 5 o'clock, at her home, Mountaindale, after an illness of several weeks, she was 78 years old, and for half a century had lived on the old home place, scattering blessings and good deeds all about her. In 1852, with her husband, she Started across the plains, riding in a wag on which moved at the van of a train of 62 wagons, of which her husband, Samuel B. Raffety, was captain. The train nu wifely piloted through many trylug event reaching the West before the year was out, and tbe Raffety ruled 00 tbe old donation land claim in Washington county 49 year ago. The home place became noted for hoptUlity far and near. Mr. Raffety lived to make others happy, and her life at Mountaindale was a constant benediction to tbe neighborhood. She was equally at home in the sick room and the house of distress, and the entire community. young and old, regard bet death aa a personal low. During her sickness the deepest solicitude was displayed fur miles over ber condition, and it was re garded as a privilege with the families at Mountainaale to minister to her com fort in the slightest way. She loved the beautiful and noble in all things. She was a friend of children and dumb ani mals, and loved to mingle with them. Her husband died atne years ago. Eiubt children were boru to tbem, the-' lollowing seven surviving: Drt. C. II. and Dav and R. M. Raffety, Portland. East Side; Mrs. Sarah Miller. San lose. Cal.; Samuel J., Jacob C. Raffety and airs. Louisa Wlrtz, Mountaindale, The funeral took place Tuesday after noon at 1 o'clock, from ber late home. and Mountaindale cemetery was the place ol interment. FIRE DEFT ELECTS. The Yolunteer' Fire Department last Saturday evening elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Chief, L. A. Long; Assist ant, Gal. Jack, Jr-; President E. B. Tongue; Vice-pres, H. T. Bagley; Secretary, O. B. Gates, with J. O. Crandall, assistant; Treasurer, U. G. Gardner; Foreman Hose Corps, C. Jack, aFsistant, C. L. Chamber lain; Foreman Ladder Corps, U. G. Gardner, assistant J. T. Beauch amp; Board of Fire Delegates, E. B. Sappington, J. B. Wilkes, Benton Bowman, J. W. Bailey and L. A. IxMig. The department is now nu merically the strongest since its organization and is electing new members at every meeting. Ex- chief Weatherred was present at the meeting and gave the depart ment encouraging words for the way matters had been handled, Six fires have occured during the year. In four of the cases, but trifling damage ensued. The resi denoe of Mrs, J. E. Adkins burned in July but there was four hundered insurance. Ti.e residence of Mrs Reeves burned in November, but contents were saved. All other loses did not exceed $15 each. LAW AS TO ESTRAYS. There are always many estrays taken up in tbis county. It ib therefore well for farmers to know just what the law is in this regard l here is a hne of from ten to one hundred dollars for not following the law. First, when you lake up an estray, post three notices. W ith- in ten days the owner may come, and by proving property, paying one dollar fees and the cost of keep ing. take his animal. After ten days you must notify the county clerk and the animal is sold after being appraised, being advertised in a newspaper if of over the value of $5. In May and November you are not permitted to take up estrays unless they are breachy or vicious. PUBLIC SALE. He was then broken out, but felt reasonably well and did not suspect the nature of his ailment His many friends hope he will get through without any trouble, nnd that the contagion will efficiently be stamtted out before there are any more cases. Dr. Tamiesin is attending the patient, and is doing a great deal of vacci nation in that vicinity. Those farmers in the reg ion where there are indications of oil should take advantage of this offer and have developement work started as soon as possible.
