The citizens of Forest Grove are
nioining E. W. Haines from per
forming his contract recently closed
with that city to furnish electric
lights. They allege that one of the
council men who was a party to the
contract was not legally a member
f the council, and that the con
tract is for that reason null and
void. Mr. Haines has already
placed his dynamo in position and

The funeral of the late Mrs
John Berrie, of Glencoe. was held

Mrs. Mary Itaffety, pioneer of '52,
and wil of the late Samuel B.
Raffety, died Sunday evening, at 5
o'clock, at her home, Mountaindale,
after an illness of several weeks,
she was 78 years old, and for half
a century had lived on the old
home place, scattering blessings
and good deeds all about her. In
1852, with her husband, she Started
across the plains, riding in a wag
on which moved at the van of a
train of 62 wagons, of which her
husband, Samuel B. Raffety, was
captain.
The train nu wifely piloted through
many trylug event reaching the West
before the year was out, and tbe Raffety
ruled 00 tbe old donation land claim in
Washington county 49 year ago. The
home place became noted for hoptUlity
far and near. Mr. Raffety lived to
make others happy, and her life at
Mountaindale was a constant benediction
to tbe neighborhood. She was equally
at home in the sick room and the house
of distress, and the entire community.

miles over ber condition, and it was re
garded as a privilege with the families at
Mountainaale to minister to her com

year. In four of the cases, but
trifling damage ensued. The resi

in July but there was four hundered

loses did not exceed $15 each.
LAW AS TO ESTRAYS.
There are always many estrays
taken up in tbis county. It ib
therefore well for farmers to know
just what the law is in this regard
l here is a hne of from ten to one
hundred dollars for not following
the law. First, when you lake up
an estray, post three notices. W ith-
in ten days the owner may come,
and by proving property, paying
one dollar fees and the cost of keep
ing. take his animal. After ten
days you must notify the county
clerk and the animal is sold after
being appraised, being advertised
in a newspaper if of over the value
of $5. In May and November you
are not permitted to take up estrays
unless they are breachy or vicious.

yesterday. He was then broken
out, but felt reasonably well and
did not suspect the nature of his
ailment His many friends hope
he will get through without any
trouble, nnd that the contagion will
efficiently be stamtted out before
there are any more cases. Dr.
Tamiesin is attending the patient,
and is doing a great deal of vacci
nation in that vicinity. Rigid
quarantine ia being established and
as tbe case appears t3 lie a mild one
there may be no spread of the ma
lady. If Hillshoro gets the railroad,

Andrew Stewart, who lives six
miles north of Hillshoro, on Thais-
day, while chopping wood on the
Cawrse place, cut his foot quite
severely. The ci extended through
the foot and was about four inches
in length, requiring six stitches to
close it. Dr. Bailey dressed the
wound and Andrew will go on
crutches tor a while.
E. L. McCormick has removed
his bicycle Btore to the Crandall
block, occupied by E. L. Abbott,
Mr. McCorbiick has merged the
two stores and will be pleased to
meet 'his old patrons at his new
quarters.
The Methodist church in this city
is being thoougbly renovated by
Peterson & Son, of Gales Creek.
The walls are being cleaned and
kalsomined and will be given a
deep olive tint. The seats are to
be newly painted and grained, and
when the painters are uhrough the
bouse of worship will be pleasing
to the eye.

Mrs. C. F. Bergestrand, of Reed
ville, died of heart failure the first
of the week, and buried in the
Hillshoro cemetery yesterday. De
ceased was a native of Sweden, and
leaves a husband, one daughter in
Idaho, one son and two daughters
at Reedville, to mourn her loss.
