John Higley was at the coast over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Buell and Mrs. G. A. Brown are at the Hazel B. cot tage. Mr. and Mrs. Hi Nager have opened the Hager cottage. Children's parties and bonfires Indicate that the season at Seaview is in full swing. Moonlight nights have made the beach popular. Much interest has been displayed in the activities of the hundreds of boats fishing just off shore. Many of them have remained out over night, and the ocean often appears to have a " lighted city floated out not far from the beach. Mrs'. E. L. Lueddemann and Dan Lueddemann are visiting at the D. Clark and two EXPERT SWIMMERS IX DEMAND Six Xear-Drownings Furnish Abun dant Excitement at' Seaside. SEASIDE, Or., July 31. (Special.) Six near-drownings last week fur nished plenty of excitement at Sea side, where expert swimmers found themselves In demand. A peculiar feature of the accidents is that prac tically all calls for help came from the vicinity, of the life-line opposite Broadway. .Mr. and Mrs. John R. Latourette came down last Saturday to be with the remainder- of the Latourette fam ily near the board walk. Atlolph Neu last, week-end joined Mrs. Neu (Heien Minsinger), who is visiting Mrs., E. A. O'Neill at tb.e Smith cottagel Mr. and Mrs. Lewis I. Thompson motored down to be with Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Thompson on the board walk. Mrs. Margaret Biddle, who has been visiting Mrs. J. Griswold, returned last week to Portland. Miss Leslie Kerns was registered at the Seaside hotel with Mrs. J. F. Shea and her daughter, Dorothy Hill Shea. Much, interest has been shown in the illuminated fountain now in op eration on the newly planted lawn in front of the Seaside hotel. The foun tain has insets of colored mosaic through which light shines at night. It stands in the middle of a pool. about which a pansy bed has been planted. Betty Brink has been visitiner Miss Dorothy Dunne and will later Join her family, who have taken the Callender house for the latter part of the sea son. Mr. and Mrs. Sljmund Frank passed part of last week at Seaside. Mrs. I-rank's cousin, Miss Labcnthal, of San Francisco, accompanied them. Mr. and Mrs. W.. A. Selvidite motored aown Irom Billings. Richard and Tom Kneeland, and Mary and Lucile Umbdenstock. Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Rogers and daughter. Atha. returned home after passing their vacation here. Another group that will be missed at the beach was made up of J. B. Moore. Mrs. H. R. Letcher. Imogene Letcher. Luella Hardy and Mrs. Mabel Smith, all of whom have gone home. Mrs. Grace Umbdenstock went up to Portland last Thursday and re turned to the beach Sunday. While she and her family are occupying the Yates house the name has been changed to "The Umbs." Her three daughters. Virginia. Lucile and Mary, also Mrs. Flora Mecklem, will be with Mrs. Umbdenstock throughout' the month of August. Mr. and Mrs. Baltis Allen and their son and daughter departed for Port land last Sunday. , Albert Berni passed last Sunday here with his family. Miss Margaret Ainslee has come to the coast to be the guest of Mrs. John A. Beckwith. The Wheelhouse cottage is housing merry party composed of Mr. and Mrs. A. Wheelhouse, Lillian Ward. Floyd Maxwell, - Mr. and Mrs. Earl Snell, Mrs. Charles Ames and Clara Wheelhouse. The Snells were mar ried just recently, and. this is their wedding trip. Mrs. Hattie D. Bord is visiting her sister, Mrs. Charles Brown, at Can non beach. The beautiful home of F. R. Dres- back on Ocean View ridge has re cently been sold to H. F. Chapin of Portland, who, with his family. will take possession about August 1 Mr. and Mrs. Dresback are return ing to their former home in Kansas City Mrs. Ernest Goldapp is the guest of Mrs. J. H. Dakin for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Cuehman of Portland, accompanied by Miss Inez Blanchard of Plymouth, Mass., are spending two weeks in one of the Cornell cottages. Captain E. B. Hammond, marine recruiting officer, with Mrs. Ham mond, Miss Harriet Hammond and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Potter, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. R- O'Connor. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Morg-an and Miss Rhoda Morgan of Sacramento, visited Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Batstone and son last Sunday. The Batstones had been spending a few weeks at "Idle Nook near Elk creek, and returned to Port land the latter part of the week. Miss Joy Johnson and Mrs. N. F. Johnson, who had been guests at the Gripper cottage, returned home Sun day night- Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fisher and baby, Earl Jr., arrived here last week. July 31. (Spe cial.) Golf continues to hold the cen ter 'of the stage at Gearhart and has attracted many Portland business men for the week ends. A number of new amateurs are also to be seen out on the links taking advantage of the sunshiny days. Mrs. Kurt Koehler was scheduled to arrive Monday to visit her sister, Mrs. Holt Cookingham. Miss Katherine Carter is the house guest of Margaret Cook, having come back with the latter, wno paid a oner visit to Hood River, where Miss Car ter's home is. Harold Mann of Portland also passed the week end at the Walter Cook sum mer home. Miss Mary Jane Ferguson of Walla Walla is the guest of the R. E. Allen family. ' ' Mrs. J. "Whitcomb Brougher, accom panied by her son James and her daughter Corlne motored here from Los Angeles and have opened their house. On the way they visited two weeks at Yosemite. Dr. Brougher is expected here August 1. Mr. and Mrs. George B. Cellars ar rived a week ago Friday to occupy their beach cottage. Nancy Honeyman has as her guest this week, little Phyllis Hart The W. J. Burns house is being 6c cupied this season by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Robertson, who arrived last Saturday. Mrs. Robertson is Mr. Burns' daughter.- Mrs. Max Hirsch was hostess last week at a luncheon given at Seaside. Mrs. W. D. Walker is entertaining Miss Nan Gowns for several weeks. XEAHKAHX1E TRAIL CLEARED Eieht-Mile Hike From Cannon Beach Is Proving Popular. ECOLA, Or.. July 31. (Special.) Clearing or the trail to Neahkahnie from Cannon beach has made this eight-mile hike extremely popular. The route had grown over with brush during the winter and was practically Impossible. Moonlight nights last week made beach parties quite the thing and numerous bonfires dotted the sand each night. One of the biggest was given by the girls from the Warren hotel, who invited a number of the young folk from the cottages to join them. Mrs. -W. T. Perkins has taken a tent house for the season and has with her at Cannon beach her daugh ter, Dorothy Gill, also Mr. and Mrs. Don. W. Yantis of The Dalles, and Tommy and Margaret Shevlin. Mr. Perkins was down for the week-end. Mrs. H. Hanno and her sister. Mrs Ida A. Haehlen. are in Kirkhanno lodge for the month of August. The outstanding event of the last week at this resort was the ex cursion of the Southern Pacific em ployes. They arrived on two special trains of 17 coaches each, with the overflow coming on the afternoon train. The 1700 visitors enjoyed to the full the delights of beach and surf. The elaborate programme ar ranged by James Ruddiman. master of ceremonies, was appreciated by summer visitors and excursionists alike. The Southern Pacific band, only lately organized, played cred itably under the direction of Albert Kropp. A baseball game between the freight and machine departments di vided interest with prize races on the beach. Dancing in the Rockaway pavilion, chartered for the occasion, occupied the evening. A special mid night train, making the round trip from Tillamook to Wheeler, accom modated the local crowds.
