10 LOW TIDE AT SUNSET HOUR CONDUCIVE TO PROMENADING fi, Vi"j s5 ORTH BEACH, Wash, Aug. 2. 1 (Special.) Low tide at the sunset ' hour this week has given many an opportunity to walk and the beach has become a gTeat promenade for the cot tagers. Automobiles, too have taken to the miles-long: stretch of smooth liard sand and horsebaclc riders seem to find riding: on the beach at evening, a. delightful diversion. The low tide has left many crabholes where the youngsters come for a final sail with ga.y painted boats or where they beg to be allowed to wade before going borne to make ready for bedtime. In terest In the numberless fishing craft brings spectators to the beach and the splendid sunsets Tie ver fail to claim the admiration of the evening crowds. The sun scarcely sets when bright spots along the beach tell that bonfires have been lighted. The very earliest ones are generally lighted for children and later the older groups gather around the fires to sing and to roast xnashmallows and potatoes. A. big majority of the cottages are now occupied along the peninsula ana there are many who coie to the coast for the week-end. Several families are bere for the month of August. Among the prominent Portland eum rner visitors at the beach is Mrs. H. W. Corbett, who opened her home Friday. It is situated on the ocean front and is one of the most attractive on the peninsula. In their cottage on the ridge, Mrs Lake T. Wolfard and daughter. Miss Pauline Wolfard, are spending a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Tanner have re turned home after a visit at Seaview. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Page and two daughters. Misses Helen and Frances came down to the beach Monday to spend a few weeks at their attractive cottage on the ridge at Tioga. Miss Klizabeth Richardson and Miss Margaret Bronaugh are spending a week, at the Connell cottage at Ocean Park. Miss Jeanette Sewall Is the house gruest of Miss Dorothy Schmeer at Ocean Park. Mrs. Theodore B. Wilcox arrived at the beach Monday. She is at her hand- Bome home in the Willows and her son, Theodore B. Wilcox Jr., is with her. Leland l.owenson is the guest of his grandmother, Mrs. Ida Lowenson, at ber boulevard cottage. Mrs. Frank Heitkemper and son are numbered among the cottage folk at fieaview. Mrs. James O'Shea ud children have arrived at the beach to spend the sea Bon. Mr. O'Shea was with his family ever the week-end Mrs. O. R. Knight and three little sons. George, IMck and Bill have the Ladd cottage for August. Mr. Knight came down for the week-end. J. P. Wildman spent the week-end with his family, who are at the R. B. Knight cottage. Two automobiles bore a merry party to North Head recently for a picnic and day of exploration of caves, beaches and features of the government sta tion. Those who made the trip were Mrs. Victor Allen, Miss McLean, Mrs. Patterson. Mrs. Ralph Norrls. Mrs. Ken neth Xorris, Mary Klizabeth Norris, Kenneth Norris, Iorothy Norris, Mrs. K. B. Hagadorn and family. Hugh cJlen and his daughter, Mrs. Grace Crichton. have returned to the beach after a short sojourn in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. W. r. Richards have taken a cottage at the beach for the summer season. In the Stout cottage Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Durrett are domiciled. The Parrish cottage is sheltering Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Roy C. Burnett was among the men who came to the coast for the week end. He and Mrs. Burnett also' enjoyed a short stay at Seaside. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ferris and fam ily arrived Saturday to be the guests of G. H. Ferris for a week. In the Strauhal tent Mrs. J. G. Barnes and family are summering. Mrs. L. A. Harned and Haldane Harned are numbered among the cot tage residents at North Beach. Mrs. L. E. Kern has come to her cot tage and is entertaining her daughter, Mrs. Hendricks. In a pretty cottage in the woods Miss Madge Kramer, Miss Johanna Kramer and Miss Marguerite Kaiser are spend ing a few weeks. Thomas Gerber spent the week-end with his wife who is summering in a geaview cottage with Mrs. E. Sound. Kenneth Norris was a week-end vis itor at Seaview where his wife and children. Kenneth and Mary Elizabeth, are spending the season. Mrs. Ralph Norris and Dorothy Norris are also with them at the Hagadorn cottage. Miss Annie Healy and Miss Margaret Realy are visiting Mrs. Frank Healy at her cottage on the boulevard. An attractive cottage is occupied by Mrs. H. F. Striker and four children. A group of cottagers hiked to North Head and Deadman's Hollow Wednes day for a picnic. The party included Dr. and Mrs. M. J. McMahon and fam ily and Mrs. T. P. Maney and family. David Jamison McDaniel from San Francisco celebrated his sixth birthday Thursday with a "victory" party at the home of his grandmother at Bide-a-wee cottage. Table decorations were of red, white and blue with flags of the allied nations. Ten little folks on the beach were his guests, enjoying games and fireworks. Nonearle French Ryder and John Thomas were prize winners. An enjoyable day was spent at Fort Canby by a group of young people. Even the weather has been favorable to the care free summer colony, for cool, re freshing days have been many, giving opportunity for all kinds of beach ac tivities. One of the popular trips, which may be a walk if one goes a little way or a hike if one goes a long way, is the Til lamook head trip. The path leads along.by the ocean, over stiles and be tween boulders, dips into the spruce woods and then on the short trip, goes out to the ocean again. The harder trip is a steady climb up the mountain along the spruce logging road. Henry Stevens, who shared honors with Catlin Wolfard in the Oregon state doubles championship in tennis, spent last weekend at the Hotel Sea side. Mrs. P. M. Stevens accompanied her son. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Meier and son Jack and Mrs. S. J. Mayer, who motored to the coast, have returned home after a short visit. They were guests at the Hotel Seaside. Wash., have opened their attrac tive cottage, Triton, on the Doarowam. They will be joined later by Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Eberle. The tri-weekly dances .riven at the Casino are yet proving very popular with the younger set. Standing room is Impossible and one wonders how it is possible to glide over the thronged floor. The spectators crowd the street. A number of beach parties and beach Ores bave been given throughout the week, one of the largest being the crowd gathered to hear the address given Monday evening by Walter Taylor Sumner, bishop of the Episcopal dio cese of Oregon. Mrs. J. L. Standlfer, Percy P; Adams, T. Loew, E. M. Niei are among the Eu gene families to arrive this week. Miss Ruth E. Calvert of Mount Ange is passing her summer vacation here. Mrs. H. J. Horton arrived from Baker and will remain several weeks at this coast. J. C. Beers and family came over from Albany Monday to remain for the month of August. COMMUNITY BONFIRE ENJOYED Fully Eight Hundred People Gather at Rockaway Beach. ROCKAWAY, Or.. Aug. 2. (Special.) The second community bonfire of the season was enjoyed by fully S00 people. -Crowds come from miles around, afoot. by train, and by auto, to participate in the festivities and to enjoy the pro gramme of novelties and stunts' pre pared by the manager, W. D. Shafer. Owing to an unexpected important en gagement of the Wilkins Jazz orches tra, this popular organization was un able to play -at the bonfire, much to the disappointment of all present. At the home of George Self, July 26. was held a party in honor of the fourth birthday of George Marshall Self Jr. The guests were Frankie Miller, Rex Burnett, Helen Shafer, Jackie Jasmann, Rhodona, Flocele and Louise Poage. - A welcome addition to the equipment of the Rockaway Union Sunday school, is 60 new song books.
