Other Work Is Done, Too. What the motor truck and car can accomplish as a means of wholesale transportation Is being- demonstrated ially In France by the American Red Cross fleet of 634 vehicles. These not only handle an average of 2500 tons of freight monthly at 14 jorts, move nearly 1000 tons per week from the Parts stations and the Seine landings, but transport supplies, work-rs- refugees and wounded In all sec tions of France, not omitting those parts under shell-fire. If a hospital eujjdenly wires in that it needs emer gency supplies, if a car or truck will ret them there quicker than a train, the load goes with a Red Cross driver. 1, v Refugees Moved Away. ' It a. German drive threatens a vll Irko. Red Cross trucks are there to move the civilians and their belongings to a. point of safety or hasten them to refugee trains waiting at distant sta tions. The ambulance may assist with wounded soldiers on their' way back to- base hospitals or may answer a calfc from a bombing raid to help un cover and remove the wounded. Trucks, ambulances and cars all Berye at times as passenger vehicles. Irv - two months they answered 2528 calls to "move people in Paris alone many of them being refugees to be taken from one railroad depot to an other. In a single week, there were 2.13 "city calls, 130 for. Journeys outside ot Paris, and 47 cars were sent for pro longed duty near the Army lines. OC the fleet, 385 are trucks and am bulances, 246 ordinary cars, and 22 motor bicycles. To keep the fleet mov ing, the Red Cross maintains two large parages and an automobile park . in iaris. Real Speed Here. Fifteen other garages meet the needs of the port and other transportation cervices. Complete machine shops with skillled mechanics are maintained at the "chief garage. Speed In handling: goods at the ports Js an essential, and the Red Cross driv ers are rather proud of moving 300 tons from one landing in a single day. A single cargo of 38,000 cases, weighing 980 tons, was handled with similar epeed by the gasoline transportation corps. The goods platform at Paris may contain 15,000 cases at a time. Over 80 per cent of the Red Cross supplies have to pass through the cap ital on their final journey of relief. Practically every article shipped via Red Cross from America, whether a baby's sock, a case of bandages, or a complete hospital equipment, is han dled at some point in one of these cars. CLEAXIXG OUT AUTO RADIATOR Muriatic Acid Good to Get Rid or Scale and Sediment. r If hard water is used in the cooling System, scale is Hkely to form In the radiator, says Milestones. Rust may gather there with any water. Open the pet cock at the bottom ot the radiator several times a year and allow all the water to run out, refilling with clean, eoft water. Do not fill the radiator en tirely full, as water expands. with heat. Iake sure that the overflow pipe Is not clogged by running a wire down it. If you have trouble with cooling after a season's use, the radiator may be cleaned of scale and sediment with muriatic acid. Place the car where the drainage from the radiator will run away from the tires and drain the cool ing system. After closing the pet cock fill the radiator with water to which a Quart of commercial muriatic acid has been added. Place the radiator cap in position, run the motor for five minutes at slow speed and then drain thorough ly. Fill with fresh water and run motor again for five minutes. Drain the radiator again and rinse thoroughly with clean water. It is essential to wash the cleaning solution from the radiator. To this end it is well to drain and refill the radiator daily for two or three days following the cleaning. MABEL GOES UP WILSON RIVER Driving Hupmoblle, He Gets Over . Old Road Without-Trouble. The old Wilson River road between Portland and Tillamook is in better condition than earlier this year, re ports E. C. Habel, sales manager of the Jvlanley Auto Company,, who, accom panied by Mrs. Habel and Mr. and Mrs. Lew Wallace, drove as far as AVilson on the Wilson River last Sunday to fish. They found the road passable except for a few bad places. There are some very bad grades, Mr. Habel reports, this side of the summit of the divide, running as steep as 25 to 30 per cent. One of these grades Is over a mil long, and is especially hard to climb because of -a sharp turn which slows down the momentum of the car. Mr. Habel drove over this road ' at night, which he admits was a foolish thing to do, and advises all other motorists to do it in broad daylight. His party had some good fishing to repay them Xor the perils of the night trip. ' T. C. AVAKKE.V TRUCK MASTER Portland Auto Man in Army Quickly I Steps Up From Private. Friends of D. C. Warren, of the D. C. Warren Motor Car Company, Velie dis tributor here, have received word from him that he has been transferred from Fort McDowell, where he went as Cap tain of a draft contingent of several hundred men on June 2, to Mather Field, an aviation camp near Sacra mento. CaL He has been made truck master and put in charge of all the motor trucks at the camp. Mr. Warren is an experienced auto mechanic and truck as well as passen ger car man, and the Army is taking advantage of his abilities in thlB line. He writes that the people of Sacra mento are very good to the soldiers at Mather field, that they give them pic nics and dances continually and take them for automobile rides. Emery Aids Drilling. LOOSE TALK HEARO Most of Taxation Rumors Not , : Based on. Fact. NO OCCASION FOR WORRY Whatever Is Done, Government Will Not Put Prohibitive Tax on Pas senger ' Cars and Gas, De clares Roy: Hemphill. Rumors and' stories passed from mouth to mouth have in the past proved a serious menace to the Gov ernment and the carrying on of our part in the war. These rumors, most of them entirely false, some of them with just enough basis of fact in them to bd more damaging, have been uncovered and brought to light about every branch of the service, about the T. M. C. A., the Red Cross, the Knights of Columbus and many other war activities. It is the belief of many that these stories have their basis in the spy system that infests our country and which the secret service is attempt ing to wipe out. "Rumors and stories in regard to the automobile industry should also be regarded with every care," said Roy Hemphill, manager of the Westean Mo tor Car Sales Co., Chalmers distribu tors. "Talk of gasoline shortages, shut ting off the passenger car business, taxing gasoline and automobiles so that it will be prohibitive to , own them should all be taken, with a 'grain of salt,' as the saying is. "The Government and the men at the helm are pretty reliable, sensible people. They have proven their level headedness by the way in which they have put American soldiers in the field and American industries on a war basis, s They are going to do nothing which will adversely affect millions of American people. ' "Certain sacrifices, of course, are necessary during war .time and while the boys at the front are giving their lives, the people at home will not mind doing without many things and in fact are more than anxious to give and do without that America may win. This, however, does not mean that- any one necessity will be over-burdened with taxation, for that would defeat the purpose of the tax. "The idea of a tax Is to'raise money, and taxes that are too high defeat their own ends by keeping people from using the objects taxed. Consequently thera seems to be no occasion for worry over the situation. "Of course, it must be understood that, all kinds of propositions will be discussed at Washington and that con sequently there will be all kinds of reports as to what is liable to happen, but as a general rule it will be found that discussion and legislation are two entirely different things. The law when it is made is most frequently not at all like the preliminary discussion had led us to believe it would be. "It's a- mighty good rule in these days to wait until something is actually made a law before we start to worry about it. It makes no difference what a prominent Congressman' or "a well known official' confides to an eager correspondent. It is only when his views become the law of the land that we need to take' heed of them. "The English have a good expres sion that it might be well for us' to heed and to follow. It is simply two words, but it means everything. They say 'Carry on.' Let us practice It." New Car Owners in County. RIM NEGLECT BAD Tires Will Not Last, if Rim Isn't Cared For. EXPERT ADVICE IS GIVEN Tightening' of Bolts on Wedges That Hold Rim to Wheel Very Import ant, as Is Applying Graphite to Prevent Rust. With th extnems need ot conserva tlon of automobile tires being con stantly brought to the attention of the Nations tire users, thousands of mo torlsts who formerly little heeded re peated Injunctions to consider their tires are applying the various rec- ommenaea ttre-savers that add so much to tire life. It Is characteristic of a great-many exhortations on tire care, however, that they refer mainly to the tire itself to the exclusion of other im portant elements that really have a vital bearing on the tires life. And tires cannot be made to run out their alloted mileage except through' the application of all tire-saving prin ciples. "In the use of tires, the care of the rim or its neglect has a much greater effect than commonly sup posed," is the declaration of James Atkins, manager of the rim department of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Com pany. "Bent rims cause a lot of trou ble commonly attributed to other causes. I have known tines to go out of commission before giving S00 miles of service, due to a break in the tire Just above the bead, caused by a bent rim. "Loose, demountable rims causa a lot of tire trouble. If one of the small wedges that helps to hold the rim tight to the wheel becomes loose or Jiggles off,, the rim starts "working" and gradually- the other wedges work loose. Then the rim begins to "creep" and the valve stem beans the entire strain. The result is the same as when a bicycle tire creeps the valve stem pulls off. and a tire change Is un avoidable. "In applying a demountable rim. great care must be used to make sure that the rim is tightened as nearly uniform as possible around its circum ference. If the wedges are drawn up unevenly the tire will wobble and the tnead will wear off abnormally. Usually by careful prying after get ting the wedges even, the rim will slip Into Its place on the wheel easily and there will be no need of pound ing the rim to get it on. I have seen motorists pound both the rim and the tire savagely with a sledge hammer to get a rim off or on. This is bad, for every blow on the tire may cause a fabric break and the pounding on the rim may bend it. "Rusty nims are responsible for a lot of damage. The corrode tubes make tire changing difficult and cause the tire to "freeze" on. Moisture is bound to ' work In any type of rim. But its effects can be nullified by. care ful periodical inspection of your Tims. They should be cleaned up at least once every six months and treated with graphite. Ordinary paint will not suf fice, as the beat generated by the tine will melt the paint' and the tire will stick to the rim. So be sure to use graphite. "Tlghte'n up the bolts on the wedges that hold the rim to the wheel at least monthly. Any car owner who takes the time to Inspect his rims periodically and keep them in good condition will certainly save himself both trouble and money." Another Big. Drlveaway. So successful was the driveway from Spokane to Seattle, staged by the W. S. Dulmage Company, that another will be made in the near future. More than 50 cars were sent from the Chevrolet warehouse at Spokane over to the city on the Sound, and In spite of the 350 miles of rough country between the two points, the entire caravan arrived at Its destination without the slightest sign of trouble. Breeze, of Portland, is the in ventor of a new type of wheel for motor trucks which Is an entirely orig inal departure from all previously ac cepted wheel designs. Instead of using a rubber tire tread Mr. Breeze uses se lected Oregon fir blocks for the tread of his wheel, a model of which is on exhibition In the Window of Jennlnsr's furniture store at Klftb and Wash ington streets. Any standard truck wheel is used on which to place the tread of fir blocks. These blocks are made In key stone, fitted In and bedded Into a solid rubber band three-quarters of an inch thick at the base. The blocks have a tread of one and one-half to two inches. They are cut across grain from selected pieces cut from fir stumps, the stump having the toughest wood In the whole tree. When the blocks are worn out it Is a very simple and inexpensive matter to install a new set of them by remov ing a rim plate on the outside of the wheel, then inserting the new blocks. Mr. Breeze makes the claim, however, that they will last nearly as long as a rubber tire and that the expense will be very much less. A set of the new treads Is to be installed for testing purposes on a two-ton O. M. C. truck operated be tween Portland and Vancouver. Wash., by the Weeks Trucking Company. Chevrolet Climbs Hills.
