formance of a device that he will give
tip a good position to handle It. motor
ists in general will watch It with deep
Interest.
Nearly everybody In the automobile
world hereabouts knows Hoy Wilson,
road and territory man for the Manley
Auto Company. Well. Mr. Wilson made
av series of very careful tests with the
utomlxer, the result of which has been
that ha became so thoroughly con
vinced of Its merits that he baa re
signed and gone to Southern California
to take over the rights to the automlxer
and handle It In that territory.
Aataealaera Delivery Fleet.
The Meier Frank Company has
Installed automlzers on all the automo
biles of Its big delivery fleet. This
was dona only after extended testa, of
which the most minute records were
kept, had demonstrated Its efficiency.
Dr. Ong developed the automtser In
apare momenta, mostly at night, as a
alversloo from his big surgical prac
tice. He had long been convinced that
something vital was lacking In the
construction of the modern carburetor.
la carrying out his experiments he
replaced part of the Intake manifold
of his car by a glasa tuba. By meana
of a hlfh power nitrogen light placed
behind the tuba, he was able to note
exactly what occurred after the gaso
line mixture left the carburetor.
He very quickly demonstrated that
the wire screens, butterfly valves, per
forated canopies and the like used In
carburetors not only do not give the
(.roper mix. but fall utterly to dis
tribute this mix properly. The action
f the value la the ordinary carburetor,
tie experiments stowed, deflects tbe
roil to one side of the Intake manifold.
Instead of expanding and filling the
circumference of the Intake manifold,
the mixture remains on that side.
Moreover, the air oa the other side
does not mix with the gasoline, ills
experiments showed that there seems
to bo as definite an antipathy between
them aa between oil and water. The
reeult was. and la, that the cylinders at
oaa end of the motor receive mora of
the liquid gasoline than those at the
ether end. the result being that certain
cylinders become weak and dirty.

Finally, after prolonged experiments.
Or. Ong discovered that a physical phe
nomena, known aa the sorfacs tension
f liquids, prevents tbe gasoline or
other fuel from entering the air In a
condition that would permit of I ts
burning with the exploalon. This prtn
, ciple has been entirely overlooked by
tb carburetor makers.
The explanation of the operation of
this principle la rather technical, but
la brief the action of the automlxer
may ba summed np as follows:
Tbe automlxer consists, as already
noted, of aa annular grooved flan
which Is placed between the carburetor
and the Intake manifold. The purpose
f the groove, wblch Is what doea the
business. Is to collect and distribute the
heavier portion of the sasolme after It
has passed the carburetor valve and
distribute It to the whole circumfer
ence of the air stream.
The surface tenalon of the gasoline Is
broken up as It Is forcibly drawn over
the Inner edge of the grooved flange,
and It becomes perfectly mixed with the
air.
Barf ace tension Is the same force that
makes the drop of water stand In a
eeml-aphere. or assume a spherical
shape. This principle Is employed la
the manufacture of shot, which are not
molded, aa many persona suppose, but
dropped through a screen, the surface
tension causing them to assume the
shape of perfect spheres.
Ordinary Mix rare fries.
The law of the surface tension of
liquids la that every liquid Inherently
assumes a shape which exposes the
least exposed area and arranges Ita
surface molecules la such a form aa to
resist disintegration. In short. It forms
a tough protecting skin over the
liquid.
"The throttle valve of almost every
par." explains Dr. Ong. -whether placed
vertical or borlsontal. Is arranged so as
to deflect the gasoline or other fuel
against the wall of the Intake pipe,
which It follows to tbe cylinders as
water follows wood by capillary attrac
tion. Oasollna or other liquid fuel en
tering the cylinder in liquid form will
dot explode. It will fry Into smoke,
polling the Incoming gas. making
much carbon and making tbe engine
fir unevenly and loe power.
"A large portion of the gasoline goes
by the pistons Into tbe crank case,
cats the oil. ruins the bearings, la fact
caaaes moat of the troublea to which
the gas angina la subject.
"Compreeston may seem good when
tried with the crank, because the to
fts, turned over a few times before It
stopped, after the spark was off. and
coated the cylinder walls with the

results not only because there Is com
plete combustion of fuel, but more than
that, because the automlxer thus pro
tects the crank case oil from dilution
by the heavy portion of the so-called
gasoline used today, which otherwise
goes Into the cylinders in liquid form.
This ruins tbe crank case oil by lower
ing Its flash point and causes It to char
on the cylinder walla with every explo
sion, which creates great friction with
loss of compression and power."
The automlxer Is not the first device
perfected by Dr. Ong to Increase auto
mobile efficiency. Some years ago he
developed a device to Improve car
buretors which Is now largely used In
the manufacture of the ordinary carburetor.

The Portland branch of tha Bearings
Service Company was established here
only last September 1. Already Man

The Bearlnga Service Company Is
comparatively a new concern In the
automobile field, but It has filled a
genuine need and Ita growth has been
so rapid that already It has tl branches
In various parts of the country.

While here he called on D. C Warren,
president of the D. C. Warren Motor
Car Company. Oregon distributors for
the Velie, to arrange for a big allot
ment of Velle car for Mr. Irby'a territory,
will be president and general manager.
Associated with him In the new or
ganisation will be Norman Devaux as
vice-president and Clifford M. Steves
aa secretary and sales manager.
Mr. Steves, particularly, is well
known in Portland, for he haa been
here since December, 191. aa manager
of thla territory for the Chevrolet
Motor Company, of California. With
the recent establishment here of a
Portland branch and Chevrolet dis
tributing headquartera for the North
west, he became branch manager also.
Prior to coming to Portland, Mr.
Stevea waa In Los Angeles, where he
handled the Chevrolet line In Southern
California and Arizona. He is one of
the well-known younger men in the
automobile Industry on the Pacific
Coast.
Tha new Scrlpps-Booth will be a six
cylinder car to sell at a price of about
$1200 on the Pacific Coast. Mr. Steves
has wired here that the new company
will distribute the Scripps-Booth from
Oakland, and that he will bring the
car to Portland shortly with a view to
establishing It here.
The Scrlpps-Booth waa represented
In Portland for a brief period about
year ago. It Is understood that the
new car embodies many Improvements
over the former model.

the "radiator man, who after many
years as manager for the firm of
Burnesa & Martin recently severed his
connection with them and has .opened
shop of his own at 63-65 Ninth street

parts about an automobile for which
Mr. Gerber Is equipped to give service.
Though their manufacture and repair
are his specialty, he also operatea a
first-class auto, sheet metal manufac
turing and repair shop. Besidea radia
tors, he manufactures and repairs
fenders, gas tanks, mufflers, dust
skirts, hoods, windshields, bent bodies
and sheet metal parts of various kinds
for automobiles.

Riggs Being Western Head.
. Willys-Overland, Inc., of Toledo,
through Edwin B. Jackson, vice-president
In charge of sales, has just an
nounced a new plan of organization of
the company's sales department, made
to bring the facilities of the factory
Into closer touch with the. company's
dealer organization. This new plan of
organization is expected to result In
material benefit to Willys-Overland
dealers.
Under thia system tha company's
sales policies will be carried out on the
division basis, for which purpose the
country is divided into seven divisions.
In each division will be stationed a
resident division manager with power
to make decisiona for the company
with distributors.
Tha adoption of this plaji brings two
new executives Into the Willys-Overland
organization.
J. I. Handley, who win be manager of
the East Central Division, with head
quarters at Toledo, comes to Willys-
Overland, Inc., from tlje Mutual Motors
Company, of Jackson, Mich, of which
he haa been president since 1916. Mr.
Handley has been in the automobile
business for tbe past 10 years, having
organized tha Maxwell-Brlscoe-Hand
ley Company to distribute Maxwell
Briscoe cars from Dallas, Texas, In
HOT.
- In 1908 ha took charge of tha flnan
cial and sales work of the parent com
pany in the Chicago district. He went
to New Tork City in 1910 to accept the
vice-presidency of the U. S. Motors
Company, and in 1913 was made presi
dent of tha Marion Motor Company, In
dlanapolls. In his new connection Mr.
Handley will have associated with
him W. O. Northrup, East Central Dis
trlct sales manager.
l. C. Barber, the other new acquisi
tion to the Willys-Overland sales
force, who will be manager of the West
Central Division, with headquarters at

Mr. Barber-entered the employ of the
Molina Plow Company as a salesman
at the Kansas City branch. He was in
succession manager of that company's
branches at St. Louis and Minneapolis.
Later he returned to Kansas City as

following which he was made general
sales manager, with headquarters at
Mol' e. R. L. Butler will be assoclat
ed with Mr. Barber aa district sales
manager.
William L. Colt will be manager of
the Eastern Division, with headquar
ters In New York City. Mr. Colt was
until recently manager of the New
York City branch of Willys-Overland.
Inc. He waa the organizer of the Colt
Stratton Company, New York City,
Eastern distributors lor Cole and
D-dge cars. F. R. French Is associated
with Mr. Colt aa district sales man
ager.
George H. cox, until recently as
sistant director of branches, will be
manager of the Mid-Western Division.
Mr. Cox Joined the Willys-Overland
forces two years ago following eight
years with the Thomas B. Jeffrey
Company, of Kenosha, Wis. He will
make his headquarters at Kansaa City,
Mo.
The other division managers will be
Frank C. Riggs, Western Division, with
headquarters at San Francisco; E. N.
Culver, Southern Division, headquarters
at Atlanta, Ga, and C M. LeRoui,
orthwestern Division, headquarters at
Minneapolis.
George M. Berry, formerly director of
branches, and K. R. Jacoby, formerly
assistant sales manager, will be associ
ated with Vice-President Jackson as
assistant commercial managers. The
