When the Oregon prohibition law is placed in effect, what is to become of the prominent corners and Inside busi ness locations that are now occupied by saloons? Already some of tho vacated saloon premise are belne remodeled for new lines of business and plans are on foot fr numerous other alterations, some of which will tie extensive. Whilo It is undoubtedly true that many- building- operations are being held up until the eiiect oi proamnion is seen, architects and builders find considerable basis for hope in the fact that most of tlve- present saloon loca tlon. will have to be repaired and re arranged before they will be suitable to house other line of business. Vnder--wood, of Alabama, "that the wise man does not live in the past, for the past cannot be mended; that he does not live in the future, because the fu ture is uncnartod land, but that he lives in the present and makes most ot the day and the hour he has with him. "This is probably the best way for men to get the best results from each day they live, both so far as their pro ductive capacity -and their happiness is concerned, but we cannot forget the future entirely. "Every day we march on to old age and incapacity. Every day we face the dangers and accidents of life. Every day we approach nearer the hour when our mentality will lose the keenness of its edge and our physical forces will begin to fail. The wise man, therefore, who lives in the hour that is with him will have some tliought of the future and store up a suiplus lor the days to come. "Theres are many ways in which a man can conserve his surplus energies for future use. The product of his toil may be buried, in the ground by the miser, invested in land by the farmer or in stocks and bonds by the business man, but to make a good in vestment requires accurate informa tion and good business Judgment. These qualities are not possesssed by all. While Senator Underwood's state ment doubtless convoys tho meaning that life insurance is one of the many forms of storing up for old age. it was probably not intentionaj that he sep arated it from all other Crorms of thrift. Life insurance is an auxiliary force necessary to every line of human en deavor. It is a. preventive of failure, jus-t as inoculatio.i with a. certain se rum prevents typhoid fever. A score of farm mortgagees are fore closed evety day in this country, due to the fact that heirs are unable to meet the necessary payments. Suffi cient life insurance, enough to cover the amount of the mortgages, would have saved these properties. Worthless estates are probated every day. Families accustomed to plenty are thrown out into the world petiniles.i, because they are unable to meet tho liabilities :igainst their inheritance. And in some cases the margin is in finitely sre.all. If the business men of this country who are in debt today knew that it re quired only a small annual deposit of 1, 2, 3 or 4 per cent of their total in debtedness to wipe, out this amount as a liability, :here would be more of them adopting t'ais plan and there would bo less economic personal and National waste.
