Building operations for October make
decidedly the best showing for the year
to date. Oflicial reports received by
the American Contractor, Chicago, from
7;i cities show building permits issued
tor the month to amount to I62.93S.777.
as compared with $44,227,293 for Octo
ber last year, an increase of 42 per
cent.
There was a gain of .12 per cent in
September and one of 11 per cent in
August, the tomparalive reports for
months earlier in the year all showing
losses as compared with 191 1.
The increase last month was so large
that it seems to mark a full return
to the normal amount of construction
work. Tho improvement is general
throughout the country, 52 of the 73
cities showing gains.
Among the cities making the more
rotable increases are the following, to
gether with the percentage of their

tain Timber Company vs. the General
Insurance Company for the destruction
of the plaintiff's mill at Kalama July,
1914, passed several days ago and the
plaintiff has not completed introduction
of its testimony. No end of the case
is yet in sight and a recess of the court
probably will be taken soon to allow
judge Parch to give his attention to
other matters.
