Carrying cargo for Boston. Philadel phia and New York, the steamer triclt sails from San Francisco Satur day in the Dodge service, following the steamer St. Helens, which inaugurated the service, and a third vessel la to be sent ovor the same route, says Kred U. Parr, manager of the line, who reached the city yesterday. Mr. Parr says the Cricket does not supplant the St. Helens, as has been reported, but is an additional carrier, and results obtained through their op eration, also that of a third steamer to be put on. will determine whether the line will be maintained perma nently. The plan is to have the vessels carry general cargo, as well as deck loads of lumber, though at times their principal loads may be lumber! At present the heavy movement of canned goods, in the way of salmon from the north jxnd fruit from California, makes it desirable to carry such shipments in the hold. The American - Hawaiian steamer Georgian came in last night from New y orK. having 6d0 tons of freight for .Portland. S!ie loads for the return to - the Atlantic side. Balling via Puget . Sound and San Francisco, and calls at -Boston on her way to New York. The ", present schedule of the line, which Is temporary, provides for the Xebraakan to call at Boston, as well as New York, when she leaves here October 25. and the Honolulan. sailing from Portland November 9 and the Iowan November " IS, follow -the same course. The Da kotan sails November 22 for Philadel phia and New York. With the steamers of tha Boston Pacific line to make Boston the Atlan tic terminus and the American. Hawaiian giving & direct service there -also. Portland firms will be placed in a position to enlarge the field for stuff ; moving into that gone. In another year U is believed that the trade from the Pacific Coast will have been developed so that the principal cities on the east coast will become regular ports of call. CAXAL GETS GKAIX CARGO Short Cut Enables Tramp Steamers . to Increase Xnniber of Voyages. Leaving Astoria September 20 with a full cargo of grain, the British f. c.raer aaxon Monarch passed ne Manama canal Friday, bound for St Vincent for orders. While the run in no way is to be compared with the speed of the coast-to-coast liners shippers are pleased that the Canal Is available for this season be cause so much grain has been disposed of for early delivery. On the other hand, owners of vessels will be enabled to Increase their rev-- enue. providing the demand for ton nage continues, as the average' tramp steamer can make two voyages in the time formerly required to cover the distance from the Columbia River and .. Puget Sound to the United Kingdom by way of the Straits of Magellan. For vessels dispatched via the Canal less is being paid than was the case two weeks ago, and the easier -feeling is re- . ported having an effect on the en gagement of sailing tonnage, as the French bark Brizeaux, the charter of which was cancelled more than a week ago by G. W. McNear, has been taken at 29 shillings for barley, a decline of 1 shilling us compared with the former rate. The charter of the American shin i.dward Sewell to load wheat on Puget Sound was done at Sis 3d. or 33 shil lings, with the option of wheat and barley. ORIENTAL TRADE IS SLACK fcomc Business Being Done in Parcel Shipments From Here. Oriental trading is far from brisk, yet parcel flour shipments are being Arranged for to move on liners of the Royal Mail early in November, and there are prospects that Japanese ton nage will move foodstuffs, as the Japanese steamer Congosan Maru sailed from Otaru October 2 for San Francisco with coal and general cargo and Is to load for the return with wheat and flour, which she will work either here or on Puget Sound. The Royal Mall has the liners Ben of Alrlle and Merionethshire on the way across the Pacific, the former from Yokohama and the latter from Hong kong. A both will reach British Co lumbia waters about the same time, it is not improbable one will sail direct from Portland for Yokohama and the other return from here by way of Puget Sound and Victoria. As the Eu ropean war has diminished exports the . withdrawal of the Hamburg-American . fleet during the war has not imposed any burden on shippers, 1RH)GE FLEET GETS READY Clatsop, AVahkiakum and Malliloma Start In Pew Days. Repairs in the engine-room of the Government dredge Clatsop are to be . completed this week so she can go Into active commission again Thursdav By ' that time the suction dredge Wah kiakum should be ready to tow from tho Government moorings and the combined dredge and snusboat Math loma will be sept to the Upper Willam ette to operate s long as the stage of - water permits. The dredge Colonel P. S. Michie went Into commission on Coos Bay Wednes day, but on proceeding to the bar con . Tiitions were deemed too rough to start work. By the end of the week all floating plant in the first and second districts will be engaged as. well as .operations being under wav on the . north jetty, and on The Dalles-Celilo Canal. Now that the rivers and har .. bora bill has been disposed of, ship pers interested in the Upper Willamette trade are anxious that the purchase of the locks at Oregon City be closed so that barrier may become free. On the last five voyages of steamers in the Portland-Alaska trade the rev enues were In excess of operating ex penses, says Fred I. Parr, manager-of the line, who is -In the city from San - . ..v v. iu o-neiiu a meetinsr at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the' Chamber of Commerce, when the future of the Alaskan service Is to be dis cussed. "This is not simply a stockholders' meeting, but a public session, and we hope every shipper having any connec tions in Alaska will bo on hand." said Mr. Parr. "It Is an opportunity for an interchange of views on a proposition that means so much for Portland. The Alaska steamship venture should not be looked upon solely from the standpoint as to whether it will prove a money maker in two years, but rather from the angle as to what benefit will be derived commercially. If Portland can Increase her trading z ne through maintains such a line, the project Is warranted, even though the direct re suit may not chow profits." TWO GRAIN SHIPS ' ARRIVE Arnold us Vinnen and Semantha Picked XTp Toy Bar Tugs. ' Hardly had the German ship Arnoldus Vinnen been picked up off the Columbia River by the tug Wallula at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, concluding a voy age from Port Natal that she began June 19, than the tug Oneonta was reported having the Norwegian bank Semantha in tow. The latter halls from Callao and had been on the wax since August 21. Both are In ballast and the former is consigned to Strauss & Co. and the Semantha to the Port land Flouring Mills Company. As the Arnoldus Vinnen began her voyage sometime before the European disturbance began and the policy of German ship owners since has been to hold all vessels in port, it is, sup posed that her charter will be can celled. That was done in the case of the Kurt and Dalbek. both of which are idle in the river, and nine German carriers that were en route tere have been stricken from the list -of gain tonnage. I 1 I -V I I - x-nv I I ?7 &nc Zr-afe aZ Yard Development Is Com ' pleled at Flavel. TRACK LAYING IS FINISHED Supplies and Equipment for North Bank Docks Will Be Hushed. Through Trains Will Oper ate From Portland. Rapid progress is being made on the North Bank Railroad's new rail and steamship terminals at Flavel, neur the mouth of the Columbia River. The construction department of the road, wider direction of William Gerig, engineer, has Just completed the yard development and turned the property over to tho operating department. These tracks now will be used in con nection with the regular main line of the road. Supplies and equipment for the terminals are being handled over them. The yard at Flavel embraces a set of four parallel tracks, which will be used for both freight and passenger traffic. It connects with the main line between Astoria and Seaside at W'ar renton. It is the intention, upon inaugura tion of service, to run through pas senger service Detween Portland and Flavel, with few stops at Intermediate points. The trains will run close to the docks, so that passengers can walk from the trains to the ships, or from the ships to the train with a minimum of inconvenience. A succession of over head coverings will be built so that passengers at no time will be forced to walk exposed to the elements. Provision has been made for keep ing the several classes of passengers separate, both on the trains and , on the steamers. Separate entrances and gates will be provided at the steamer exits and entrances for first-class, second-class and third-class passengers.
