THE SUNDAY OREGOMAX, PORTLAND, JULY 13, 1913. Sunday the entire party called in a body on the Mayor in Seaside. Included in this Jolly party were Mayor Gilbert, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Wiles, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Mennifee. Mr. and Mrs. George, of Deep River. Wash.; Dr. E. D. Johnson and George Achley, of Port land. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Brobest have taken one of the cottages on East Main street. Mr.' and Mrs. A. P. Morse are among the season's cottagers. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Monroe are also a recent addition to the season's cot tagers. Captain Patterson, of Astoria, with his family are established in a cottage for the Summer. It is the annual season of fun and frolic In the open, the period of temporary suspension from toll and strife, and the time for seeking recrea tion and the return of health and strength. ; Nowhere in all the world is there more or better opportunity for the full enjoy ment of the annual vacation period than right here in Oregon. With its miles and miles of ocean beaches, its inland lakes and streams, its mountains, forests,, valleys and picturesque vil lages, this state offers every attrac tion for which the seeker after outdoor Ufa can ask. - While Portland people and the resi dents of other parts of the state long have recognized the natural advantages of Oregon and utilized their powers of granting new life and vigor, it Is only in comparatively recent years that vis itors from without the state have be gun to realize the superior charm of Oregon's vacation resorts. Oregon now is. becoming the tour ists' Mecca. Thousands of people come here every year from the Middle West and the East. They pass days, weeks and sometimes months within the state. Some of them, after being here awhile, go home only to return and become per manent residents. . Oregon's natural scenic advantages, therefore, are among its chief assets. The state is just beginning to capital ize them. They are paying handsome annual dividends. The year 1913 Is witnessing the pres ence In the state of a host of travelers pleasure seeking tourists. They come Into Portland by the tralnload al most every day. From here they scat ter to distant parts of the state. With the passing years Oregon Is becoming more widely known as a tourist resort. BKAtt AXD SEAU ATTRACT Seaside Sojourners Amqsed by Antics of Two Unusual Pets. SEASIDE. Or., July 12. (Special.) One of the most amusing as well as interesting sights In Seaside is a tame seal sunning himself on the lawn, while a tiny kitten plays around Its nose. Many passers-by attracted by this strange sight stop and caress the seal, who actually appears to like it. Seaside also furnishes much merri ment with a trained bear, a small one, whose chief playmate Is a dog prac tically the same size as the little brown bear. They are owned by the .! t same man and crowds gather on Main street whenever the bear appears. The pavilion attached to Hotel Moore will bo completed this week and "hops" will be given by the hotel management every Saturday evening. Dr. and Mrs. Harry McKay are now occupying the "Four Winds" cottage for the season and have as their guest Mrs. Windfelder. Mrs. J. F. Griswold arrived Sunday and opened the Griswold cottage for a few weeks. Her guests are Mrs. James N. Davis and daughter. Miss Catherine Davis, Mrs. Whittlesey and daughter Miss Mildred Whittlesey. Forst rum's, all of whom were on the admi ral's staff In the Astoria resatta. Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Wiles were hosts at luncheon at Hotel Moore in their honor Saturday, and the party was royally entertained during its stay. (Special.) Golf, riding on the beach, motor trips to Elk Creek and surrounding country, swimming parties and bonfires aided by perfect weather conditions of the past week furnished plenty of delightful di version for the large number of visitors to the beach here. Automobiles are almost as much In demand at the coast resorts as in town, anl each day a continuous stream of machines glides smoothly over the pic turesque roads, close to the sea, and picnic lunches are the order of the day. The new golf Instructor Is now sta tioned at Gearhart and the splendid condition of the links makes the call of "Fore" most insistent. Arrangements for several tourna ments are now under way and the golf enthusiasts are counting on lowering the previous record for the course. Cummings, a prominent attor ney of Seattle,- and -Mrs. Cummings motored down from the Sound City to Hotel Gearhart In their new roadster. During their stay in Gearhart they were entertained at several informal affairs by Mrs. D. V. Halverstadt. who is occupying a cottage here. Mrs. Hal verstadt Is a sister of Mr. Cummings. R. H. Crozier, assistant general pas senger agent of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad passed the week-end at Hotel Gearhart. Mr. and Mrs. A. S.
