With the close of the year, the people of Baker County are taking stock of the achievements made, in mining- de velopment that has been in progress the past IX months. The Cracker Creek district has been making: a good showing. In the group of well-known properties in that dis trict are the Climax, Columbia. E. & E.. North Pole and Golconda. The Climax has. been developed to a stage where it is believed It will be a big producer. The other properties are much older, and each has produced much bullion In years past. The snow In the district has not reached over a depth of two feet, and so far operations have n6t been Im peded by bad weather. The largest snowfall in Baker so -far this Winter has been but two Inches. the people have depended on it for their Winter's fuel. Now it is gone, the last cord having been sold about a week ago, and outside of the few families who laid in a Winter's supply in the Fall, the town Is in a bad predicament. There In some talk of shipping wood from Austin to Prairie City and hauling It by teams, a distance of 16 miles, to Canyon City and John Day. This, how ever, will probably raise the price to $8 or $10 per cord. - It. is not a pleasant outlook for the consumer viewed from any standpoint. Wood Famine at Canyon City. CANTON CITY, Or., Dec. 2. (Special.) With timber growing .almost Into the city limits the town has a wood famine. Wood is now selling at G a cord, and the supply of dry wood is practically ex hausted. About three years ago, & L. Brown, of the C. C. C. Co., had 1200 cords cut about IS miles above town and floated down the creek.
