Is the proud pos sessor of a check, for $12.43 signed by Charles S. Deneen. Governor of Illinois. The clrcum stances In connection with the receiving of the check are novel and cover a period of ten years. SIr Dexter as among the first to answer his coun try's call for volunteers for the Spanish American War, joining troop H of the cavalry. The troop was stationed In prlngtleld. 111., for about three weeks Ik1 fore going to the Phllliplnes and during that time was without pay. Nothing was thought about it durlpg the excitement of going to the front and it was only by chance that Mr. Dexter heard of a claim that had been settled by the Government recently, appropriating a sum of over J2H.00O for the pay due the volunteers during their three weeks' encampment at Fpringfleld prior to leaving for the Philip pines. He immediately wrote to the Adjutant-General of Illinois putting in his claim and the check for S12.4S from Governor Deneen was received in . a short time. New Circus la Organized. Circle No. 17. of the Home Training Association, was organized in the South Mount Tabor school Friday afternoon. Mrs. R. H. Tate, of the Mount Tabor Circle; Mrs. J. C. La Barre. of the Portland Home , Training Association, and Mrs. A. L ; Farkhurst. of Mount Tabor, were present : to address the meeting and assist in starting the new circle. The following officers were elected: President. Mrs. "William Hayhurst; vice-president. Mrs. ("harles A. Nagelstach; secretary. Mrs. Krank Gates; trerrVurer, Mrs. William Blohm; members-at-large, Mrs. P. F. . Milera and Mrs. C. F. Rand. The largest deal in live pigeons ever made in the Norther west was closed yesterday when the Krebs-Reynolds Poultry Company, of Urooks, bought the entire stock of the Mount Poott Pigeon Lofts from Dr. A. Reed. The pigeons will be transferred to the Brooks farm in a few days. There are 13)0 birds In the lot and the price paid for them was JJiiiO. Some of them were rrixe winners and are valued at 1." each. The Krebs-Reynolds Company will make a specialty of raising squabs for the Portland market. Plans Made for T. P. A. Banquet. Arrangements are being made for the annual meeting and banquet of the Ore gon and Washington division of the Traveler's Protective Association to be held in the Portland Commercial Club, December 26. It is expected that 250 mem bers of the association will attend the business session and banquet. The or ganization is composed of commercial travelers throughout the country. D... of the First Pres byterian Church of Tacoma. has been secured by the First Church of this city, to take the place at today's ser vices of Dr. William Hiram Foulkes. who on account of ill health has been com pelled to take a few weeks" rest in Southern California. Dr. McLeod was formerly pastor of the leading Presby terian Church of Des Moines. Iowa. In this pastorate he became acquainted with Dr. Foulkes, who was then pastor of the First Church of Clinton. Iowa. Missions in Alaska Is Subject. At a meeting of St. David's branch of the Woman's Auxiliary, held on Thursday afternoon, at the home of Mrs. Frank Swanton. Dr. Cloor, . who was for sev eral years In charge of the missions at Seward Peninsula. Alaska; gave a review of his work in that region. Bishop SV-adding was present and de livered a short address. Dr. Van Waters also spoke briefly. A short musical pro gramme was rendered, after which re freshments were served. The president. Mrs. a W. Berry, presided. Music Festival Organ. President Frederick W. Goodrich, of the Portland Festival Chorus, reported last night that arrangements had ben practically con cluded with Ellers Piano House by which the latter had kindly agreed to furnish free of all charge to the chorus a pipe organ to be erected on the stage for use at the music festival, next March. The organ will bo "heard principally in Sul livan's "Golden Legend" and Rossini's "Stabat Mater." Club Arranges Smoker. The Catholic Toung Men's Club will give a smoker and entertainment at their new club house. Williams avenue and Morris street, tomorrow night, December 14. All mem bers of the club are invited to attend and bring their friends. The committee in charge of the programme has ar ranged for boxing and wrestling matches, musical numbers and acrobatic features. Resolutions op Regret Passed. At a meeting of Phalanx Lodc No. 14, Knlgl'ts of Pythias, a resolution was passed expressing the regret of that body at the death of the late Ralph B.
