-rTHfe SUNDAY OREjfrOiNI&rNr PORftLANP, JANUARY 28, "1900V fV - W ISff --W 'i ' """ " That a young man or woman thoroughly qualified to render ' superior. service is sure of a good position within reasonable time. The success Of our "graduates proves this.- Hundreds of them are pleasantly and profitably employed, both as bookkeepers and sten ographers. A business education first, a literary education after wards, is bread-and-butter philosophy. We have educated hundreds of young men and women for successful careers, and can do better work now -than ever before because' of better facilities. Students may enter at any time. Our catalogue explains our methods v of instruction fully Call or send for a copy. Portland Business College A. P. ARMSTRONG, Prin. Fifth and SYMPATHY FOR BOERS. v United States Should Speak Its Sen timents, Without Intermeddling:. EUGENE, Or., Jan. 26. (To the Editor.) . A communication from Ballston, Or., In yesterday's Oregonlan, opposes antag onizing "the power -whose Interests run parallel with our own." Nobody In the United States Is In favor of antagonizing . Great Britain in the Boer way, or any other matter, in the sense of intermed dling. We have never considered it proper to interfere in the disputes or entangle ments -of foreign powers outside of this hemisphere; but 99 persons in every 100 in thla country sympathize and are in favor of the nation's expressing its sympathy with the Boers in their just and 'heroic struggle in defending their territory and their liberty against an International high wayman. This "does not mean that we should go to war, but that we should maintain our historic regard for the rights Of humanity, instead of making mawkish slobbery over a pirate, for fear of-losing our gold or his favor in supposed national advantages. No nation, however, siding in with injustice, ever Teaps any permanent gain from it, even in a material way. The Boens, a Christian nation, are only fighting for their dearest rights, their homes' and firesides, against a clique of mining, speculators, temporarily, through deceit and treachery, at the head of a great empire, and -the indications are the Boers may win by foreign aid, if not by 'their own strength. -The civilized world is almost unanimously opposed to this dastardly war against them. "The British claim that the TJItlanderK should' be given the right to vote in the Transvaal without renouncing their alle giance to England is utterly without rea son. No nation should be compelled to do such a thing. Our own nation does not and never will. The reason the foreigners there pay most of the taxes is that they. own most -of the wealth of the country. Their -wealth is derived from the mines of the country, and a great deal of It is sent out. It is the universal rule that foreigners pay taxes in proportion to their wealth, as other people. They are taxed hut Z& per cent on the product of their mines, "while Great Britain taxes American miners 10 per cent in the Klondike. Under the -convention of 1S84, the last between the Boers and Great Britain, suzerainty Tvas iven up, England retain ing only the control of Boer treaties with foreign powers, and the Boers have vio lated no conditions of that agreement I would have no objection to expansion by England or any other nation in a just and natural manner, and favor the permanent retention of the Philippines by the United States, but such "expansion" as England is now attempting in the Transvaal by robbery will result in her ruin. England, in the past, has been a great civilizing power, and her destrucUon would be a great calamity to the world. For that reason it is not only to her Interest, but to ours, that she keep out of such mis erable messes as she is making in the Transvaal. But, if she cannot draw out be-fore .going any farther on the "down ward road," she had better be beaten and get a good lesson, at whatever cost, and Tetaln her -usefulness, Instead of going on and taking the final plunge. She has only herself to blame, and her success now would be tenfold -worse for her than de feat Our protest together with other nations against this damnable war would help to bring Great Britain to her senses and stop hostilities on some just basis, and save her as well as ourselves from many future evils. As a republican, I am disgusted at the sending of a" son of a high government of cial to look after British interests as our consul In the Transvaal. 3 the belief should become general that the republican administration is "backing up" Great Brit ain, it will lose; enough votes in the fall election to turn the country to Bryan, whom the nation naturally distrusts on other questions. Moral principles, after all, have the greatest influence on the masses of the people. The expansion of the United States -in the East and West Indies was justified by the highest principles of right and duty. Not -so the "expansion" of the "British in The Transvaal. It is nothing but highway fotibery. In a former comment by the writer referred to, I was called a jackass. I would rather be an honest jackass than a .British land pirate or sympathizer with British land piracy. The jackass -is as much better than such an animal as the heavens are higher than the earth. VOX POPULI. r The "Willamette. (On the bridge at night o'er the Willamette.) Rapid It flows; and the moonlight gleams, Shedding its .rays in silvery streams; And it beckons me now, with 'its waves and "beams. Below, below, and it ever seems To whisper of rest to murmUr of peace; And It beckons me on to release release! Is it cold. I wonder? It looks not so, There in the glimmering depths below. Who'd care or fret if I'd Jump and go? And, better still. nO one would know. And 3 et ome .fisherman throwing his net. Might bring up my body, bedraggled and wet And the morgue be the bed for my rigid form; And the news boys, ring the new alarm Of a tjody found! You mean me harm With your beckoning waves, and your subtle charm. You would not keep me in your deep; "You would not let me rest and sleep! On, on, yougo with your shimmering waves. Alas! how many have, sought their graves In your depths, and your water laves The bodies of those- that no one saves. For no one (hears the last mad prajer " Of those who seek you In despair! You are beautiful, yes, and you beckon me still; You tempt and endeavor to weaken the will. Your voice may be soft but I fear you would chill My bones to their marrow. Alas, you but fill My oul with alarm! If my body was hurled "Onto you, would I find you less cold than the world? f ELLA CORTH.LO BENNETT. 0 .He Saved Sliermnn From Capture. Galesburg, HI. William Wallace Patch djd here January 21, of pneumonia. He was born near Ludlow, Vt, October 14, 1823. During the civil war he was a rail road conductor, running trains In the South, and at one time saved General Sherman and his staff from capture, an act which 5eneral Sherman never forgot Patcfi was in charge of a train running from Memphis General Sherman and staff were on board, en route to a point J. AWESCO, Secretary near Corinth. The engineer was to stop the train in a densely wooded section, ap parently to take -water. The engineer performed his part, bringing the train to a halt Immediately volleys were fired at the train. Patch, regardless of bullets, jumped from the train, ran to the engine, mounted It, revolver in hand, and forced the engineer to proceed. The tsain drew away before the rebels could Teach it Tears afterward, General Sherman was addressing a crowd in Galesburg; He no ticed' Patch in the crowd and called hfm I to the stand, as the man who had saved him from capture. During the war Patch received injuries which he carried through life. He had been a Mason for 50 years. no Touching the Health.
