Park Ave. Festival of Cultural Traditions Five folk artists will perform or demonstrate a variety of cul- tural traditions, from traditional Kenyan cooking techniques to Estonian folk dance at the PDX Culture Keepers Festival, Satur- day, June 11 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oregon Historical Society, downtown. Rounding out the free, fami- ly-friendly program will be inter- active demonstrations of Oaxacan weaving, Coquille/Coos canoe paddle carving, and intricately woven nautical rope mats. The featured artists include Francisco Bautista, a fourth-gen- eration weaver from a village near Oaxaca City, Mexico, known for its weaving tradition, and Dennis Best, a maker of traditional nau- tical rope mats who will demon- strate his knotting techniques and invites guests to tie a few them- selves. Wambui Machua, a Kenyan Participants learn the basics of composting at a Composting 101 workshop at the Columbia Springs urban natural area in Vancouver. The instruction will give you an introduction to the science of composting and a close up demonstration of composting bins and systems in action.
