day, June 11 at the Oregon Historical Society, 1200 S.W. Park Ave.
Festival of Cultural Traditions
Five folk artists will perform
or demonstrate a variety of cul-
tural traditions, from traditional
Kenyan cooking techniques to
Estonian folk dance at the PDX
Culture Keepers Festival, Satur-
day, June 11 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Oregon Historical Society,
downtown.
Rounding out the free, fami-
ly-friendly program will be inter-
active demonstrations of Oaxacan
weaving, Coquille/Coos canoe
paddle carving, and intricately
woven nautical rope mats.
The featured artists include
Francisco Bautista, a fourth-gen-
eration weaver from a village near
Oaxaca City, Mexico, known for
its weaving tradition, and Dennis
Best, a maker of traditional nau-
tical rope mats who will demon-
strate his knotting techniques and
invites guests to tie a few them-
selves.

workshop at the Columbia Springs urban natural area in Vancouver.

your kitchen waste? A two hour
class at the Columbia Springs ur-
ban natural area in Vancouver can
help you turn your green matter
into black gold and save money
on your garbage bill.
The instruction will give you
an introduction to the science
of composting and a close up
demonstration of composting
bins and systems in action. The
next class is Wednesday, June 14
at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Springs
Swift Classroom, 12208 S.E.
Evergreen Hwy. Cost is $5 and
pre-registration is required. Visit
