Multiple Sclerosis Blessing in Disguise for Richard Pryor (AP) - Instead of packed arenas, comedian Richard Pryor now tours medical clinics. Instead of applause, he gets eight checkups a month in what his wife jokingly calls “the round robin of doctors.” Still, Jennifer Lee Pryor says her hu sband’s crippling multiple s c le r o s is is a b le s s in g th a t stripped away his taste for the drugs &nd alcohol she was con vinced would have left him dead. Today, h e’s ju st m onths shy o f his 65th birthday. Nearly two decades with the dis ease has left Pryor in a wheelchair and out of the public eye, long after his expletive-laced standup act spawned dozens of movies and made the Peoria native box office magic through much of the late 1970s and e a rly '80s. Now, Pryor - who has also suf fered three heart attacks - spends most of his time at his home near Encino, Calif., with two rescued dogs and Jennifer, his fifth wife. H e’s had many nicknam es, in cluding “Soul Brother Number O ne,” "the G odfather o f Soul,” “the Hardest W orking Man in Show B usiness," and “ Mr. Dyna m ite.” No one can question that Jam es Brown has earned these monikers more than any other per former. Brown will funk it up to an ex cited crowd on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6:30p.m. at the Les Schwab Amphi theater in Bend. Few other m usicians have been so influential on the course o f popular music than Brown, and no other m usician puts on a more exciting, exhilarating stage show. T hrough the g o sp e l-im p a s sioned fury of his vocals and the complex polyrhythms of his beats. Brown was a crucial midwife in two revolutions in American black mu sic. He was one o f the figures most responsible for turning R&B into soul and he was the figure most responsible for turning soul music into the funk of the late '60s and early ’70s.
