’ "'Jlortlanh (Dbsmier MED Week Page B6 October 08. 2003 Health Care Professionals Wanted VA recruits minorities for biomedical and clinical research In a move to bring more people o f color into the sciences, a field typically under-representing mi norities, the Dept. o f Veterans Affairs is creating more career opportunities in biomedical and clini cal research. “ By opening up more opportunities in VA re search to minority health care professionals, we’re ensuring that veterans will continue to be served by the best this country has to offer,” said Deputy Secretary o f Veterans Affairs Dr. Leo S. Mackay Jr. Three new mentoring programs will enhance research opportunities for minorities and increase business for minority-serving institutions. The programs aim to support institutional col laborations between VA and minority- serving institutions by partnering students with VA men tors. The program willaiso provide applied training in research on V A-funded projects to high school and college students. Ultimately, the VA would pay a full salary to participants in the programs mentored by VA researchers, who have completed clinical fellow ships or doctoral training. Terhune assists Charla Hayden, director of the office of professional and diversity develop ment, in leading the school’s development of an integrated and diverse community of learning among all nursing school members. The primary focus is the recruitment, devel opment and retention of an effective and diverse nursing community.
