Health Care Professionals Wanted
VA recruits minorities
for biomedical and
clinical research
In a move to bring more people o f color into the
sciences, a field typically under-representing mi
norities, the Dept. o f Veterans Affairs is creating
more career opportunities in biomedical and clini
cal research.
“ By opening up more opportunities in VA re
search to minority health care professionals, we’re
ensuring that veterans will continue to be served
by the best this country has to offer,” said Deputy
Secretary o f Veterans Affairs Dr. Leo S. Mackay Jr.
Three new mentoring programs will enhance
research opportunities for minorities and increase
business for minority-serving institutions.
The programs aim to support institutional col
laborations between VA and minority- serving
institutions by partnering students with VA men
tors.
The program willaiso provide applied training
in research on V A-funded projects to high school
and college students.
Ultimately, the VA would pay a full salary to
participants in the programs mentored by VA
researchers, who have completed clinical fellow
ships or doctoral training.

Today, we stand at the threshold of a great new era
in nursing advancement. Rapid changes in health
care technology, knowledge and delivery require
new skills and learning. Nurses are taking on
greater responsibility in hospitals and are finding
new opportunities in non-traditional settings. The
opportunity to put knowledge into action — for
patients, families and communities — has never
been greater.
