McDonald’s Gives Up on Site D ecision ends drive-thru controversy on M artin L uther King M cD onald's will not be building a new’ drive-thru restaurant on North east M artin L uther King Jr. B oule vard and will instead divert money for restorations o f existing Portland locations. . Although the Planning Bureau ap proved the proposed design plans fo ra M cD onald's on the 3300 block o f King last sum m er, the decision caused a year and a h a lf long contro versy for local neighbors. Hl Many Boise neighborhood residents feared the drive-thru would compro mise public safety by diverting traffic through quiet residential streets. Other residents said the restaurant proposal did not meet the criteria stated in the Albina Community Plan, which called for more pedestrian traffic and less auto- oriented business in the area. But som e long-tim e neighbors ea gerly supported M cD onald’s inter est in the area, because the new site w ould result in new jobs. M cDonald’s sales have been in a state ofdecline. The company reported its first quarterly loss, $343.8 million, for the fourth quarter o f2002. This year thecompany will open 360 new stores, as opposed to the 1,000 opened last year.
