August 15 - 18, 2002 Today’s caravan will travel to various cities and designated sites of significance, holding forums on reparations to descendants of enslaved Africans, and offering vital historical information to the public. * Artists and performers will be featured in an entertainment pro gram consisting of vendors, Afri can dance, drumming, spoken word, hip-hop music, theatrical performances, short essays, gos pel, and rhythm and blues vocals. Local politicians will also address the gatherings. Musicians, performers, and entertainers traveled the old Chitlin’ Circuit during the Jim Crow era. The talented descen dants of enslaved Africans played to a network of small and large nightclubs scattered in black neighborhoods throughout the nation. It was a safe haven for such travelers in general, includ ing some of the most highly ac claimed recording artists of the time. Denied public accommoda tions as well as human dignity, the oldChitlin’ Circuit riders relied on local residents, churches and be nevolent organizations for food, housing, advice and direction.
