The first-a powerful, majestic contralto spanning four octaves - catapulted her from Philadelphia poverty to international fame. A second, softer voice emanated from her mere presence: an unwavering refrain of oppor tunity and accomplishment in the face of racial prejudice. Anderson first garnered major acclaim while studying in London and Berlin. Her break through in America commenced when impresa rio Sol Hurok took her under his wing, and her broad repertoire included Bach and Handel, spirituals, and German lieder. In 1955, she be came the first African-American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. From meetings with Anderson before her death in 1993, Allan Keiler has assembled a magnificent study o f Anderson's life in “Marian Anderson, A Singer's Journey.” TTlarian Anderson A Singer’s Saturday April 27, 2002 21 and over only Master Jam 12am to 12:30am AH 3 bands on stage Paul deLay Band Journey Patrick Lamb Band, featuring Debra Crowe ALLAN KEILER Tickets on sale, Monday, February 25th $12 in advance ~ $15 at the door 8 0 0 -9 9 2 -T IX X (8499) or 8 8 8 -M A IN A C T I 1 (
