S om eone thought that the “O ” on S kinner Butte in Eugene needed a little m akeover and spray-painted the usually yellow letter bright orange. B ut the real w ar is ju st beginning. O regon State stands as the favor ite in a lot o f m inds, largely because o f an easy w in (33-9) at A rizona last Saturday. In term s o f national interest and bow l im plications, it’s a Civil W ar gam e for the ages. T he big gam e could produce a Rose Bow l invite. For the D ucks, it’s sim ple— if they win Saturday, it’s the P A C -1 Ocham pionship and they’re in the Rose Bowl. For the B eavers, it’s a little m ore difficult. T hey need to win and then hope that W ashington State upsets W ashington in the A pple Cup. T hat game will be played in Pullman, Wash. I f both O regon State and W ash ington win, the Huskies will go to the Bowl since they beat the Beavers earlier this year. But the losers o f the Rose Bowl race could still end up in a big tim e bowl gam e — all three are ranked in the top ten in this w eek ’s BCS poll. H ere’s a quick breakdow n o f the run for the Rose Bowl: O regon goes if they beat O regon State; O regon State goes if they beat O regon and W ashington loses to W ashington State; and W ashington goes if they beat W ashington State and O regon State beats O regon.
