But after tw o hours o f w aiting, neither M ahoney’s m onetary offer nor his charm paid off. A fter a night o f w ild party ing downtown, Doris Cowan wasn ’t even up at 9 a.m. w hen she was scheduled to supervise the student union food court. She show ed up about an hour later. “A fter the pep rally tonight, w e ’re going back into the streets to party again! W e’re not going to stop until the ‘Cats d ro p ,” said Cowan, adm itting that such a regim en could m ake for an exhausting offseason. W ith tw o sea so n s o f p ra c tic e in controlling w ild crow ds after national title gam es, L ex ington police w ere ready to handle the m ob o f clo se to 15,000 fans w ho celebrated in the streets. T hree hundred o f ficers lined dow ntow n L exing ton in full riot gear, w atching the chaos with the aid o f spot lights from a National Guard helicopter. Police made 10 arrests and the UK hospital reported treating 25 people for m inor injuries.
