cats w ere to arrive for a pep rally,
10-year-old Justin Puffer got a les­

Tickets for the event com m em o­
rating K entucky’s 78-69 NCAA
tournam ent title gam e victory over
U tah w ere gone w ithin m inutes af­
ter the sales w indow opened Tues-
day m orning. But Justin and his
m other w ere determ ined to find a
generous scalper w illing to m ake a
sale.
T he only problem w as that Mom
had established a price cap.
“ F ifte e n d o lla rs , J u s tin , no
m ore,” Lois Puffer told her son.
A nd that o ffer ju st w a sn ’t g e t­
ting m any bites considering other
W ildcats fans, like Dan M ahoney,
w ere openly offering $50.
“ I figure that if I stand out here
and try to look cute, som ebody will
ju st give them to m e,” M ahoney
joked.
But after tw o hours o f w aiting,
neither M ahoney’s m onetary offer
nor his charm paid off.

accept a coaching jo b with the Bos­
ton C eltics, but reserved his high­
est praise for Smith.

to m e,” M ills said, giving the coach
a hug.

ebration in Rupp Arena.
The players w ent out in the
crow d and signed shirts and new s­
papers, w hile Smith was presented
with a cake that read: “Tubby takes
the cake.”
Not everyone was up at the crack
o f dawn to even try for pep rally
tickets. A fter a night o f w ild party­
ing downtown, Doris Cowan wasn ’t
even up at 9 a.m. w hen she was
scheduled to supervise the student
union food court. She show ed
up about an hour later.
“A fter the pep rally tonight,
w e ’re going back into the streets
to party again! W e’re not going
to stop until the ‘Cats d ro p ,”
said Cowan, adm itting that such
a regim en could m ake for an
exhausting offseason.

after national title gam es, L ex­
ington police w ere ready to
handle the m ob o f clo se to
15,000 fans w ho celebrated in
the streets. T hree hundred o f­
ficers lined dow ntow n L exing­
ton in full riot gear, w atching
the chaos with the aid o f spot­
lights from a National Guard
helicopter.
Police made 10 arrests and the
UK hospital reported treating 25
people for m inor injuries.
Still, police said the chaos
n e v e r re a c h e d the lev el o f
K entucky’s cham pionship night
two years ago when, among other
things, officers were pelted with
beer bottles and a television news
crew ’s van was overturned.
“ I’m glad M arch M adness is
o v e r,” assistant c h ie f Sandra
Devers said early Tuesday as
road-cleaning machines wiped
aw ay beer cans, broken glass and
abandoned shoes that saturated
the area. “I t’s tim e for A pril.”
