From the enchanted castle and life like candelabra, clocks, and china to the costumes and magical special effects that'll have audiences talk ing for months, Disney' s Beauty And The Beast is nearly ready to put Portland under its spell. Disney's Beauty And The Beast, featuring the Academy Award-win ning musical score from the beloved animated film, as well as several new songs, will enchant audiences of all ages in Portland as part of Portland’s 1996-97 Broadway The- ater Season Beauty And The Beast will come to life on stage for a four-and-a-half- week, 38-performance engagement at the Civic Auditorium in Portland beginning with a preview perfor mance on May 15, and an official press opening night on May 16, 1997. The full-length stage musical pro duction of the classic fairy tale opened on Broadway April 18,1994. Beauty And The Beast tells the story of Belle, a young woman in a provin cial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by a beautiful enchant ress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, andhishouseholdwillbedoomed r all eternity. The first venture of Walt Disney leatrical Productions, Beauty And ie Beast features Alan Menkin's cademy Award-winning score, mgs by Alan Menken and the late oward Ashman (including the cadem y A w ard-w inning title mg), an additional song by Ashman id Menken not heard in the film. lus brand new songs by Alan lenken and Tim Rice. The book is ritten by Linda Woolverton, who Iso wrote the screenplay for the limated film.
