T ‘DC{ Tiosts Qospet Concert Expand (To y igUt (Diabetes Gospel s best raised their voices to fight diabetes at "A Celebration o f Gospel,” held recently in Los Ange les. Proceeds from the concert w ill benefit the American Diabetes Asso ciation’s (A D A ) African American Outreach Program and the Black C hurch Diabetes Education Program. Blue Cross o f California was honored at the event for its sponsor ship of the Black Church Diabetes Education Program. The program coordinates efforts with 200 church es throughout Los Angeles, targeting 50,000 members. The goal o f the program is to create an awareness about the problem o f diabetes among African Americans as a community health issue that affects everyone. “ This was a special night for gospel fans,” said Carolyn Hairston, A D A 's outreach coordinator for the A fric a n A m e rican c o m m u n ity. “ Many ofthese performers have been personally touched by diabetes. The money w ill be used to cre ate new space for the center and pay for computers and internet access. The computer hook-up w ill pro vide a “ virtual library” with access to books and periodicals from all over the world and eventually to become a clearinghouse o f written materials and videos to respond to local and regional needs for the study o f re li gion.
